Rumored to be more palatable than the dishes mentioned above is smalahove, found in nearby Norway. Smalahove is a traditional Norwegian dish consumed primarily around the Christmas holidays. This supposedly tasty meal is comprised of a sheep's head with skin and fleece scorched off, the brain removed and the head salted. At this point, the flesh is smoked or dried.

Once in a Norwegian kitchen there are a few methods that can be used to prepare, one example is to boil the head for approximately three hours and then mash with rutabaga and potatoes. Traditionally, however, the head is eaten while intact starting with the ears and eyes.

The trek from Lamayuru to Hemis starts and ends with two of the most famous Buddhist Gompas and takes you through the hilltop villages of Ladakh, like Chilling and Hinju. The trek includes traversing through five passes, crossing the Zansker river, Namaling Plateau and the imposing view of the Kangyatse Peak.

Stok Kangri, located at an altitude of 6,153 m, is really a nerve wrecking climb. But, it is worth the spell binding views of Zanskar and Karakoram ranges. An extreme trekking route is the ice path of the frozen river Zanskar. It involves walking 15 to 20 km on the tough icy terrains in minus 15 to 20 degree Celsius.

The adventure doesn't end up with walking in the extreme temperatures but you will have to take shelter in either the local huts or even caves present en route and feed on whatever is locally available.

It is important to keep in mind some important points before you plunge into the back-breaking activity. Don't overexert yourself by walking fast in the beginning, rather save your energy. Be cautious at narrow passages, wet lands and steep slopes.

Keep taking breaks, and try to keep your feet at a height when you relax. Carry water and a first aid kit handy, along with other important stuff like a torch, gloves and a sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, walking stick etc. arranged neatly in a kit bag. Hike the Sentinel Mont-Aux-Sources Trail

The Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa have held a deep fascination with anyone who has ever visited them. Those dark jagged Basalt peaks are exactly what gave these mountains their name. Drakensberg means dragons mountains in Africans, and if you let your imagination wander just a little, it is quite easy to imagine a great dragon hiding in its lair somewhere amongst the black peaks.

It is therefore small wonder that people have wanted to get to the top of "the berg", as it is often referred too. One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways of doing this is by hiking the Sentinel Mont-Aux-Sources trail. The Sentinel Mont-Aux-Sources trail can be done either as a day trail, or a 2 day backpack hike which takes you right to the top of the Drakensberg. It is well marked and not very difficult.

Anyone wanting to do this trail should however be properly prepared, as the weather in the Drakensberg can change rapidly, with rain and fog being common. Proper raingear and warm clothes are essential to have with. If it has rained, some parts of the trail can get slippery. If you are planning on camping at the top, remember to take a gas stove along as there is no wood available for making fires.

To reach the trail, drive through the Free State town of Phuthadijhaba and onto the Witsieshoek Mountain Resort situated south of Phuthadijhaba. You can either stay at the resort before you do the trail, or go straight to the Sentinel car park. Once you have signed in at the ranger's office you are ready to go!

The trail starts at the Sentinel car park and gently winds its way upwards towards the Sentinel peak. Close to the Sentinel peak is a small detour that takes you to a lookout point with magnificent views of the famous Royal Natal National Park amphitheater. After another 2 to 3 hours hiking, you will reach the famous chain ladders. These are an experience in themselves! There are in fact two separate chain ladders taking you those last 60 meters to the top of the Drakensberg. Take a break when reaching the top of the chain ladders as the views are well worth it.

From here onwards the trail flattens out and follows the Tugela River, which at this point is merely a small stream. After another half an hour to an hour hiking you will reach the Tugela Falls. Here the river plunges almost 900 meters down the rocks of the amphitheater into the Royal Natal National Park. This is an excellent spot for lunch. For those doing this trail as a day trail, the route back is just a matter of heading back the way you came.

If you are planning on camping here, there are various options. Most hikers stay at the Tugela Falls, although in peak season it can get a bit crowded. The other option is to head East over a small ridge into the next valley. From the Tugela Falls onwards there is no trail anymore. Due to the altitude being in the region of 3000 meters, there are also no trees.

The terrain consists mainly of grassland and rocks, with small streams running north before disappearing over the cliffs of the amphitheater. The water is very clean and drinkable. Looking down these magnificent black cliffs you will see thin pinnacles of rock which themselves are hundreds of meters high. As you walk along the edge of the amphitheater, notice the large cracks in the rocks. The views are really stunning, and spending a night camping here is a wonderful experience!

As our "Raging Thunder" bus towing a trailer loaded with rafts climbed to the top of the Great Dividing Range, the nervous group of men and women shared mixed emotions. Our admiration for the beauty of the pristine rainforest was tempered by the fear of the challenges that lay ahead.

Our fears turned to terror when we saw and heard our pathway to the bottom of the range. It was like a scene from the movie "Deliverance". A fearsome white and brown bucking bronco was eagerly waiting for us. One nervous backpacker from Tulsa Oklahoma took one look at the white, foaming torrent and said, "I can't do it!" Tearfully, she retreated to the safety of the bus.

After some safety drills and instructions from our raft captain our intrepid group was ready to enter the foaming cauldron and tackle our first rapid. It was a twisting beast involving an almost vertical drop.

Amazingly we survived, but other rafts weren't so lucky and overturned. Fortunately our captains were highly skilled and had well rehearsed safety drills. The overturned rafts were soon ready, together with their waterlogged crew, to tackle the next rapid.

The Calm Between the Rapids

In between the rapids, there were periods of calm where we were invited to jump out of the rafts and drift down this beautiful river on our backs like a flotilla of human rafts. Our compulsory lifejackets kept us afloat. The sheer pleasure of floating in the calm, warm water, listening to bird calls and being surrounded on all sides by dense tropical rainforest, was surreal. Ah what bliss!

Shared Experiences

Lunch was taken at a clearing in the rain forest. It allowed us time to share our adventures (and misadventures) as well as enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of this beautiful pristine wilderness rainforest, miles from anywhere. The afternoon journey to the last of the rapids was just as terrifying, but by this stage, we knew what to do and expect.

I am sure the guides had sadistic pleasure from watching our reactions and telling about the terrors of the next set of rapids. Sadly and suddenly, the adrenaline rush came to an end and over drinks at the end of the day, we laughed as we shared our experiences and ranked it as a "must try before you die" adventure.

A Less Challenging Option

Oh by the way, if you think the level ¾ rapids may be a bit too challenging, Raging Thunder has half day rafting adventures on the Barron River, just a short 20 minute drive from Cairns. These rapids, rated 2/3 are simple and less challenging, but still great fun.

Accommodation
The company Raging Thunder operates from Cairns and stops at the pretty coastal resort of Mission Beach on the way. The town has a wide range of accommodation including a superb Youth Hostel called "Treehouse". I stayed 3 nights at Treehouse and used it as a base for exploring the area, including Dunk Island, one of a string of island paradises along the North Queensland coast.

Adventure Travel Wilderness and Hiking Trails Fees Rise

The good news for adventure travel and wilderness hiking trails is that the USA has protected some of the most unique and incredible places to see on earth. Our National, State Parks, Monuments and Wilderness Areas are awesome, but for years there have been reduced number of visitors.

Many citizens have said that a four-year program to increase national parks entrance fees to make them more uniform may discourage some Americans from visiting their national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Zion and Yellowstone.

The National Parks have been faced with a budget crisis. The parks are struggling to protect the historic, cultural and natural resources that the parks were created for. The parks are short of funds for operating facilities, repairs to roads, bridges, trails and buildings. There was an 814 million dollar shortfall in 2006.

There are almost 400 areas of protection covered by the National Parks Service. Almost every park has fewer full time employees now than in 2001, while there were over 273,000,000 visitors to the parks in 2005.

The park service needs more funding to provide education, interpretive and for the safety requirements of their visitors. This is a time of controversy about park fees, current plans for oil, gas and mineral exploration in our parks and of course removing the O'Shaughnessy Dam to restore the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite.

Recently the federal government has moved to replace the National Park Service's $50 annual pass with a new $80 multi-agency pass. Some people think that the fee increases are getting out of line. The park service raised entrance fees at 34 parks over the past two years and plans to raise them at another 124 parks in 2008 and 2009.

At Glacier National Park in Montana and Joshua Tree National Park in California, the fees will go up twice, and beginning in 2011, park officials plan to increase fees every three years, based on inflation. There is a proposal to double entrance fees next year at Crater Lake National Park, now $10 per car.

Will it drive the local visitors away? In 1997, when the park service began raising fees, the number of national parks visitors has fallen 1% while entrance fee revenue has gone up almost 16%. Many of them are from outside the United States and love to visit the American protected lands.

Will the National Park Centennial Act to rescue our parks before 2016 - the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service? The acts purpose is to eliminate the annual operating deficit and maintenance backlog in the national parks. If it passed, it was to create a check off box on American tax returns to fund the parks.

As H.R. 1124 and S 886 it did not get passed in 2006. In spring of 2006 the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report about our National Parks based on research, to the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee that found that funding had not kept pace with need, requiring park managers to reduce services including, "reducing visitor center hours, educational programs, basic custodial duties, and law enforcement operations, such as back-country patrolling.

Additionally, the park system has been forced to close campgrounds, shorten operating hours, eliminate many interpretive programs, lay off many seasonal rangers, and eliminate many of the parks' scientific studies programs.

So where's the good news? Being an outdoor writer and avid traveler to our parks and wilderness areas Bob Therrien, President of TrainingPASS Sales, Inc. has created an outdoor recreation message board, he commented "The hardest part over the years, for me has been the research about which parks, hikes, climbs, locations and activities I want to visit with my family and friends.

Exploring federal then state website after site, then mapping the distance from each area of interest is inefficient and many times lacking in information. To solve that inefficiency we have collected all the basic information about our parks, wilderness areas and national monuments and put them into one website. I don't personally have a problem with the new park fees. It cost's me more to take my family to the movies, and I'd rather enjoy a full day or two at a place like Denali National Park.

If you need an adrenaline rush you can take a white water river trip just out of Jackson Hole down the Snake River. This river run is one of the biggest thrill rides you will ever experience. The landscape along the way from the river is absolutely beautiful so don't miss it by hanging on for dear life.

Grand Teton National Park is near by and just a scenic drive on the Rockefeller Parkway from Yellowstone. There are hiking trails and grand views of the Tetons along the way. You can tent camp at Jenny Lake and enjoy the pristine beauty of the area.

The Temple of the Tooth or "Sri Dalada Maligawa" as its known in local terms is an important religious symbol for those of Buddhist faith. Cornwall: A Breeding Ground for Celtic Saints

For some reason or other, a large proportion of saints appear to come from Cornwall. This may have something to do with the region's history of Celtic missionaries in the area, although not many of these men were actually canonised. Perhaps the area just has a propensity for converting sinners into saints, and you will return from an English walking break in the area holier than ever.

In the 5th and 6th centuries Celtic missionaries began arriving from Ireland and Wales, and started to convert the local people to Christianity. The story of their arrival is enveloped in myth and legend, with stories of these men sailing across the sea on flimsy leaves, having been passed down through the generations.

On arrival, they were challenged by the great giants of Cornwall, where they fought their foes and, with a little divine intervention, were victorious over their towering opponents. When on a walking holiday in the UK, this region is particularly interesting to visit, as you can discover these stories as you stroll the paths once trodden by the saints themselves.

Celtic Saints Sail to Cornwall

The stories of how the saints sailed to Cornwall are intriguing in themselves. St Budoc braved the stormy seas bobbing across in a barrel, while St Piran made the swim using a millstone as a floating device. It is not recommended that you attempt this feat should you go to the region on an English walking break.

St Ia (the founder of St Ives) and St Fingar were perhaps the most impressive of all, as they sailed across the waters on leaves. A UK walking holiday will see you traversing their paths, and could perhaps turn out to be a spiritually enlightening experience.

A Saint for Tin-Miners

St Piran is the patron saint of tin-miners. He sailed to Penhale Sands with a millstone hung around his neck. It is said that he was thrown off an Irish cliff with the stone, and as he hit the water's surface, the waves ceased and he floated on the stone to Penhale.

He is known as the tin-miner's patron saint because he stumbled across the method for making white tin while sitting at the fireside one evening. The heat from the fire cracked open a hearthstone, revealing the shining white tin inside. Retread the path of this patron saint on your English walking break, as you wander through Penhale Sands, where St Piran is reputed to have lived.

St Piran died when he was 300 years old, one night when he was suffering the effects of inebriation and fell down a well!

Cornwall's Official Saint

St Petroc is the official patron saint of Cornwall, arriving from Wales in AD 540. As legend has it, he rid Cornwall of its last dragon, saving the region from its fiery wrath, and making it safe for your UK walking holidays. He also is said to have turned water into nectar, and converted Constantine to Christianity.

There is plenty of parking but you will have to pay. The good news is that there is plenty of free parking at the restaurants and shopping districts. If you are traveling in an RV you will have plenty of parking but only one RV park on the Island.

Sanibel Island is know for it countless shells on the beach, the local government allows you to take as many as you want but please be careful not to take any shells with live critters is them. Let's respect our wildlife and it is also against the law and prohibited by the local authorities.

There is one place on Sanibel Island where the taking of shells is totally prohibited and that's in the Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Just like in all Refuges across the county the taking of anything, even a piece of wood in prohibited.

And now that we are at the Darling National Refuge don't forget to spend some time here. If you are a bird lover you will be in heaven.. Living among the mangroves you will find a rich variety of avian wildlife including herons, egrets, ospreys, and many other avians. The visitor center is a must see with great exhibits and books for sale.

One of the unique aspects of this Refuge is that you can explore on foot, take a 4 mile tram ride, rent a kayak, canoe or a bike. Next to the refuge is Tarpon bay where you can arrange for fishing and nature tours.

Talking about fishing, there is plenty of it. You have the ocean for saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing on the mainland. Don't forget to get your license for the mainland, none is needed for saltwater fishing. There are boats to charter from the many marinas on Sanibel Island.

Love to play golf? There are two public golf courses on the Island. The Beachview Golf Club and the Dunes Golf and Tennis Club.

If you like to bike there a plenty of shops that rent them. The island has marked bike routes in town or you can go out on your own and explore the countryside.

Don't worry about getting hungry, as there are plenty of restaurants on the island. You can have your choice of just about anything you want including seafood, steaks, hamburgers and a variety of other great dishes.

A large fissure in the middle of the hills allows one's eyes to follow a tree-spotted, grassy plain to the Blue Mountains yonder. Adjoining the Kimberleys are the Napier Downs, and together they are run and equal two million acres.

Inhabitants include a dozen white people, 150 aborigines, and animals, specifically about 700 horses and 40,000 cattle. It is a majestic estate with brown gardens from the December weather. The arid weather is due to the fact that no rain has fallen for six months, and dust storms are easily kicked up.

Machu Picchu is considered to be one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It is worthy of the title because it is ancient and mysterious, yet incredibly well preserved. It contains much history that to this day is the subject of debate among archaeologists.

An estimated 1000 people lived in the place for about a hundred years, before abruptly abandoning the site around 1572. Why they left remains unclear even now, although it appears to have been somehow related to the Spanish conquest of the region.

We do know, however, that after the original Inca inhabitants left Machu Picchu, the site remained unseen and untouched by non-natives for over three hundred years.

It was rediscovered by an archaeologist, Hiram Bingham III of Yale University, while he was looking for a unique city in Cuzco. A farmer's son lead Bingham on the Inca trail until they reached the peak of the mysterious Machu Picchu. The archaeologist was then sponsored by National Geographic and Yale University in his endeavor to find explore the site.

The "old mountain" is a popular tourism destination precisely because the site remained untouched for so long. Tourists now flock there at a rate of over one thousand visitors per day.

The vast majority of Picchu tourism originates from the nearby city of Cusco. From there, you can catch a train up the mountain. Another method of reaching the sacred site is by hiking one of the famed Inca Trails, a wondrous network of footpaths that wind among the snow covered mountains, twisting rivers, and spectacular countryside.

This is widely regarded as being among the best trekking routes on Earth, because of the remarkable archeological sites and diverse plant and animal species you'll find along the way.

Jamaica's Black River Crocodile Adventure

Jamaica is such a beautiful country, and Negril, as I have said before, has amazing beaches with crystal blue water. We would have been just fine staying at our all- inclusive resort, because it had everything that we needed. I always want to see everything a country has to offer when visiting it and the Negril side of Jamaica was no exception.

Along Jamaica's South Coast

Comfortable and Safe excursions are only achieved when you use a licensed and insured company to provide your tour. There are many tour operators in Jamaica that I trust. We always felt totally safe and comfortable in our air conditioned van, as we drove to Jamaica's south coast toward our Black River croc adventure.

We drove for about an hour, until we reached the town of Black River, located where the Black River flows into the Caribbean Sea. The Black river is Jamaica's longest river and is a fantastic place to see many types of animals, such as Egrets, Cranes, and of course crocodiles.

In fact, the Black River is the main crocodile area in all of Jamaica. The river got its name because of its dark color which is caused from the tannins that stain the water, not from pollution. In fact I did not see any signs of pollution anywhere in Jamaica.

The Crocodile Hunter
Our tour began at the mouth of the black river where it flows into the Caribbean Sea. I think we had the best tour guide that was available, because he was entertaining, and as you will read, and see, did some extra things that we were told the other tour guides won't do, because it is too dangerous! We were now all on the boat heading up the Black River in search of Crocodiles. Our guide did point out some Egrets and some baby crocs that we saw while we were still getting started.

Looking For Crocs!

Well the baby crocodile was cute, but we didn't go on this tour to see a baby crocodile, we were looking for big crocodiles! Our guide took us up river quite a distance until we reached a split in the river. The area to the left was the part of the river that flowed down from the mountains, and the water to the right, was where the Crocodiles tended to congregate. I

t wasn't long before we saw a large Crocodile lying in the sun on the river bank. We slowed boat and came to a complete stop. What happened next was so unbelievable!

WOW! Patricia the friendly Crocodile! (If you have food)

I want to remind everyone that we were in the wild. We were not at any crocodile farm, or zoo, we were right in the middle of the Black River. All of a sudden, this crocodile, our guide called "Patricia" started swimming toward the boat. While it was swimming, our guide put his hand in the water and was calling the crocodile, saying "come, come, come, while splashing the water with his hand.

When she came close to the boat, he put some chicken skin in the water and the croc suddenly lunged for the food with a huge splash! Then he let us pet the crocodile as she came right next to the boat. For some great pictures of our encounter with Patricia, check out our blog post.

Our guide left Patricia and showed us a couple other regulars, and called them over to the boat, but told us that we could not get that close to the others, because they had a tendency to jump at the boat, or any hands and arms that were hanging off the boat. YIKES!

A Great Lunch

It was a great time to interact with the crocodiles in their own environment. When we arrived back at the dock, we were greeted with an authentic Jamaican lunch! We all enjoyed it very much and they had a very nice eating area there that was comfortable. The tour was a great deal, as we got to go on the croc adventure, have lunch provided, and then it was off to the Y.S Falls!

Fitness Levels For Trekking In Thailand

For short hikes of one to two days in Thailand, a reasonable level of physical fitness is required. This means that they are suitable for almost anyone. For hikes longer than two days, an adventurous nature and good physical fitness is needed.

During your Thailand trek, you'll be walking through the wilderness with a rucksack (meaning there will be lots of sweating and in the rainy season, or if you are unlucky enough to catch a cloudburst, getting wet).

The sanitary facilities during this part of your Thailand trip will be primitive to say the least - on the hike, behind the 'bushes' or in this case bamboo trees - and the primitive overnight accommodation while visiting the mountain people (on a wooden floor with a sleeping mat) are not everyone's cup of tea! It may not be the most comfortable experience of your life, but it will definitely help to make your Thailand trip something to really remember.

Evenings In The Thai Mountain Villages

Apart from the daily physical demands of your activities, an essential part of trekking in Thailand is being a part of the village atmosphere in the morning and evening. In the evening, you can relax and take in village life from beside an open fire, a real highlight of any Thailand trip. Your guide will prepare your evening meal made from locally produced ingredients.

You might even be able to have a chat with the locals using your guide as an interpreter. Your guide not only knows the region like the back of his hand, he also knows the local languages of the different mountain peoples and can tell you all about their culture.

While you're trekking in Northern Thailand, you'll sleep in a wooden hut on the outskirts of the village. There will be no electricity or running water, and your bed will be made up of a plastic mat on a bamboo floor raised off the ground by stilts. This is Thailand travel at its most basic and most brilliant.

What to take with you on your Thailand trek?

A few items are important to have with you (besides adventurer's blood) while you're travelling in Thailand;

• rucksack (day sack)

• cotton sleeping bag (blankets are available locally)

• sleeping mat, mosquito net, and sometimes a sleeping bag

• short- and long-sleeved shirts

• shorts an d long trousers

• poncho or waterproof jacket and trousers, backpack cover

• water bottle (can be borrowed on location)

• torch - whether you're travelling in Thailand or anywhere else, a torch is indispensable.

• insect repellent - essential throughout your Thailand trip

• hat or cap

• sun block cream

• enough camera film rolls or spare SD card

• if necessary travel sickness tablets for a somewhat rough ride in a pickup truck

• earplugs (think about the excited pigs when they get their food first thing in the morning, or your snoring travel companions)

• sandals/flip flops

• toilet paper

Remember that you whatever you take while you're travelling in Thailand, you're going to have to carry on your back. You can leave the bulk of your luggage in your hotel in Chiang Mai, and remember to lock your valuables away in the safe. Good quality, well broken-in shoes, with a good tread, are an absolute must during your Thailand trek. Toilet paper and other day-to-day essentials are not always available for purchase en route.

What not to take on your Thailand trekking trip

• expensive jewellery

• nice but vulnerable clothing (gets a bit dirty on top of an elephant)

For local people, every foreigner that they come across is rich. If you really want to give something to the local people, you're better off making a donation towards the village school. You can talk to your guide about arranging this during your Thailand trip.

The seasons

The best period to travel to northern Thailand is from November to February. The weather at this time is nice and relatively cool with little or no rain. The next best period for travelling in northern Thailand is June or July, the beginning of the rainy season, when the unpaved roads are not yet turned into a mud bath.

The next best period is between March and May - no rain, dry and hot, because there's less foliage it's not so green. Whenever you choose to travel in Thailand, you're bound to have a great time.

The climate of Shetland is the other notable topic of conversation here. Visitors expect it to be much colder than it usually is. While the islands don't get real heat waves in summer, it can be very pleasantly warm, and winters tend to be much milder than expected too.

The inhabited islands in Shetland, with the exception of three, are connected with Mainland, the largest island, by an integrated inter-island ferry service. Trondra, Burra Isle and Muckle Roe are close enough to Mainland to have a bridge connection. Some of the outer isles also have regular air flights, notably Foula and Fair isle.

Most of the islands have their own heritage centre, or small community museum. Along with the much larger and very new Shetland Museum in Lerwick, this network of visitor centres are an excellent way to discover the islands' secrets as each one is quite different to all the rest.

Vacationing In Fleurieu Peninsula on the South Australian Coast

The Fleurieu Peninsula is in the state of South Australia, to the south of Adelaide, the state's capital city. The peninsula was named by the French explorer Nicolas Baudin, in honor of fellow explorer Charles Pierre Claret de Fleurieu. The peninsula is an attractive and picturesque place.

There are surfing beaches at Browns Bay and at Waitpinga, historic and attractive towns such as Willunga and Victor Harbor, and wine growing areas, including the renowned McLaren Vale area. From the peninsula it is possible to take a ferry to Kangaroo Island.

Victor Harbor is the peninsula's largest center of population. In 1802 there was a famous encounter between Matthew Flinders, sailing on HMS Investigator, and Nicolas Baudin, on Le Geographe. The Englishman was exploring along the South Australian coast while sailing east; the Frenchman was exploring in the opposite direction.

The Investigator and Le Geographe both sheltered in the bay which is now named Encounter Bay. There the two captains compared notes on their voyages, apparently unaware that England was at war with France.

Nowadays Victor Harbor is a very popular holiday destination, and it is reckoned that the population is tripled during the summer season. Many visitors take the short journey (by horse drawn tram!) across the causeway to Granite Island, the home of a large Fairy Penguin colony. The birds can be seen setting off to sea each morning, and returning at sunset, after a day spent hunting for fish.

Whale spotting is another form of amusement at Victor Harbor. The season for this is from June until September, when the Southern Right Whales come inshore for mating and calving. Useful whale spotting tips can be found at the South Australian Whale Centre.

Other visitors to Victor Harbor enjoy fishing and surfing. There is also a preserved railway terminus in the town: the Cockle Railway runs steam hauled and other services to Goolwa.

The state of South Australia is the largest wine producer in Australia, responsible for more than 50 per cent of the nation's production. There are several wine producing regions in the Fleurieu Peninsula, but McLaren Vale is the largest and best known. The vale's climate is classified as Mediterranean. Summers are warm and dry, and both droughts and winter frosts are rare due to the coastal location.

The main variety of grape produced in McLaren Vale is Shiraz, but there is also substantial production of Chardonnay, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. As might be expected there are a number of wine and food attractions and events in the area.

In June one can visit the McLaren Vale Sea and Vines Festival, which combines excellent wines and sea food, with live music events. There are also many culinary events in October, when it is Fiesta time. As McLaren Vale is only 35 km from Adelaide many of these events will be in easy reach of visitors to the state capital.

One can find Fleurieu Peninsula accommodation to suit most budgets. In particular there are many self catering complexes and other types of accommodation in Victor Harbor. The Breeze Apartments, which are on Flinders Parade, have a range of luxury apartments. More budget priced alternatives can be found in beachfront holiday parks.

1. Downhill Skiing & Snowboarding - Skiing and snowboarding are high-speed thrills that make downhillers wish for more of the white stuff! Vancouver has Whistler; Calgary has Banff and Montreal has Mont Tremblant. And there are plenty of local hills to brush up on techniques early in the season.

Ski season starts in mid-November and runs until May. The busiest, and most expensive, time at the ski resorts is around Christmas and spring break when families head to the hills in droves. But with new high-speed ski-lifts, queues on the hill are often shorter than the lineups in the parking lots and restaurants.

* The best time to go downhill skiing is mid-week when the lift-lines are non-existent and the runs are uncrowded.

* Snowboarding is as popular as skiing and now makes up more than half of all downhillers.

* Hotel prices are usually cheaper mid-week. Ask at the concierge desk if lift tickets can be purchased in advanced, usually at a discount.

* Discount lift-tickets are available early in the season and offer savings that last throughout the ski-season.

2. Cross-Country Skiing - Not all people are as courageous (or crazy enough) to strap boards to their feet and hurtle down a mountain. For those who are downhill-challenged, try cross-country skiing instead. It's like walking but only faster; similar to skating but without the falls; akin to running but not as strenuous.

There are only a few nordic centers in the country dedicated to cross-country skiers but any snow covered trail is worth exploring. To get in shape at the beginning of the ski-season, try training at a local golf course. Then head out to the backcountry for a cool day of sliding and gliding.

3. Snowmobiling - Snowmobiling is fast, fun and exciting. Enjoy a family outing zipping through snowy fields, sparkling powder and spectacular scenery. Whizzing along forest trails is a great way to spend a sunny, winter day in the Canadian backcountry. Guided snowmobile tours in Canada are available to take sledders along pathways to places usually inaccessible at other times of the year. Ontario alone has over 30,000 kilometers of trails while Revelstoke, BC offers 12-18 meters of the white stuff (yes, meters). The quiet beauty and virgin snow is breathtaking and unforgettable.

4. Skating - Indoor arenas are fundamental to every community in this hockey-loving nation and many municipalities also maintain outdoor skating areas as well. Calgary has a natural rink in Bowness Park; Winnipeg has the 5.7 kilometer River Trail and of course, Ottawa has the Rideau Canal, a World Heritage Site. Enjoy a warm winter day on a frozen waterway and bring back childhood memories of playing on the ice.

5. Snowshoeing - Hiking in Canada doesn't have to come to an end once the snow accumulates on the ground. As a winter substitute, strap on some lightweight snowshoes and follow your favourite trails to see the frozen backcountry. Snowshoeing is similar to hiking except trekkers can make their own trails. Scrub-brush and felled trees are buried deep below the powdery snow allowing showshoers to easily float on top. Take more direct routes up hills, tromp over buried thicket and follow frozen creeks & streams to secret winter locations.

6. Winter Camping - Instead of packing the tent away for 6 months, try a winter camping trip! Die-hard campers can pitch a tent and hunker down for the night any place that is sheltered from the wind. Combined with snowshoeing, winter camping is quiet and uncrowded. The soft snow under the tent makes for comfortable bedding. And hot chocolate has never tasted so good.

7. Caving - Caving in Canada is warm! Buried deep underground, the natural warmth of the earth keeps caverns at a constant temperature throughout the year, usually around +5 C. Once inside, winter quickly fade as cavers descend into a dark and damp chute below the surface. Guided tours provide protective equipment and gear to take you into a different world of narrow passageways, mineral deposits and crystal-clear pools. Those people who are claustrophobic will find the narrow crevasses truly a once-in-a-life-time experience.

8. Sailing - The North Pacific Ocean near the BC coast is always +10 C making for year round sailing adventures. From November to March, rain showers are frequent but avid sailors can still get their thrills amongst the Gulf Islands and fjords of Vancouver Island. The westerly winds are strong and constant off of the Pacific Ocean, making for exciting and anxious sailing adventures. Bring rain gear and a VHF radio to monitor the weather since winter storms can produce gale force winds. Fog is west-coast trademark.

This statue provides variety throughout the year as there are times it is dressed in costumes so you really know exactly what you are going to see. A futuristic theme is completed in the Atomium which is a statue symbolizing a molecule and dedicated to progress. You can enjoy an elevator ride to the top of the sphere of this statue and you will be treated to a breathtaking view of the city.

Much more is provided for the art lover in visits to the Musees Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire art museum and the Musees Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique. These contain works of art from all over the world.

Since Belgium beer is known around the world, you will not want to miss the opportunity to sample some of the different types of beer brewed here. New Zealand - One of the Most Beautiful Countries In The World

"Clean", "Green", "God Zone" - these are but a few of the names given to New Zealand. And little wonder when you consider that because of its relatively small population and isolation, it still contains some of the most pure and beautiful scenery anywhere to be found.

Just take for example the fresh water that you can drink. In New Plymouth, a small city located in Taranaki, you can drink water straight from a well that has its source under Mount Taranaki, that is full of natural minerals and is some of the most healthiest waters you can possibly drink.

The sky is clear blue, beautiful oceans from turquoise green in Kaikora to pearl blue in Picton with beaches ranging from black iron sand to golden and even white sand. If you are fortunate enough to visit this country then you will be amazed by some of the beaches located in the Bay Of Islands.

Many of these beaches are home to a wide array of edible shellfish. Many of the beaches are so isolated that very few people visit them and so have an abundance of fresh fish. Recently the Woman's World surfing champs were held in New Zealand due to its amazing surf beaches.

As you travel the countryside you will be amazed by the green coverage of grass that's like a deep velvet carpet as most of New Zealand's export is dairy and meat products. This carpet of green is then covered by much native bush and pine forests. For those who like skiing, there are a number of ski mountains in both the North and South Islands. One such world famous place is Queenstown located at the bottom of the South Island.

The South Island is full of Mountain ranges, bush, Lakes and rivers. Lakes so clear you can see the bottom. If you havnt done so already then Google New Zealand images and see for yourself whats in store for you before you visit.

Due to its temperate zone the weather is warm and good for growing all sorts of flowers and vegetables. But if you do visit during summer remember to bring a hat some shades and some sunscreen as the ozone layer is thinner in this region of the world and so burning in the sun is highly likely.
