Caribbean in the Winter

Sometimes, a bowl of hot soup or layers upon layers of comforter just isn't giving you any reprieve from the chill of winter months.

As much as food and apparel is designed to give some warmth during days full of snow, there's just no replacing dry weather and a blazing summer sun.

When you've been counting the days for winter to end, maybe it's time to head to a warmer place like the Caribbean.

The Caribbean offers a cruise to tourists because of one thing: the diversity of its islands. While they promise to give you different experiences, the islands promise an endless bathing in warmth and sun that you would have missed during winter months.

Good news is that all that sun and warmth are available with reasonable, even cheap prices. You could do some serious forgetting of the winter chill without having to sell your television!

Bahamas would be a dream after seeing all cold because of its beaches. You get to see white because of the white sand and frolic in water without fear of getting frozen.

Swimming would be well and good, but tourists of Bahamas should never forget snorkeling. Winter is defined by almost-death by frozen water, so seeing all the life underwater would give a great other perspective.

A summer, even a simulated, alternative one, is not complete without some music to dance to. The Caribbean also has Jamaica, which is host to best experience of the Rasta culture in the world.

Think of Bob Marley and the beat of the drums and the vision of a sweaty, sexy summer party immediately comes to mind as well.

Jamaica seems to be eternally associated with the party on the beach. Go there and you'll be a Marley fan and never experience winter, musically, at least.

If you're looking for adventure, then a visit to the Caymans would be a good place to start. The Caymans and the other islands are popular for island-hopping. You'll be able to see a lot of different sites.

If it's a family vacation, the children wouldn't get bored if you do island-hopping. Not only will they be distracted by the different islands but they will also be awestruck by how beautiful the Caymans alone are.

So, for the winter months, it's a good idea to take the family to the Caribbean for warmth and a whole new perspective on what summer should be.

Shimba Hills

A mere forty-five minutes from the hot and humid Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa, is Shimba, located in the Shimba National Reserve. Walk with the Elephants, Buffaloes and the endangered Sable Antelope in the cool and refreshing jungle greens of Shimba Hills tropical rain forest.

Although Shimba is only 48km from Mombasa, it has a refreshingly cool climate with a remarkably cool, fresh breeze from the Indian Ocean. It is one of the largest areas of coastal rainforests in East Africa that includes the Mijikenda tribe's sacred Kaya forest.

The Shimba Hills Lodge located in the national reserve has been beautifully constructed from indigenous timber where you can wine, dine and unwind at the spectacular award-winning tree lodge which overlooks a waterhole. There are also two campsites within the park but many hotels in Mombasa are close by so you can visit Shimba on a day trip.

Shimba is home to a variety of species including Elephants, Giraffe, Hyena and Buffalo as well as the rare Roan and Sable antelope. The forests are home to a number of unusual species including the Black and White Colobus monkeys, Serval cats, Red Duiker and Suni Antelope.

An abundance of birdlife is found among the hills, including Honey guides, Turacos, woodpeckers and Sunbirds. The Sable Antelope is considered the most beautiful of the large antelope and Shimba Hills contains Kenya's only population of the endangered species.

The area also houses rare plants including two of most beautiful types of orchid in Kenya, and more than 250 different species of butterflies that live in the rainforest.

There are over five hundred elephants in the reserve and so although Elephant Hill is the ideal place to view these great animals, they can be spotted all over the reserve. A fenced corridor has been built that links the Shimba National Reserve to Mwalunganje forest and its elephant sanctuary.

The reserve has thick rainforest cover where the animals prefer to keep cool during the hot day but the best views of the animals are from the eastern side of the park, near Giriama Point in the late afternoon, where you can see the animals moving towards the rivers to quench their thirst.

Guided night drives are also available - you're sure to hear the hyenas and, if you're really lucky, you may even spot a leopard.

The main attraction of the park is the spectacular 25m high Sheldrick Falls. There is a two-kilometer marked footpath to the cascading falls where you can safely swim in the pool or have a picnic by the falls. A ranger is available at 10am and 3pm to accompany visitors on this walk at no charge.

Prego Hill is the highest point in the park at 450km. From here, there is an incredible view of the Tsavo Plains, Taita Hills, and on a really clear day, Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Before you leave this beautiful National Reserve, you can buy a unique souvenir at the gates - paper made from elephant dung!

Back Door to Ecuador

I was never a boy scout ( which is probably the root of my personality disorder). Yet, I do think there is a a great benefit to being prepared for all real and imagined future challenges.

You know, the potential of a total economic collapse and extinction caused by glacial melting, huge populations that go to bed hungry each night, environmental degradation, job layoffs, global interdependency, and wars everywhere.

Whew, there you have it, and if that hasn't caused you to fill your prescription bottle of Zoloft or Valium, your spiritual practice is indeed working.

It does appear at times, that we are sauntering down the same trail as the Maya, who grab blog space these day s as the "end times" rapidly approach.

No one seems to mention the fate of the Easter Islands inhabitants, or the Anazasi on Fox news these days, and then of course blame their demise on President Obama.

Go figure! We tend to ignore to the failures of our predecessors, who like us, were riding high on the hog, boasting monarchs and noble people, who continually vied to outdo each others' lavishness (think CEOs) before 'mysteriously" their whole kit and caboodle vanished.

Unless of course, you were a paleontologist lucky enough to find a crystal ball left by a pack rat in their mizzen and decipher history; and concluded those ancient societies also displayed short sighted tendencies.

That coupled with greed brought them to their knees. That's why my new book "Cannibal Stew" will be available in PDF form shortly. You can take it with you through your back door to a quiet third world paradise, just in case.

My present day back door escape route is to the equatorial paradise (depending on your viewpoint) of Ecuador. Here a gringo can snatch and carve up a piece land where the descendants of ancient Indian tribes have trod for millennia.

Just like Columbus did when he discovered 10 million Indians living quite nicely without the headache of the European Union. That was until Columbus decided he discovered the Americas and introduced deadly diseases and self-righteous diatribe.

Then land ownership changed hands, using the infamous slaughter exchange method, a very effective technology employed by the fat cats who created the "dog eat dog" world viewpoint.

Now there are offshoots of that "exchange rate" amongst the pale faces who slide-on-down the latitudinal ladder, and build their version of Boca Raton, changing the landscape because they can, and trampling around wearing high tech clothing.

Some of these modern conquistadores are totally oblivious to the soul of the indigenous folks, who themselves sometimes stray and become banditos in retaliation for the perceived inequalities... inciting fear in the helpless viejo gringos, driving them back to their respective police states.

So, why would anyone want to move down to a land where most of it is lacking all the phenomenal luxuries of the 21 century? Electricity can be absent on a daily basis.

Home phones are often non existent and Verizon's coverage map looks like some kid took an eraser to the black board and removed all the red within the outline! Like nada dude! Internet, well its there, but sometimes you have to travel by burro, bus or taxi to get it.

You know, you just can't shop at will with your MacBook Pro, buying all those mostly unnecessary items to satisfy the modern equivalent of hunting and gathering. The beauty of the place is its time quality.

Its the subtle sweetness of having nothing to do, but just be in a land that has been inhabited by an indigenous population for thousands of years. Its an inexpensive country with multiple ecosystems from ocean to jungle to high altiplano.

And, they use our money system, the greenback, so no exchange rate headaches. Just fill your pockets, the dough gets stretched a long way down yonder. So if you are consider retiring early, or just fed up with what it takes to operate in this world, consider Ecuador.

But, don't forget to bring your guitar, camera, Spanish language course, and a Kindle filled with thousands of books. You just might find yourself far from the maddening crowd with lots of time on your hands. And, did I tell you it boasts some of the most stunning vistas in the world?

Things to Keep in Mind When Preparing For a Backpacking Adventure

Serious backpackers and hikers know how important it is to keep your carrying equipment as light as possible.

This will help ensure that you are able to hike the distance you need to go and in much less time. In order to do this, you will need to make sure that your three main pieces of equipment, the backpack, sleeping bag, and shelter, all weigh less than five pounds combined.

Sure it would be nice to take all the amenities with us on our backpacking experiences, but half the fun is surviving on the essentials and using Mother Nature and the land as our playground.

If you were to pack more than just the items you need, you wouldn't be able to get far, you may have a sore back, and depending on conditions, it could be extremely hazardous to your health.

Some of the basic equipment you are going to need would include a knife, matches, first aid kit, water, food, and even a whistle to use in emergency situations.

If there are a lot of you going on this excursion, you can always spread other important items amongst more items like a map, flashlight, and sunscreen Any more than that is going to weigh your pack down too much. But your safety is the most important thing to consider, so pack accordingly, but pack light.

As I mentioned earlier, you can significantly cut down on the weight of your equipment by buying lightweight essentials.

They do make super lightweight backpacks, shelters, and even sleeping bags that weigh less than 3 pounds.

So if you can cut back the weight on these three items alone, it will make things much easier and will allow you to pack more items.

Avoid buying big and bulky backpacks. It may seem like a good idea to buy something that has a ton of gadgets, compartments, zippers, and pockets for a hiking trip. But a simple backpack with a lightweight frame is the wisest way to go.

Same thing with sleeping bags. A big and bulky sleeping bag is in no way a smart decision. Light weight bags don't mean you are going to be giving away comfort or sleep at night.

These bags are made with down and will keep you plenty warm at night. Buy your bag according to the weather you are going to use it in.

They make summer bags for temperatures around forty-degrees that weigh only a pound! Colder temperature bags shouldn't weigh more than three.

Keep in mind that the lighter the equipment, the more fragile it will be. So take extra caution to take extremely good care of your new hiking and camping equipment and it will last a lot longer.

Learn more about where to find Ultralight Sleeping Bags and what to look for. Visit Matt's new Sleeping Bags Kids website to find bags for your kids as well.

Searching For Adventure in Alaska's Southeast Wilderness

Anyone who has had the opportunity to visit Alaska is instantly struck by the shear enormity of the state. From southwest Alaska's Bristol Bay region with its meandering river valleys and volcanic cinder cones, to southeast Alaska's remote island chains, Alaska defies to be described easily.

For those looking to escape from the throngs of anglers and cruise ship passengers, consider southeast Alaska's Prince of Wales Island (POW). About 135 miles long and located 45 miles from Ketchikan, POW offers visitors a wealth of wildlife, native culture and superb fresh and saltwater fishing.

There are over 30 full service lodges located on POW. The majority are located on the protected eastern side while several exceptional lodges located on the west coast offer access to the rugged coastline where sea lion colonies and large marine mammals like Orca and Humpback Whales feed on the millions of bait fish which inhabit the nutrient rich waters. Waterfall Resort and El Capitan Lodge must be considered by the serious angler as they both enjoy a reputation of putting guest on the fish.

For a great multisport adventure, The Lodge at Whale Pass offers guest the opportunity to explore the La Conte Glacier by kayak, or floatplane.

The calm waters of Chatham Strait are ideal for trolling for silver salmon and family adventures. Access to salmon hatcheries, and bear observatories make Prince of Wales east coast a big draw for family vacations, father son fishing trips, and romantic getaways.

Access to Prince of Wales Island is limited to ferry, boat or floatplane from Ketchikan. I recommend visiting mid June through late August.

Keep in mind that southeast Alaska is a temperate rain forest, so rain should be expected at some point during your adventure. The locals refer to it as "liquid sunshine."

There are other regions one can escape tourists in Alaska, but southeast Alaska lush green hemlock and cedar covered mountains and ancient old growth forests, are unique to this region and are sure to delight and inspire the most well traveled adventurers.

http://www.alaskalodgesandyachts.com is where you can discover Alaska's most sought after sport fishing, yachting and wilderness adventures. Our expertise in Alaska will insure that your next adventure will exceed all expectations.

Safari Vacation Advice

A safari vacation to Africa can be a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience. There are safari vacation packages available for families, couples, and even seniors.

The pristine beauty of Africa and its exotic wildlife are an experience everyone should enjoy at least once.

When traveling on safari there are some basic guidelines and travel tips you should consider. For this reason, we offer our safari vacation advice.

Wear colors that blend in with the environment. Neutral colors like tan, beige, khaki, olive-green, brown, and gray are recommended.

Bring plenty of batteries for digital cameras and video devices. If you use a battery charger, be certain to have a 12-volt adapter that can be plugged into a vehicle, as not all camps have a 220/240-volt electrical supply.

Never photograph locals without getting their permission first.

Support local businesses by buying local goods and beware of cheap transportation like buses and mini-taxis, which are often under-serviced and overloaded.

Do due diligence about the country where you are traveling. Research the regulations, customs, and traditions so you are a good visitor and not a rude tourist on safari vacation.

Remember to use water sparingly; it is a limited resource in Africa.

You may bring gifts for local children and villagers, but they should be of an educational type. Picture books of Western Culture, coloring books and crayons are usually very appreciated and are inexpensive for you to supply. Do not offer money or food.

Never litter while on a safari vacation.

Be aware of baggage restrictions, which are commonly twenty-six pounds of luggage for light air transfers and forty-four pounds of luggage for regularly scheduled air flight.

Before coming to Africa, take preventative measures to avoid contracting malaria on your safari vacation.

Most travelers who have gone through the correct preventions never have to worry about malaria. Talk to your doctor prior to your safari vacation and take all the advice offered about malaria.

Make sure you drink enough water while in Africa on safari vacation. You need to consume four to six pints a day to remain hydrated.

Avoid too much tea, coffee, and alcohol, as these beverages often have a diuretic affect and can cause dehydration.

Most water throughout Southern Africa is safe to drink straight from the tap, but there is plenty of bottled water around.

Just be thoughtful about how you use this water as it is a very valuable natural resource and locals will take offense if you are wasteful or trivial about your water supply while on a safari vacation.

Make sure you have a good pair of sunglasses, binoculars, and plenty of sunscreen of SPF 15 or above. Have light cover-up clothing that you can wear during the hottest parts of the day.

Check your skin frequently, as tics are prevalent. They can easily be dealt with by using petroleum jelly to remove them.

You should be certain to have money and baggage insurance and always have your expensive video equipment and binoculars, etc. as walk-on items. Remove valuable items from check-in baggage.

You will enjoy your safari vacation immensely. If you are traveling to Africa on a safari vacation for the first time, it is guaranteed that this is a trip you will remember fondly all of your life.

Simply use prudence and have good manners while on your journey and you will have a rewarding experience.

800 Cheetahs Are on the Prowl in Kenya

Cheetahs, along with the African lion and leopards, are some of the "Big Cats" that live in Kenya. Their trademark features are their spotted light brown coat and black tearline that runs down either side of the face.

Anyone who has ever seen one will always say they look quite sad, an expression that comes from the appearance of black tears running from the inside corner of each eye.

There's no need to worry though, they aren't tears but a special antiglare mechanism that helps these animals keep their eyes firmly on the prey in the shimmering savannah heat.

Speed

The Ferrari of the animal world; the cheetahs are the world's fastest animals, sleek with great traction control. It can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour over short distances due to its long slim muscular legs, a small head, deep chest, flexible tail and a long tail.

Lightening Bolt

These Kenya animals received some welcome international publicity recently when Usain Bolt, the world's fastest man, adopted a cub and named him "Lightening Bolt."

The champion sprinter from Jamaica was on a four day trip to Kenya to help a German charity the Zeitz Foundation launch a new conservation initiative when he met a three month old cub and named him after himself. It's unbelievable that one day it will run faster than he can.

Family-Oriented

Cheetahs are solitary animals; they prefer to be alone rather than spending time with others with the only exception being when a mother is bringing up her cubs. They are what every mother should be, patient and protective.

They spend about a year teaching their cubs the craft of hunting, even getting the cubs to practice stalking and chasing live prey. The mother then spends another year and a half with the cubs before they leave to face the wild world on their own. The males, live in small groups of two or three, normally with their littermates.

What do Cheetahs Eat?

Unlike most of its relatives in the cat family, these cats hunt early in the morning or evening, getting as close as possible to the target prey before breaking into a chase. Once they've knocked their prey to the ground, they suffocate it with a bite to the neck. It's all very quick, and if they are lucky enough to go unseen they will drag their catch to a shady hiding place.

Eating also has to be done very quickly as other predators such as the African lion, hyenas and vultures are soon on the scene and don't give up. This cat is timid and won't argue with bullies, it would rather walk away and leave them to the meal.

So, on the menu are mouth-watering dishes such as impalas, gazelles, warthogs, hares, jackals and also birds. Cheetahs only need to drink every three to four days so water doesn't exactly top the list of priorities.

Habitat

The food requirements dictate where you can usually find these cats. Their favorite habitat is the wide open and partially open Savannah.

In addition, they need some cover such as long grass, bush and shrubs in order to adequately stalk their victims before pouncing. Some of the best places in Kenya with this sort of terrain are the Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park.

The film set wilderness of the Masai Mara is a huge expanse of land, reaching to the border with Tanzania and covers 320 square km. The park's ecosystem attracts a great number of animals with these cats being lured by the park's open grasslands.

Amboseli National Park is much smaller but has some beautiful views, especially of Africa's highest mountain, the Kilimanjaro. What's of more interest to cheetahs though is the dry river bed of Lake Amboseli on the western side of the park. Although it sometimes floods during the rainy season, most of the time, it provides lots of open ground suitable for the chase.

If you're only in Nairobi for a short time and can't get to the parks, the Nairobi Safari Walk is a great place to see one of these cats in quasi-wild conditions. Just walk along the raised boardwalk, through the savannah and keep your eyes peeled.

After you arrive at the lodge you are taken to get acquainted with the dogs and are given the equipment so that you learn about it and are comfortable with it.

The lodge where you spend the first and last day of the trip overlooks the beautiful white Norton Sound.

But the dogs are well trained and know the route and directions well; they know where to go and what should be avoided.

Whenever we stop over for the night the dogs are cared for and looked after. Since they are truly the hard workers of the trip.

The next day we headed towards the Golsovia River Lodge which is again a 25 mile long stretch of white wilderness with pine and coniferous trees along the way.

The journey has a 7 mile stretch that moves upwards, although not a steep stretch it definitely needs a lot of working and giving a little push with your feet whenever the dogs find it difficult, makes them respect you.

Here is where we all rest for a couple of days and take pleasure in other Alaskan activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and looking out for wildlife.

Some common find are the hawks, falcons, wolves, moose, arctic fox, and eagles. The huskies are well trained, strong and very lovable making this adventure trip even more memorable.

The Grand Mosque Oman

The Grand Mosque of Oman is the creation of the current ruler of Oman, Sultan Qaboos. In the early 1990's, the Sultan decided that his country should have a grand mosque to compete with those of other Muslim countries.

A nationwide competition was held for its design in which hundreds of applicants submitted their designs for the building of the mosque. After the winner and a building site were chosen, construction on the mosque commenced in 1995.

It took almost six and a half years for the project to be completed. However, in May of 2001, it was completed and christened by the Sultan. Constructed from Indian sandstone, the mosque cuts an imposing figure. However, it is a beloved house of worship for many Muslims.

The main prayer hall, which is called a musalla, can house up to seven thousand worshippers at once. There is also a woman's musalla which can hold almost seven hundred and fifty worshippers.

In addition to these prayer halls, there are also covered passageways, meeting halls, and a library.

The library is currently filled with almost 20,000 books. All in all, the mosque can house 20,000 worshippers at any one given time.

The outer courtyard of the mosque allows for the accommodation of 8,000 worshippers alone. The passageways and the inner courtyard also offer room for pilgrims to practice their religious faith.

The craftsmanship and detail that cover the interior of the mosque is truly astounding. The interior is constructed almost entirely of marble in colors of gray and off white.

Tile work, in various floral patterns, adds a sense of elegance to the many murals that are found in the hallways of the mosque. Verses from the Koran, framed in gold, adorn the walls of the two prayer halls.

Two of the most prominent, and most famous, features of the Grand Mosque are its Persian carpet and its chandelier. The Persian carpet is used as a prayer carpet. It is the largest hand-woven carpet in the world.

Weighing over 21 tons, it took four years to complete. Over six hundred women from various provinces in Iran were involved in its making.

The chandelier in the men's prayer hall is another point of interest to visitors. It is comprised mostly of gold plated metal work, and it also is covered in Swarovski crystals.

The chandelier is over fourteen meters tall. In addition to its primary purpose as a house of worship, the Grand Mosque is also used as an epicenter of Islamic learning.

It has built a reputation as a prominent institute of advanced Islamic studies, with educational facilities and housing accommodations available onsite. TMariya_Wordsworth he primary form of Islam that is studied at the Grand Mosque is Ibadi.

One of the most ancient sects of Islam, Ibadi is tolerant of many other religions and it shows respect towards women, elevating them even to the highest levels of government available.

Because of this religious toleration, people of all faiths are welcome to worship at the Grand Mosque of Oman.

What is the Advantage of Having a Toy Hauler?

In the beginning, a toy hauler was a basic trailer for carrying heavy loads of snowmobiles, quads, and other small outdoor recreational vehicles to a place where their owners could enjoy them. Since then, some of them have developed into so much more.

You can purchase a toy hauler with just the basics, or you can buy one with all of the space and amenities of a Class A Motorhome, plus the advantage of having a built-in garage to go.

What are some of the uses of a toy hauler?

Beyond the obvious use of carrying around ATVs, jet skis, and dune buggies, these Sport Utility Recreational Vehicles are good for recreational travel on their own.

You can take them camping, and use them for temporary housing in an emergency. They are great for families who have different interests.

Those who prefer to go somewhere and then stay put have the luxury of the motorhome. Motorsports enthusiasts can take their toys along, and enjoy exploring the great outdoors with like minded enthusiasts.

Getting full use of the garage

The garage of your toy hauler will have an easy to clean floor, and you can utilize it in various ways. You may have utility cabinets for storage and work benches for projects. With chairs and a sofa added, it can serve as a large living area.

Hideaway beds transform it into extra sleeping space for larger families or guests. Optional fuel tanks in the garage facilitate refueling your toys.

Things to consider when you are ready to buy a toy hauler

You already know that a toy hauler is a huge investment. It follows then, that you want to go cautiously as you consider your needs.

Some dealers offer RV rentals, and this would help you make decisions about what you want. Do you have a vehicle that can pull the weight of a combined RV and toy hauler with a full garage?

Will you be using it mostly in the summer, or in the winter? Research the different brands for their reputations. You can save considerable sums of money if you can find good used RV sales.

Be sure you go over both new and used trailers to make sure everything works as it should. Thoroughly investigate RV dealers to find someone reputable and dependable.

Now, it's time to narrow your search; find the best deal for you, and use your recreational time to full advantage. You'll enjoy the travel and the interaction with other toy hauler owners as well.

A Haunted Castle is Waiting For You

Up from Northamptonshire to Tewkesbury the River Avon passes many beauties and impressive landscapes and structures but among all the others, the Warwick Castle stands up gloriously.

To an observer it seems as if these two natural elements constantly complement each other, Avon on beauty and the castle on strength.

Built by William the Conqueror it was supposed to serve as a defense base for the area but fate had another plans for it.

The castle was used as a prison in its lifetime frequently. The most famous prisoner that was held in it was Edward IV king of England along with his wife Margaret of Anjou.

Nowadays most of castles and fortifications seem to be out of their initial purpose and they only act as historic places for attracting curios tourists but The Castle of Warwick has managed to play a more important rule, it has become residence of ghosts.

It is said that the castle has been haunt by Sir Fulke Greville. Fulke, a poet, was very keen on the castle and spent a lot to restore it and for some reasons it turned one of the servant furious, he believe that their master paid a lot more attention to the castle but not enough to him.

In anger stabbed the master and in a short while turned the knife back to himself and committed suicide.

It is said that since then there has been many unexplainable incidents that leaves no option expect believing that the castle is hunted.

The Warwick Castle is enormous. As any fortress is enclosed inside a thick and tall wall with six towers which were used not only for monitoring any suspicious movement around it but also as prisons.

Bear and Clarence towers monitor the main entrance, Guy's and Caesar towers are residential with a dungeon in the basement of Caesar tower.

A full access ticket costs around £22 at the time of writing this article which is quite a reasonable price for such adventure.

With easy access, low admission price and plenty of places to rest and eat the Castle of Warwick invites everybody for once in a life time experience.
