Top 5 Most Popular Safari Activities

1. Game Drive

A game drive safari is by far the most popular way of exploring the African bush. Game viewing is typically conducted early in the morning (6-8:30 AM) and late in the afternoon (4-6:30 PM) when animals are most active. Vehicle types range from open 4 x 4's to minibuses with sunroofs.

2. Night Drive
Night drives are especially great to spot nocturnal animals such as leopard, porcupine, bushbaby, wild cat, African civet or spotted hyena. Also be on the look out for bird species like nightjars and owls that haunt the area.

NB: If you get a chance to use the spotlight, make sure you don't shine the light directly into animal eyes as this may blind them!

3. Walking Safari

Safari walks give you the opportunity to "feel" nature in a totally different fashion than safari activities like game drives. Learn about various aspects of the bush like bird spotting (and the calls they make), tree identification and animal tracking. Walking safaris also give you a chance to approach animals from close distance, although in the majority of cases they will flee as soon as they sense you.

Advice: Try to wear neutral colours (dark colours, e.g. Khaki). Bright colours tend to scare animals away.

4. Boat Cruise

The most relaxing way to enjoy nature! Boat cruises enable you to encounter aquatic species at close range: hippos, crocs, and a variety of bird life (pied kingfisher, fish eagle, goliath heron, etc.). Some safari operators even offer sundowners where you can enjoy refreshing drinks whilst admiring stunning scenery.

Alternatives: Canoeing down the Zambezi River, or exploring the Okavango Delta in a "makoro" (also spelt mokoro/mekoro; traditional dugout canoe; see below).

5. Camping/Sleep Out in the Bush

Camping can be an adventure in itself, especially when your tent is set in the middle of nowhere. The most exciting part of the experience is night time, when wild animals are out and about doing their business. They can be rather "loud", and their midnight "concerts" are entertaining.;) Most common "intruders" include hungry hippos, noisy elephants and sneaky hyenas.

NB: Do not leave any food leftovers (or any personal items for that matter) outside your tent, as you will most likely not find anything left the next morning. Monkeys (vervet monkeys and baboons especially) are regular "thieves" during the day, while hyenas become highly active after sunset.

Other Safari Activities Worth Checking Out

- Elephant back safaris.

- Horseback safaris.

- Balloon safaris.

- Camel back safaris.

- Gorilla safaris.

Amboseli National Park - A Worthy Addition to Your Itinerary

For many people, an African safari needs to be customised in terms of places to visit and where to stay. Most people like to choose where they will be going and to let the tour operator know, rather than the other way around. If this is the case for you whilst searching for a Kenya safari location that has great wildlife and scenery, then look no further, Amboseli should be an essential addition to your itinerary.

Scenery of Amboseli

Amboseli has one of the greatest views than any other wildlife reserve, that of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is due to the fact that the Mountain overlooks the park, and on a clear day can be seen in all of its glory. There is a great variety of terrain which exists in side Amboseli, from its swamps, to its dusty, dry landscape.
Wildlife of Amboseli

Amboseli is an amazing place for spotting animals, there are no wildlife shortage here. Here are some of the creatures you may spot whilst on safari there:

The African 'Big Five' - This consists of the lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard. All of the great beasts can be spotted around the park, but whether you may see them or not is a different story. However, there is one of the big five that you are almost guaranteed to spot, the elephant. This is because the elephant is highly populated in this park, totalling numbers of around 1,600. They can be seen in huge herds, roaming the reserve in search of a watering hole.

Antelope and Ungulate - There are many great species of antelope and ungulate which inhabit this park, such as eland, hartebeest, Grant's & Thompson's gazelle, impala, lesser kudu & dik-dik. These will often be found in medium size groups, and will often get scared and run away if you drive close to them too fast.

Birds - The bird life in Amboseli is mainly centered around its swampy and lake areas. The magnificent, powerful fish eagle can be spotted swooping for prey if you are lucky enough. You can also see great malachite & pied kingfisher, white pelican and grey heron. In the dryer areas you will be able to see the large, fast running Masai ostrich, as well as the unusual looking secretary birds and crowned crane.

Kenya Safaris - Your Expectations

Everyone has their own idea of what a special, holiday of a lifetime should be. Many think of a sunny beach on a paradise island, some think of a mountain hike, and others such as myself love wildlife safaris, and what better place to go on a wildlife safari than Kenya in Africa.

If you are also interest in such a holiday, but have no idea of what to expect, then here are some useful tips on some of the things you can expect to see and do.

Culture
The culture in Kenya is diverse and amazing. The main language spoken as well as English is Swahili. There are still active tribes that live in Kenya, such as the Masai and the Kikuyu. If you are lucky enough whilst on safari, you may receive an invitation to check out a tribal village and be educated on the tribal way of life.

Scenery
Kenya has some of the greatest scenery on this earth in and around it. It has many lakes, such as Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and most famously Lake Victoria - which also borders Tanzania and Uganda. Mount Kenya is one of the largest Mountains in the world and it is also where Kenya received its name. It is not only a beautiful Mountain to see, but also to climb or hike.

Wildlife
Kenya is home to some of the greatest National Parks and Game Reserves in the world, such as the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo West and East. Many of these parks are home to wildlife such as the 'Big Five' (Black Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Masai Lion, Leopard and Elephant), as well as various varieties of Gazelle, Giraffe and two species of Zebra.

Excellent Storm Watching Destination - The Long Beach Peninsula

Storm watching on the coast of Washington is an experience that those who choose to participate will never forget. Over the years, we've had numerous people flock to the the coast to greet Mother Nature as she falls upon the mainland.

After having moved up to the Pacific Northwest from sunny Southern California, it didn't quite make sense to me why anyone would want to come to the beach during a storm. After having experienced many storms since moving here in 1996, I can tell you first hand that it's phenomenal.

The surf gets turned up and the waves at sea are often 25' high. Sustained winds have been over 120mph with gusts of wind topping out at 145mph. The root system on our trees are very shallow, resulting in many trees falling over. The trees often hit the power lines on their way down, bringing the peninsula to it's knees while having to live by candle light for a handful of hours to days.

The locals use the term "hunkering down" in reference to riding out the storm. But the greatest part of all of this is just after the storm has passed. One can find many treasures when going out to the beach to experience beach combing.

There are Japanese glass floats that get brought in from the high sea and if you get out early enough, you may just be one of the lucky ones who finds one of these beauties! The driftwood is piled high along the dunes and many have found great fun in building a "beach cabin" out of the driftwood in the dunes for others to enjoy.

As the manager of a resort on the Long Beach Peninsula, I can recall having a full house during one of these storms. All of us knew what was in store and sure enough, the power went out for 24 hours. The group that stayed with us that weekend couldn't have been a friendlier group. They were all Boy Scout Troop Leaders and had a blast!

So bring your Coleman stove, ice chest, extra blankets, candles and your camera. We've got the cozy room with a great view so you can see first hand when the storm makes her grand entrance. Light a fire in the fireplace, get your candles ready and enjoy something that we locals look forward to each year!

Top 4 Unlikely Places for Vacations

The Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the European countries - these are a few of the most popular areas on Earth where vacationers congregate like ants on sugar. As a result, many travelers are missing out on the equally, if not more, stunning places in other parts of the globe.

Admittedly, security concerns, accommodation issues and transportation problems make these places less popular as tourist spots. But if you want to have a unique, memorable and adventurous vacation, you can go off the beaten track and visit these unlikely places for travel and leisure.

Naturally, we must caution against going to these countries without ample information on what to do, where to go and how to ask for help. Your travel agent and embassy will be of considerable assistance in this matter.

Afghanistan

Yes, you read that right - Afghanistan. We recommend the Band-e-Amir National Park, the country's first ever. Your efforts in getting there will be rewarded with views of five ultra-beautiful lakes, which is a study in peace, solitude and grandeur - a far cry from the conventional images of the country.

As many foreign tourists are becoming aware of its natural beauty, the area is expected to become safer with the local government taking the necessary measure for relative peace and security.

Georgia

We are, of course, talking about the sovereign Eurasian state formerly part of the Soviet Union. Despite the wars that have been wages in the country, it is a beautiful nation with equally beautiful people. One of its foremost attractions is the Shio-Mgvime Monastery, home of the largest monastic congregation in the country since the 6th century.

But it is not just the monastery that attracts an increasing number of visitors to the country. You have the wonders of the Grand and Little Caucasus, beautiful mountain resorts, picturesque historical monuments and the Black Sea's wonderful coastline to visit as well.

Haiti

The country may have suffered from a devastating earthquake especially in and around the capital but the countryside is as beautiful as ever. You can visit Labadie, which is undoubtedly one of the safest places to travel in the country.

You can book a cruise to Labadie. Since the resort community has high walls and security forces patrolling it around the clock, you and your family will be safe. The waters are so clean, the facilities so modern and the staff so nice that you will often forget that you are in one of the world's poorest countries.

Somalia

Yes, the country has been torn apart by civil wars but there are pockets of places away from the capital of Mogadishu, both in terms of geography and of atmosphere. You may think of these places as sane while the rest of the country can be quite mad.

We recommend Bosaso City on the northern part of the country, which just so happens to be a bustling port rapidly growing in importance in the region.

You can enjoy a cosmopolitan experience in the city, thanks to its pristine beaches rivaling the Caribbean, the beautiful Lake Laag and the swinging nightlife venues. You can even have an Amsterdam-like experience with the khat, which is a local amphetamine served in coffee shops.

If you want to get out of your comfort zone in vacations, these places deserve your second glance.

Great Places to Surf on the UK Coast Line

I love surfing but like many British surfers I find it very difficult to know where great places to surf in England are. I've spent the last few years travelling the country finding the best places in the country to get some great waves. I've written the following article to inform you of these places and I hope it helps you have some great fun.

Great places to surf in the South-West

Widemouth Bay- although this beach can be very busy and is popular in the peak seasons it has some great beach break waves in left and right directions.

Treyarnon- this area can be busy dependent on the season but can be great fun and the views are fantastic with great reef break waves.

Hole- has great views and you can often get there without too many tourists and joggers on the beach. I'd definitely go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and get on those reef breaks.

Great places to surf in the South-East

Joss Bay- Can be a tourist beach but is fairly long so pick a part which isn't near the entrance to the car park and you should be fine. This area has great left and right beach breaks and can be great fun.

Great places to go in the East

Gorleston Reef-
As it's a reef area it isn't too busy but watch out for the rocks. Great reef breaks from the left and right and this place is close to some great beach towns.

Scratby- this place is a gem in the sand. Almost always empty so you can have some great fun out there with the beach breaks although it's great that it's empty it isn't the prettiest of beaches.

I hope my article has helped you find some great places out there on the UK coast line.

Biking Down the Capital District in New York

With only 90 miles to cover, this is one of the most scenic biking routes to take. You will be able to explore the road while on your bike. It is a smooth path, with only minimal gravel and the twists and turns that you make while on the road are fun and adventurous.

You will not have a dull moment while riding down the road. There are many canyon carvings that you can view while driving. One stoplight along the way, but the rest of the way is smooth driving with minimal cops.

Rolling hills and long straight-a-ways allow you to have a relaxing ride. This area is relatively close to Lake Placid if you are interested in visiting the town. There are excellent hiking trails as well as a museum devoted to the Olympics. The town is also covered with local artisan shops carrying handmade specialty items.

The scenery along the way is also great for viewing pleasure, although it is wise to stay off the interstate because it is less scenic and adds a little more time to the trip.

Depending on your preference of riding, this might be the path to take. The beautiful landscapes, and rolling hills of 6W will relax you and allows you to spend time while riding across the hills taking in the colors, fresh air, and winding roads.

It is 90 miles away from the capital, Albany allowing you to take in all the splendors and amenities of New York before visiting the glorious capital. You should be able to make it there on one tank of gas with no problem allowing it to be a small budget trip.

There are several small towns along the way have gas stations to get snacks, or take a break from riding on the road. Newburgh is a larger city on the way with fine dining and lodging options if you choose to stay the night.

This is great if you are riding from a farther off town instead of starting as close. When you get to OCC, you will be able to shop in the Mecca store for those of you who are Mecca fans. The bikes are built to put on display for others to see. There are car and bike shows that are hosted often on weekends which give you an added bonus when driving through.

This is one of the best courses to take while driving through NY since it is scenic, and has a lot of places to stop along the way. It is highly rated, and you will be glad you did when you take on the smooth roads of the mountains.

Your Dream Holiday in the Caribbean

Barbados is an island country in the Caribbean area and a group of isles in the Atlantic. Thus, Barbados enjoys a sunny climate which invites travelers throughout the year.

The area boasts of its extraordinary culture as well as its stunning resorts to vacationers, and there are actually Barbados villas which offer appropriate space to stay for all tourists. The villas are better suited for vacationers than standard hotel rooms are simply because they offer more privacy.

A holiday in the Caribbean is a dream holiday, a dream vacation only few can fulfill. This place offers a paradise to everyone who visits. Caribbean resorts offer rich culture, fine delicacies, and tropical climate which vacationers love. Villas and townhouses are installed within the islands.

Barbados is one of the smallest islands in the Caribbean seas but certainly not the least in terms of beautiful resorts and luxury villas. Barbados offers serene beauty and breathtaking scenery. Anyone who has been in Barbados can tell about the sheer beauty of this place.

There is no need to worry about a place to stay if you are planning to spend a week or so in this beautiful island because there are vacation houses. Accommodations can vary depending on your budget. If you want to check out vacation spots, you only need to contact villa owners or property owners in Barbados. This isn't much of a task because you can actually see them online.

There are different beautiful, scenic spots in the world and Barbados is one of the top tourist destinations because of its Caribbean feel and its warm climate. This island paradise gives a peaceful, soothing getaway for travelers and visitors.

Wherever they are in the islands, the refreshing shores are just a drive away. Countless villas are scattered across this small country, and each of them offer different amenities, so you can choose from any of them depending on your needs and your budget.

You can choose over hotel accommodations and even inexpensive cabins and lodges. Or you can bask in opulence and check in to some of the most luxurious private townhouses and villas, which will make you feel as if you were just home.

There are obvious advantages of staying at private villas over staying at hotels when you are planning to leave for Barbados. The best thing about staying at secluded villas is that you have greater privacy primarily because you don't share the location with any other people.

The next villa could be hundreds of meters away. Villas also make you feel as though you are at home, and this is a feel you may never achieve when staying at hotels. You can drive your car into the garage and leave anytime you want.

You won't enter any elevators or look out the window to see skyscrapers. Villas give an experience as close to an experience you get at home. In other words, you feel as though you're just home enjoying your tea or watching your favorite television show.

But these townhouses are situated in idyllic, scenic places where you can enjoy the ocean breeze and even take a walk or drive to the nearest market to see the way of living of the citizens.

To give a feel of home, Barbados villas are usually complete with all the convenience features and furnishings. You can watch television or movie, listen to your music, cook food, and even launder your clothes. Many villas have phones and internet service.

All have air conditioning systems to provide cool indoor environment despite the outdoor heat during sunny weather. Swimming pools are a usual feature although not all vacation homes have them.

You can see amenities of different villas and townhouses on the internet, as different developers and property owners advertise them over the internet.

Check out accommodations online and find out if someone can assist you on your trip from the airport to the townhouse or villa. It would be more convenient if airport pick-up service is offered.

Or you can check out car rental service so you can freely tour around the island and see spots and resorts. Villa owners may also offer laundry services and housekeeping to make your stay more expedient.

Bhutan For Family Adventurers

Simply the mention of the word Bhutan, and it conjures up visions of a remote and exotic destination with a spectacular landscape and a rich, magical history. Bhutan is all of this and more but, perhaps surprisingly to some, it is also an accessible and welcoming place to visit.

Although tourism numbers are limited in order to preserve both the cultural and physical integrity of Bhutan, treks through this fascinating country will open your eyes to an authentic land, unspoilt by modern western ideals.

Because of its unique heritage and legendary hospitality, Bhutan makes an ideal destination for a family holiday. Whilst not advisable to take younger children on some of the more challenging Bhutan treks, there is no reason why the whole family can not be included on this once in a lifetime adventure.

Read All About It
If your children do not, as yet, share your enthusiasm for experiencing Bhutan treks, try getting them involved by reading up on some of the more exciting myths and stories of the country; the Bhutanese are wonderful storytellers and the thought of travelling to a country which is so steeped in legend could not help but pique the interest of a youngster.

The delightful book by Freda Ferne, Bhutan, Land of the Thunder Dragon, claims to be the only book published on Bhutan specifically for children. Whether or not the claim is true, it is a wonderful depiction of the country's geography, history and culture - all in an easy-to-understand format aimed at kids.

Inside, Outside
While for some children the idea of camping out under the stars in a far off land sounds like heaven, there are bound to be those more timid young ones who may be a little less enthusiastic and prefer something more like home. The ideal family holiday should include a little of both.

While on gentle, family-friendly Bhutan treks, camping can be made into a magical experience for the children, through the enthusiasm, professionalism and sense of fun of the local guides. When staying in the larger centres such as Paro and Thimphu, you can choose to stay in wonderful character accommodation or more luxurious hotels.
Fun for all Ages
Bhutan treks are appropriate for most age groups and make ideal family adventures. Each trek will naturally have a recommended minimum age, and will be carefully designed around the requirements of the younger travellers. Tours can even have a bespoke aspect so that they are tailor-made to suit the requirements of your family.

Festival Fun Time
Bhutan is an ideal destination for children when it comes to festival time. There are so many of these colourful celebrations throughout the year that it is a fairly easy task to coincide your Bhutan treks to attend a festival.

While the main purpose of these festivals is to ward off evil and invite good fortune into the lives of the Bhutanese - through a child's eyes, the festivals are just great fun. The colour, lively music, meddlesome clowns and amazing masked dancers combine to make these festivals the highlight of any visit to Bhutan.

Your Guide to the Cities of Mexico

Sometimes when you're trying to organise a trip, it can be difficult to chose which city to visit. Here's a quick guide to help you get the very best out of a trip to Mexico.

City guides

San Cristobal De Las Casas

A favourite among travellers, a hideout for Zapatista rebels, or just a beautiful setting to learn Spanish, San Cristobal is an unmissable stop on anyone's trip to southern Mexico. Set in the Highlands of Chiapas at an altitude of 2100m and ringed by forested hills, it provides a refreshing change of climate if you've just come from the steaming jungles of Palenque.

With picturesque cobbled streets, revolutionary-inspired bars and art shops, and colourful markets, a traveller could comfortably spend a few days exploring.

Ideally you need at least three days to enjoy the city, with one day exploring the shops, market and bars. On the second day take a guided trip to a local Chamula village, these are easily arranged at one of the local tour agencies and worth the small cost.

On the third day take a transfer to the Sumidero Canyon for a speedboat ride through the crocodile infested waters. Keep an eye out for circling vultures and a camera out for those spectacularly steep canyon walls. You can build your own trip to include all these stopovers.

Playa del Carmen

A bustling town an hour south of Cancun, that serves as the starting point for many tours of the Yucatan peninsula. With white sands, a wide range of good quality restaurants and tacky tourist outlets, it draws visitors from all over the globe.

While it benefits from being less-resort focussed than Cancun, Playa still has its fair share of all-inclusive options. While many of these have their own stretch of beach, they are often a fair distance from Quinta Avenida where all the fun happens.

Two full days is enough to enjoy Playa without tourist overload, with one day just relaxing on the beach and the second you could take one of several possible day trips.

The standard option would be to take a coach tour to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, but expect crowds and bring plenty of sun cream. You could also visit the snorkelers paradise of Xel-Ha or take a boat trip over the island of Cozumel.

The main purpose behind the establishment of 97 sq km national park is to protect endangered Nilgiri Tahr from extinction.

Top Travel Gadgets For the Thrifty Traveller

If you ever saw the high-tech African safari movie Congo, you probably know where the state-of-the-art in travel gadgetry is - tent air-conditioners, laser detectors to catch animals roaming too close, and so on. There is another way to go about traveling too, and that involves roughing it.

You set forth into the wild with nothing more than a couple of sticks to rub together to make a fire, and maybe a tube of mosquito repellent. But for now, for the rest of us, let's go the other way - with travel gadgets that cost no more than $50, ones that we'd really need if we weren't Crocodile Dundee.

You can find travel gadgets at your regular travel store that range from your ubiquitous iPods tricked out with noise canceling headphones, to Olympus' Tough range of indestructible digital cameras and wearable GPS trackers.

The thing is, these gadgets need a certain amount of babysitting - they are heavy, you need to carry them around, and you need worry about how to power them. And of course, these are expensive to buy, and easy to drop (not that it would matter to those Tough cameras).

What we're talking about here is stuff for the frugal traveler - one who doesn't have a tribal carrying his rucksack behind him, one who needs to do everything himself. For those self-reliant travelers, here are the top travel gadgets you'll need, ones you won't need to break the bank for.

Let's start out with what it takes to pack for a trip. You have your standard 22-inch carry-on piece of luggage, and you have a week's worth of clothes to pack into it. How do you do it? By using Travel Space Bags, of course. What these bags do at about three dollars a pop is, they let you suck all the spare air out of your clothes bags so you can fit more in less space.

Now that you know what to pack your stuff into, let's go into what you can pack. Most travel gadgets happen to be electronic, or happen to be very clever. Here's one that's neither, but is still extremely useful. It's an all-in-one tool, a Swiss Army knife.

When you're out there on the Himalayan foothills, and you ride sputters out, you'll probably kill for one of these. Look at the Leatherman series for some great action when you need it.

Some of the models come with pliers to help you strip electrical insulation off, a screwdriver to help you fix the handle of a broken suitcase, a pointy point to help you press a Reset button, and so on. The best part is, they'll cost you no more than $50 at Amazon, if you go for the top-end stuff.

When you travel anywhere, in the Third World or the First, you simply need to carry a bunch of cash that needs to last you your whole trip; but what about when the pickpockets strike? You don't want to be marooned in the middle of nowhere with no way to pay for your next drink, do you?

Get a money clip; I'm sure there are thieves who know how to outwit this one, but I've never personally had a robbery ever since I switched to one of these. If you buy one of those newfangled ones with a built-in flash drive, you'd have a little extra preparation on your hands as well.

And while you're securing things, why not get a nice cable lock to lock your suitcase somewhere, or anything else. The Kryptonite R4 is a great choice, because it gives you not just your standard cable lock with a 3 foot extension cable, it also gives you a flashlight all built into the body. After all this, you'll spend no more than $20.

Now you need to babysit the few pieces of equipment you do have - phone, camera and so on. Simply buy yourself an adapter that will allow you to plug your stuff into a foreign receptacle; but how many of these can you carry? Grab a mini power strip that also supplies power out a couple of USB ports.

Belkin has a great range here. You'll need a little folding tripod like the one from GorillaPod too. They make it so that you can balance your camera just about on any surface, even on a tree.

And of course, let's not forget that you need some babysitting yourself; grab one of the several medical kits they have on the market - like the Adventure Medical Kit with a bunch of perfectly cute ready-made first-aid stuff. So there you go, all things you need, to keep you safe, and to keep you going.

Belize Cave Tubing - Mystery, Beauty, and Excitement

What could be more exciting than Belize cave tubing? It just sounds mysterious and fun. Along with a Belize cave tubing tour during the day, there are overnight trips as well. All tours are full day unless specifically noted beforehand.

Since the start, cave tubing in Belize has become one of the country's most popular tourist adventure excursions. But plan to do it during the rainy season (August through January) when water levels are high.

You may be wondering what Belize cave tubing is. It involves you being seated in the middle of a tube. That's right. Your floating down the river on an inner tube. You are going through caves with others in the comfort of your own inner tube.

Talk about exciting. When it comes to things to do in Belize as far as cave tubing is concerned you have so many interesting sights to see. Expect some underground and jungle hiking as part of the package.

This will be contingent on the high water levels of the rainy season. If you arrive during the dry season, there are plenty of expedition tours available that you may want to look

Belize cave tubing has got to be at the head of everyone's vacation list. As you follow the rivers into the subterranean caves, it's just you, your inner tube, and headlamp, which you will be required to wear in order to light the way.

Stalagmites sticking out of the water and stalactites hover from above. Chambers, terraces, and altars stand in silence on the banks. You will be glad you chose this particular tour. There are tours for various age groups and stamina (couples, kids, and families are welcome).

Certain tours will require fitness and agility. But be assured there is a Belize cave tubing tour that is just right for everyone.

In addition to tubing, consider adding a zip line adventure. It is mostly for those who want to stay dry. This is a fast-paced experience that will have you rushing over the treetops of the rain forest.

Stay alert - you may hear the barking of a howler monkey or see a flock of parrots. There's absolutely no better way to experience the lush flora and fauna of Belize's rainforest. There's adventure for everyone in Belize, and plenty of opportunities to make a lifetime of memories.

Morocco Itinerary Ideas

Morocco is a fantastic place to visit, whether you have just 3 nights or 3 weeks.

Short break

If you only have a few nights to spare then take a trip to Marrakech. Marrakesh is the perfect place to go on a short-break, only 3 hours from London yet a time-warp away. Step off the plane and back in time to a medieval city of bustling souks, snake charmers, story-tellers all enveloped in the smell of incense and spices.

If you would like to fully immerse yourself in Moroccan culture then a stay in a traditional Marrakesh Riad within the medina is best as they offer an unexpected tranquility. Or else stay just outside the medina walls in a more rural location in a boutique villa or hotel or even a luxurious 'posh' tent.

One week to 10 days

A week to ten days is a perfect length of time to visit Morocco and allows you to experience a greater variety of Moroccan life. I would recommend a one week Morocco trip that combines the unmissable Marrakech with a trip into the Sahara desert (staying overnight and watching the sunrise in the morning is one of the best sights in the world!) and finishing your trip with a trip to the coast in Essaouira or Agadir.

Two weeks and more

You have got two weeks, why not do it all? This length of time is great as you can experience the diversity of Moroccan life and landscapes. Rich culture and history, vibrant city life, mountain treks, camel rides in the Sahara and lazing by the coast are all possible when doing a two week trip Morocco trip or spend three weeks in Morocco for a really comprehensive experience.

There are all kinds of Morocco itineraries out there, and Morocco is such a fantastic that you're bound to have a great time, whatever you do.

Great White Shark Cage Diving

Great White Shark cage diving is an amazing adrenaline rush! I have been to Gaansbai South Africa to go cage diving to see the Great Whites and it was incredible.

Our Cage

Our cage was about 5 feet in diameter and 7 foot tall with large buoys at the top to help keep it afloat. There was a large hole around the circumference of the cage of about a foot that was between 5 and six foot up so the divers could see out and take pictures. It was made with reinforced re-bar and chicken wire. Yes, chicken wire!

We had to ask ourselves as we climbed into this contraption whether this was the smartest thing to do, but the thrill of the adventure far outweighed our concern for our safety.

We needn't worry. We were working with a very experienced and professional crew. They did everything to make our trip special and safe.

The cage was secured to the side of the boat and this proximity to the boat's safe haven made us feel better. We only got into the cage when our chumming from the boat brought a great white around (and she stayed for awhile).

View from a Cage

Our time in the cage was the memory of a lifetime. We got into the cage in twos. When it was our turn, I shared the cage with my friend Ron.

For the first few minutes we got our bearings. The water was a little misty. Mike the leader of the expedition noted that there had been one a huge storm in the area recently.

After a few minutes in the cage we saw a sleek and powerful Great White came out of the mist. She was about fourteen feet long and absolutely beautiful! We observed her as she gracefully swam almost effortlessly though the ocean waters.

Ron was shooting video as I prepared my Nikonos III underwater camera for some great shots.

The Great White turned toward our cage and came right at us! As I prepared my camera I felt like a young boy on Christmas morning patiently waiting to open his gifts. In my case I was waiting for the perfect time to shoot a couple of amazing pictures.

The Nikonos III had to be hand wound to get to the next picture so I knew the best I would do was to take two pictures if she came in for a close-up.

After swimming gracefully about, the Great White turned and headed directly towards the cage! This was it. I prepared my camera and myself for the pictures. Wait, wait, not just yet...

Now! I shot the first picture, wound the camera as fast as possible and took the second shot. I had taken both pictures successfully and was full of life and excitement.

All of a sudden something happened and I fell over scrambling to get back up. The shark had bumped into the cage. I was so focused on getting the pictures; I was literally knocked off my feet.
Wow, what a rush!

About 5 months after the trip I asked my friend Ron why I had fell over. He noted that the Great White Shark had bumped the cage head on, which knocked me over.

The intensity of the moment forced my focus on taking pictures of the shark, and nothing else. After Ron told me of the events, I recalled the whole thing.
Incredible!

If you are an adventurer, Great White Shark Cage Diving is something worth considering!

Adventurous Diving

Abalone diving is one of the popular water sports and today it is considered as one of the most dangerous water sports. It is a water sport that is highly thrilling and exciting. This kind of diving is not done for fun but for the sake of finding a type of sea creature called abalone.

Abalone are edible sea snails that are available in deep waters of seas or oceans which makes hunting for the same by the divers most dangerous. Majority of them is found in cold waters along the coastal line of all the countries except for few.

Abalone diving is allowed only from April to November and a diver is allowed to take only three per day and a total number of 24 per year. Law allows taking only red ones and bans taking of black, pink, white and flat ones. It is illegal to sell sport obtained Abalone.

An diver is generally well equipped when going for a sport which is highly adventurous in nature and involves great risk. An equipment used by the diver are thick wet suit which includes a hood, gloves, mask and booties.

Before you set out for diving, there are few important things that are to be considered like where to dive, when to dive and what equipment is required for abalone diving.

Tasmania of Australia provides 25% of yearly world abalone harvest. Scuba diving for abalone is allowed in Tasmania and the number of abalone that can be taken in is restricted to 10 per day. Generally black lip and green lip abalone are fished in this place for recreational purposes.

Bali Holiday Travel and Accommodation

Here is a short bit of information on Bali holiday adventures. Me and the family has been to Bali 4 times in the last three years and have always had the most exiting time in Bali. We have had some great experiences including some not so pleasing one's also.

One i can think of was when we visited the Bali safari park when my wife, son who was then 3 and my daughter who was 2 were having a photo taken with an orangutan which after were going to view the pictures taken when my little son slipped down the step and tumbled fore head first in to a post his face was absolutely covered in blood, the guide as me if he could pick him up and run to the first aid room with him.

So i raced of following the worker of the Bali Safari park with my son and had his head all cleaned up and bandaged. I must say the staff did a great job of trying to look after my son.

We generally stay at the beach resorts which are always friendly and family orientated. The Jayakarta is a favorite as we have now stayed there on two visits to Bali and are planning to stay there for our next trip in 2011.

Bali beach accommodation seems to be the preferred selection in my view as this is where i prefer to stay when visiting Bali. There is always friendly people everywhere you look, we have met some of the greatest people who we now call friends and keep in regular contact with.

There is so much Bali holiday accommodation available to choose from. Bali hotels and villas seem to be the most popular by far.

The Bali beach hotels seem to do a roaring trade and are also one of my favorites. When looking for bali holiday accommodation there are a number of factors you should be thinking of :

1. What are you looking to be doing on your holiday? are you looking to be staying in the resort or hotel quite a bit maybe lazing around the pool.

2. Do you like the fast living or do you just intend on taking it easy? There are numerous activities you can be doing in Bali, Surfing, Diving, Doing the slides at Water Bom Park, Visiting Ubud and the monkey forest or mabee having lunch at the volcano whatever the holiday you are on you can find a world of tours and activities.

I also love the beach and sitting down at one of the beach bars in the afternoon for a few quiet ones while the wife gets a pedicure and does a little bargaining and the kids are playing in the sand. You always end up in a group talking about your travels while we all are watching the sun go down.

If you like shopping then there is plenty of supermarket and shopping centres and you won't be able to miss the thousands of stalls selling products, clothing, ornaments and plenty more. I hope to fill you in on the next post.
So next time you are looking t

The African Khanga

The African Kanga is a garment usually worn around the waist. It's has been around for many centuries and it's highly exalted by most African communities. In Kenya it's the choice of the Coastal region.

It comes in range of different colors. It symbolizes different occasions and especially in Africa it shows how deeply rooted our culture is. It's used during weddings, dancing competitions or for daily duties around the house.

The African Kanga is loved very much by tourists. In the coastal region it sells a lot like hot cake as tourist prefer to wrap it around their waist as they head to the beach. The most stunning thing about it is that it has very inspiring words written at the bottom.

It's either advising or cautioning about something, though this is in local dialect - Kiswahili. Since now the world has become global its being sold all over and people are embracing it and soon it might catch up like fever forcing everybody to have one.

The African Kanga has evolved to take up very many roles. In Nigeria it's the choice of many women who use it as headgear. It's also used as a shawl for babies. It's not a big surprise to see that the Kenya National dress has borrowed so much from it.

If you have time you can tailor make one for yourself to serve as a memorabilia of Africa culture. One can also buy several of them to give out to his friends as gifts. This is very common in African communities especially women.

The Franz Joseph Glacier

In New Zealand, walking can be more of an adventure than people ever imagine. And there's nowhere better to put your adventurous spirit to the test than by deciding to explore the Franz Joseph Glacier. A remnant from the Ice Age, the glacier is 12 km long - though your walks don't have to be, in order to see some of the stunning vistas on offer.

Are you an explorer?

The drive to explore glacial or arctic landscapes has been with us since James Cook crossed the Antarctic Circle in 1773 - and long before that. It's all about looking for new sights to see and new places to experience, as well as the excitement of learning to navigate a challenging environment.

But the real value to travellers worldwide has always been in visiting distant places and searching for the self, exploring our own joy in life and our achievements by exploring the world around us, whether in arctic glaciers, or those of New Zealand.

Walking, climbing, even caving in the tunnels formed beneath the ice - the Franz Joseph glacier attracts around a quarter of a million visitors each year, all hoping for an adventure that will bring them closer to themselves.

History...

Located in Westland National Park on the west coast of the South Island, the glacier has a long history. First mentioned in a diary from the steam ship Mary Louisa in 1859 over a hundred and fifty years ago, it was named after the emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph the First, by German explorer Julius von Haast in 1865.

... and Mythology

Aside from names and dates, the glacier is rich in myths and legends, notably from the famous Maori tribe of New Zealand. Walking along (or through) the glacier, it's hard not to be inspired by the mythic landscape. The Maori named the glacier 'Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere', or 'The Tears of Hinehukatere'.

Local legend tells how the enthusiastic mountain climber Hinehukatere persuaded her lover, Wawe, to go climbing with her. Unluckily, for Wawe, an avalanche struck, and swept him away. Broken-hearted Hinehukatere's tears flowed down the mountain, and froze to form the famous glacier.

Setting up camp

Luckily, climbing equipment such as ice axes and crampons that can latch onto a climbing boot have made exploring a lot safer than in the days of legends - in New Zealand, walking across the glacier is also made easier with the option of guided walks by professionals.

It's reassuring to know there's a community nearby, the Franz Josef township, providing accommodation, a heliport, and a number of restaurants and shops to unwind after a day's explorations.

Five kilometres from the glacier's face (and with Westland National Park just 20 minutes away if you need a break from the glacier), there's a chance to relax and 'set camp' during your journeys.

There and back

If you're looking for an adventure, chances are you're looking for one that will stay with you long after you've left the ice. A journey to New Zealand, walking in the footsteps of famous travellers and discovering the sights is a great experience - but better is the knowledge that after you return home, you might have discovered a little more about your own explorer's spirit.

Salmon Fishing in Alaska

Many of us try to think about how we can create trips that include things that we love. If you love to indulge in activities like salmon fishing than Alaska is where you should go. There are many different types of salmons that are native to Alaska that you can hunt and they usually come in distinctive types.

Salmon fishing in the Alaska is great if you plan to go for the silver salmon. Their size is much smaller if you compare it with the Chinook. Usually the silver salmon weighs around 7 to 11 pounds. This variety of salmon there is large numbers in the months of July and November.

When you talk of taste, sockeye salmon will be the front-runner, though it is much smaller among its class. It still is loved by many fish lovers due to its great taste. The common goal of the fishermen is the king salmon or the Chinook. Its size is between 21 to 35 pounds. This fish is also known as king's quinnat, tyee, springs and the tule.

The equipment plays a great role if you intend to experience the salmon fishing in the Alaska. If you are new to this activity then you can seek the assistance of a fishing guide for helping you in the preparation of the equipment. You can also hire the services of the Alaska fishing charters.

Talking of the "excitement factor", there are lots of stuffs which can assist you in recreating the fun. First you need to have some layered clothes which can help you in combating the cold climate.

Secondly you must also arrange for the water-resistant clothes to have a hassle free fun during the fishing sessions as they can prevent you from getting too wet. Lastly, you must secure the fishing guide as it is crucial for the novices.

You must remember that salmon fishing is best enjoyed if you go prepared. You must also be aware of safety precautions to be taken during the activity. Apart from the fishing activity, you can quietly relax in the calm surrounding with all the amenities there in place offered by the lodges and fishing resorts.

If you intend to make your stay exciting and memorable, you must not deprive yourself of doing all those things which you have not tried earlier, for example if last time you went for salmon, why not go and try the halibut this time!

Continuously challenging yourself with something extraordinarily will surely make your trip more fun filled and exciting.

A Holiday in Portugal With Adventure

The history of Portugal and its great range of cultural influences are as diverse as the country's natural environment. At one time Portugal commanded an expansive empire with colonies in Africa, China, the Americas and Malaysia.

Likewise Portugal has been settled by a range of different cultures, including the Romans and Moors. This combination of empire building and occupation has created a stylish and progressive country with influences from a variety of cultures.

Inland, Portugal can be divided into two geographical regions separated by the stunning Montanhas and the Serra da Estrela, a clear distinction between the Atlantic North and the Mediterranean south.

Cycle your way around Portugal to see the real country. Inland from the popular Algarve coast, the quieter more relaxed interior makes for ideal cycling territory.

There are tours available, or you can hire a bicycle and go off by yourself. When and where you like, whether on or off road, as fast paced or laid back as you like, there is wealth of sights to see and things to do when you explore inland Algarve by bicycle.

A break in Portugal will always be remembered for the welcome you'll get from the locals and the charm of a culture that celebrates all kinds of festivals. A surfing holiday in Portugal can provide the thrills of the waves by day and a chance to enjoy top class accommodation and fine restaurants in the evening.

With the Atlantic providing some perfect conditions, the warm waters off Portugal are renowned across the world for having some great beach breaks, with a range of national and local surf contests held along the coast. The surfing culture here has a unique feel not experienced elsewhere, and with some of the best undeveloped and quiet beaches in Europe the lack of crowds can sometimes seem unbelievable.

Portugal also enjoys some great Atlantic winds, which make the waters ideal for different sailing sports, with kitesurfing and windsurfing being very popular. Harnessing the power of the wind and skirting across the coast in a warm breeze is virtually guaranteed at any time of the year in Portugal, and for spectators the sights can be colourful and inspiring.

The water is not the only place where adventure can be found in the Algarve. The national parks of Portugal offer a wealth of opportunities for those in search of holiday activities. Everything from rock climbing to nature walking can be enjoyed in various landscapes. Lakes, rivers, and mountains offer a diverse choice for exploring, and camping.

It is possible to enjoy almost any type of adventure sport in Portugal, from snorkelling to rock climbing. It seems like the entire country is one outdoor playground, with plenty of quality places to stay.

Villas in Portugal are often geared up for the adventurous visitor, with the freedom and fun of self catering meaning you can eat out or eat in as you please, and base to yourself as near to the action as possible.

Whether you go on your own, with family or friends, or as part of an adventure tour, Portugal has something for everyone to enjoy, from the adrenalin of sea sports, to mountain sports and walking in the rolling countryside.

Safety Tips For Adventure Trips in Chile

If you're looking for a place where your thirst for adventure and extreme types of sports can be satisfied, look no further than Chile where contrasting terrains and climates combined with breathtaking natural wonders make it a veritable paradise for active tourists.

Here you can do all sorts of outdoor activities - from paragliding, scuba diving, surfing, mountain climbing, kayak and white-water rafting, skiing, horseback riding, and motorcycling to the "tamer" activities such as golf, fishing, bird watching, trekking or cruising and yachting.

Before you go and head out to the slopes or hit the waters, consider the following safety information for some of the active pursuits you can do in Chile.

Kayak and White-Water Rafting. The rivers in Patagonia are known worldwide for their excellent rapids and experts travel here to hold international competitions or practice. Before booking a paddling journey, make sure that you have the right equipment (a neoprene suit, a double spade row, a lifesaver jacket and a helmet).

Some tour operators may provide them or you may be able to rent them for a fee. Never go down a river alone or without at least a guide who knows the place and can navigate the tricky parts.

Motorcycling. Whilst it may be thrilling to ride though the countryside, it isn't all smooth and paved roads and it is easy to get lost especially in the mountainous regions. Sign up for an organized motorcycle journey in advance so that you can be with a group and you don't waste time figuring out directions.

Paragliding. From the north in Antofagasta or Alto Molle to the south in Cucao, Pucon and San Ignacio, tourists can try their hand in this exciting sport of throwing themselves in the air and gliding over amazing landscapes below.

Whilst you don't need some serious practical knowledge before doing this, it is wise to have the proper equipment and gear (a paraglide, helmet, harness, radio and emergency parachute). Pay attention to the instructor who should be able to give essential information about wind currents and where you can land safely.

Biking. One of the most popular Chile tours, mountain biking has caught wildly around Chile and with good reason. With winding roads and spectacular views, this is one good way to enjoy nature at its best. Before picking a bike route, make sure to study the maps and information that are easily available in bicycle rental shops.

When biking on main roads, stay alert for traffic because Chileans are not known for giving road courtesy to cyclists. If you're considering a bike-and-trekking trip, check the weather before heading out - some strong gales can make biking difficult.

Selecting Kayak Packages

Kayaks and kayak accessories are actually available in a huge number of styles. There are the sit on top types, the sit inside types, the fishing kayaks, the surfing kayaks and even the inflatable kayaks.

Someone who wants to begin enjoying this as a hobby will need to get themselves the kayak, paddles, and even a life jacket too. There might also be the need for a car rack, specialized gloves, and a variety of seats, bags, and even a helmet.

Fortunately, the better vendors make high-quality kayak package available. These are a great way for the novice or experienced kayaker to get a good price on their boat and the necessary equipment. Because there are so many ways that people can engage in kayaking, the number of good packages is quite extensive too.

Someone with a limited budget could easily get a top of the line inflatable that comes pre-packaged with a durable foot pump and the properly sized paddle. This would allow them to teach themselves how to enjoy kayaking without the need to invest in racks and specialty gear.

If, however, someone was well-advanced in their abilities, they could get a high performance kayak with a fiberglass paddle, gear bags, and more. This too would save them money, however, because a purchase of this kind allows the vendor to distribute their inventory quickly and as cost effectively as possible.

Before jumping into a package purchase, however, it is a good idea to really shop around. For instance, the inflatable kayaks are a wonderful way to learn how to enjoy this unique sport, but if someone knows that they are going to be very serious about their level of activity, they do need Justify Fullto compare the rigid hull types against the inflatable options.

These two varieties do tend to be priced with a few hundred dollars difference between them, but if someone finds that they need to upgrade to the rigid type within only a years' time, they will be out a considerable sum of money.

Because of this it is always a wise and savvy idea to identify a supplier who extends some sort of low price guarantee. They should also give the best possible pricing on their shipping too.

Remember, kayaks are lightweight boats, but they are not inexpensive to ship, and this means that working with a group that makes it as affordable as possible to acquire the kayak is always to the financial advantage of the buyer.

Do You Want to See Antarctica by Air Or Sea?

Try to imagine a continent which has a size which is twice that of Australia. This place is not only huge it is the highest as well as driest of all the continents on this earth. The distance from the south side of Australia to Antarctica is about 10,000 km and the scenic tour involving flying can cost you anything between $1500 to above $6500, usually depending upon the seating arrangement desired.

Wow, it is a beautiful place! Antarctica is really amazing! You can purchase scenic flights to vast continents which consist of the coldest places on this earth. Temperatures around -90 deg have been recorded in the Antarctica.

While in flight you can listen to various experts who have immense knowledge about the glaciers, terrain, wildlife, and the mountains there.

For all those who are interested in seeing the Antarctica in much closer detail you may take a cruise through the sea. That way you may hopefully see a few forms of wildlife, and maybe even some scientific research bases. What visitors would not be able to see is plant life and any land animals, although tourist may spot whales, migratory birds, and sweet penguins!

Sea going tourists should take adequate precautions against the extreme weather conditions prevalent there. The extremely low temperatures can lead you to hypothermia. Most of us are aware of various methods for protecting ourselves from the hot and sunny weather by using the sunscreens, wearing sunglasses, etc and this same holds true for Antarctica as well.

Skiers can tell you that ice and snow glare has a potential to damage your eyes. You must also never forget sea sickness tablets. There is no fun in losing those golden days lying ill.

So when the time comes to choose the mode of transport to reach Antarctica, I really have no answer. It all depends upon how much you are prepared to pay for the trip. it depends on whether you want to sail on the specially made ships in rough seas, or prefer planes like the Airbus or Qantas 747 that allows you a chance to see more of Antarctica but in lesser detail.

Ships usually sail from many South American ports, though there are many departure locations which are used at other times. These cruises usually take 2 to 3 weeks though some ships may take less time. When you sail, you will surely get more of a chance to see the "bottom of the world."

Oahu - Travel in Hawaii

Oahu is the most developed island in the Hawaiian chain of islands. It is the third largest island and highly populated. From a very long time Oahu is known as "The Gathering Place". It is considered as a "centre" of all the Hawaiian Islands, all activities being centered at Oahu. Here visitors can get all that they want. Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii is in Ohua.

Oahu is a very popular tourist destination, not only because it has excellent panorama but also because it is comparatively cheaper and hence affordable by all. Tourists can avail the island-wide bus service instead of the costly rented cars. There is also a wide range of hotels available there.

Oahu is famous for its beaches and its wild seawater. The water crashes with such force that it produces huge sea waves that rise high in the sky giving a splendid show of nature. The Waikiki beach in Oahu is a one of the best beaches in the world and is a must-visit for tourists.

The Diamond Head Crater is also a must-see if you come to Oahu. Hanauma Bay is best suited for snorkeling and Kailua beach for windsurfing.

The landscape of this island is a view to behold. Mountains rise from the coast to a height of almost 2000 ft. Colorful flowers adorn these mountains and let out a sweet fragrance that soothes the mind. Waterfalls sparkle in the sunlight while the dense tropical forests provide ample opportunities for trekking.

Oahu is a paradise for hikers. There is no better way to taste the wilderness of the island than by hiking. Either you hike individually or by booking a tour with any of the hiking companies in the island. One should also have a look at the ancient temples of the Hawaiian culture; this would give one an idea of the Hawaiian history.

For surfing one should head to the North Shore, more specifically the town of Haleiwa. It is a very funky town filled with colorful surf shops, art galleries, food joints serving Hawaiian delicacies etc.

The surfing season is during the winter when North Shore becomes the hub of all surfers. One can also go for an underwater tour in a submarine to experience the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean rich with marine life and beautiful corals.

The list of offerings that Oahu has for visitors is never-ending. It is undoubtedly one of the best places to "gather" at.

Thailand Martial Arts and Outdoor Adventure Travel - Long-Term Travel in Thailand on a Budget

1. Amazing Adventures in Thailand

A few years ago, I decided to migrate the majority of my efforts, lifestyle and long-term ninja training programs to Thailand. This decision was based on number of pros as compared to our original California program. First, I like change and I like to stretch what we can offer to students. I have run programs in Europe, the United States and now Asia equally.

Does it mean that California or the United States does not have a lot to offer? No, it just means there are other options and I have a lot of pros to talk about for the Adventurer that can financially manage a long term trip to the U.S. or Europe.

Thailand has a lot to offer serious students and adventurers. Especially those participating in our long-term Martial Arts Training camps.

There is a popular commercial in Thailand called - Amazing Thailand. It highlights the plethora of adventure and fun that is available in one small location.

In Bangkok for example, you can spend time shopping in a 7 story mall (even purchase Ferrari in one of the stores), visit historical temples (feel like a king in the Grand Palace or say hello to the emerald Buddha), or perhaps enjoy an endless variety of nightlife (have a drink on top of the world overlooking the city).

Bangkok is an internationally known pit-stop and great for students to spend some time adjusting to the Asia before heading out to see what else Thailand has to offer.

For me, the major draw to Thailand was the tropical outdoor options that are available. I have taken students to the mountains of Pai near Chiang Mai to the warm blue waters of the Andaman sea.

We have trained on beautiful islands like Koh Samui and climbed some of the best rock climbing available in the world in Krabi province. When you are not training in the martial arts, there is plenty of adventure in Thailand.

Enjoy a fresh and extremely healthy coconut on the beach, or go snorkeling and diving for a price that you can feel great about. Feel like checking out the bridge over the river Kwai or exploring the Erawan Waterfall in Kanchanaburi? No problem.

How about taking a trip to Hua Hin where the King lives and enjoy the long ocean strip. You name it, adventure is abundant and access to that adventure is made extremely accessible.

It might sound silly, but many of my students found that renting a moped and cruising around the islands to be one of the best experiences. Simple adventures like taking a long tail boat from one island to another can be quite thrilling. Adventure is often equated to new experiences and Thailand has plenty to offer.

I believe Thailand offers the best of Southeast Asia, but one of the added benefits to being in Thailand is that with a hop, skip and a jump you can be in experience new adventures in Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, or Cambodia.

You can stretch that just a bit to visit China, Singapore, Hong Kong or further to places like Taiwan and Japan. When you are in Thailand, other locations in Asia feel closer and you are more likely to explore.

What Thailand has to offer is of course amazing. However, the real benefits of Thailand hit when we get practical and this is determined by how much of a hole any trip will have on our pocket book.

2. A big reason students love Thailand is financial

As with any functional service - money is an important tool. Students that attend my programs, often do so for long periods. Many students prefer 1-12 months of training as opposed to weekend seminars or weekly courses that often cost far more.

Another benefit of a long-term program in Thailand is the students lower personal costs as compared to what they would pay in the States. There are too many discounts to list here, but here are a few to consider.

3. Cheaper Food in Thailand

You can pick up a decent healthy meal for about $2.00 in Thailand, and that is in a restaurant. On the street, you can get a filling bowl of noodles for 50 cents. In California, you are lucky to get a meal for $5.00 (though Subway helps with their $5.00 foot long sandwiches) and 50 cents might buy you a candy bar.

I also tip a minimum of $5.00 in restaurants in the States. A tip like that in Thailand would be outrageous, even 20 Thai Baht is high and that is less than a $1.00

4. Entertainment can be costly, but not in Thailand

In Thailand, you can see a movie for about $5.00. In California, a movie ticket can cost you closer to $10.00. In addition, the quality of movie theaters in Thailand is often superior to what you find elsewhere.

For example, you can choose to sit in a reclining mini couch, and choose your seats in advance (even pay less depending on where you want to sit). In the States, if you cannot choose your seat in advance you are forced to arrive early to get a good seat and also be forced to sit through previews and commercials.

This savings extends to almost every sector of entertainment, whether you want to rent a motorcycle, go to a nightclub or ride an elephant, the costs in comparison are outstanding.

5. Shopping in Thailand

Although students and adventures may not have shopping on their mind, it can still be a factor for those that like to buy and why not save some money in the process. Thailand is famous for getting a great deal on your purchase and has shopping streets all over the country. You can pick up designer jeans for $20 as opposed to $200 or invest in a work of art.

I managed to buy gifts for Christmas for everyone in the family in Thailand and spend the same amount (including flight, hotel and gifts) as I would have spent just on the gifts themselves (judging from my normal spending habits) in California.

I also am able to buy items that are unique and not just another gadget to clutter their closets. Many people have made their short term stay in Thailand into a business and fund their new lifestyle by purchasing items in Thailand to sell in the States.

6. Travel in Thailand

You can travel from the mountains of Pai (north of Chiang Mai) all the way south to the islands of Koh Phi Phi (where they filmed the movie the Beach) for about $60. This would cost you in the hundreds in the States. When I lived in Pai, I would fly to the city for only $30. The bus ride down the mountain is about $5 and takes 2 hours.

This travel savings extends to almost every type of travel in Thailand. You can take a taxi anywhere you want for about $10 an hour or hop in a tuk tuk for $5.00 and take a scenic route. Students have rented mopeds for an entire month in Pai for only $50 or $150 in more expensive locations like Samui Thailand.

If you want to jump on a short flight to Cambodia to see the Angkor Wat (a wonder of the world) or take a train to Malaysia - no problem, and it won't hurt your pocket book. I often fly to Singapore from Bangkok and it costs me less than it would to fly from city to city in California.

7. Housing and accommodation in Thailand

A great thing about Thailand is that you have a choice of stay that will meet every budget. In California, a typical hotel is $100 per night and for a month at a basic hotel you will pay about $3,000 or more. This is usually without Internet, without food and without additional benefits.

In Bangkok for example, you can get a one-month stay in a great hotel that will include internet, give you a great breakfast buffet (usually for two), swimming pools, fitness gym, lounge use and daily maid service all for $1,000.

Not to mention these locations can be found with a small kitchen area - much like Extended Stay of America only at half the cost. Now $1,000 a month may not be cheap to many, but this is for an upscale location. You can also stay in a small house for as low as $200 a month in many locations.

I have stayed in a $2,000 a month location on a tropical island and I have stayed at a $300 a month location on the same island. Both locations were great and no, you do not have to live in the alley to get a great price.

All of this is very important to a long-term student of the martial arts. They often only have so much money to spare and they need it to last them a long time. Students that come to California programs often run out of money in a few weeks (going out to town to eat, seeing movies, buying ridiculously pricey popcorn and hanging out with friends).

Whereas in Thailand, they can stretch that same money into months and actually get more entertainment - not to mention enjoy the splendors of a tropical island or globally famous city.

8. Medical care

One time flying to Thailand for another adventure I couldn't help overhearing the couple in front of me. They were not together but seated next to each other. One person asked the other why they were going to Thailand. His response at first startled me. He said he was going to Thailand to see a dentist as it was just too costly in the States by comparison.

I have not seen a dentist in Thailand however I do remember a student that had a cavity removed for only about 500 baht in a great location off of a main Soi in Bangkok.

I also remember visiting the hospital in Chiang Mai and after visiting three doctors for three separate issues (thought I would try to get as much covered as possible at the same time) it only cost me about 1000 Thai baht (about $35 U.S. Dollars). Naturally, this person must be getting some major dental work done to spend $1,000 or close to it to fly to Thailand to see a dentist.

However, Thailand is famous for those looking for high quality medical care for a low price. I often catch myself saying, "I will wait till I am back in Thailand to get that checked out." Many people have a poor view of Thailand when it comes to health care.

Yes, you don't have to get a prescription when you want some medicine to fight off a major virus and you don't have to get 5 screenings before you can see an expert.

All of the facilities I have been to in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and even the island of Koh Samui have been top notch locations with modern equipment and English speaking doctors. I would wager that I received more attention and better care than I have in the States.

As a martial artists and adventurer - it is important to know that when I am traveling that there are up-to-date medical solutions in the event of an accident.

9. Culture of new locations

I once heard that there was more culture in Yoghurt than there was in the California. This might be why websites like EscapeAmerica.com are springing up supporting life outside our borders. Some people are looking for more than freedom of speech.

Now I love California and I am proud to be an American, so I will not have much to say about negative concerns. However, having run adventure programs for the better part of 20 years and teaching students for the same amount of time, I know where they can get more for their money.

An exciting part of travel and adventure is meeting new people and learning new languages. Going to places like Thailand will offer a NEW approach and with that comes a benefit that is hard to measure.

If you live in the United States already, traveling to another location in the U.S. will not offer much variety. It is hard to grow if you are not challenged to adapt to new locations, meet new people and learn new languages.

10. Friends in Asia

Naturally, you can meet friends almost anywhere you go, but there is something unique about traveling in a country with others of like mind. When you are abroad, you will meet others that have taken the time and have the time to spend - people from all over the world.

In California, you are likely to meet more people just like you. This can be boring. My first trip to Thailand I made good friends with people from places like Holland, England, Norway, Australia and of course Thailand itself.

11. Time to play in Thailand

One of the reasons I created my long-term program was to offer a lifestyle that is against the grain of modern society. If, for example, you come to a typical city in the United States, you will meet people that are more than likely following a very specific path. They are working, going to school or busy with their family or business.

Long term students can however get together easily to take a road trip almost any time to either explore a new location, go rock climbing or take a road trip. The same ability to meet new people and adventure with them spontaneously is available in Thailand. This is because Thailand and places like Bangkok is an adventure hub of the world.

In a typical city in the U.S. you are more likely to be challenged with schedules and a tight work week. In Thailand and for students and adventurers alike, the weekend is whenever they want it to be.

12. Moving to Thailand

I ran my long-term martial arts program in California for more than 5 years. I have not had one student of hundreds, move to California (other than to train at our camp) for a new lifestyle. However, with only a few years in Thailand, I have had already three students that are trying or have tried to move and set up life in Thailand (outside of our program).

Is it because their American dollar will go a lot further? Is it because they have additional freedoms they are excited about in a new country? Is it because they can escape the almost forced social strategy that is pushed in the U.S.?

Any of these might be true, and they are a few reasons that so many foreigners attempt to set up life in Thailand. Even if it is just for a change of pace and a break from the typical norm. Many might head home in a year or two refreshed and ready to settle down in their home country.

My last visit I met a man that was to only be in Bangkok for a few weeks decide to move and live there. He was only there to organize shipments of gems to the U.S. and realized he could spread his wealth and live like a king as opposed to just getting by in the States.

One of my students made the comment the first week I introduced him to Thailand that he had seen enough to know he never wants to come back - that same person is now living in Thailand and has been for more than a year now. It only took another week to convince him that his typical Untied States views of Thailand were way off base.

Do students want to live in Thailand? Some might, but the point is that for a long-term program to be successful, you need to be able to survive in a location long term. As a child, living on a tropical island was a dream and a goal. Living on an island in Thailand is not as challenging as some might think.

Our program also serves as a stepping-stone for introducing students to a new life. I too am able to fully appreciate the good with the bad. As I am from California, I am spoiled with majestic mountains and National Parks like Yosemite. However, I have found that I appreciate the wealth the United States has to offer by living abroad.

13. Freedom to be YOU

As a U.S. citizen you truly have a lot of freedom, but you will only begin to respect your real freedoms when you travel to a country where you have even more opportunities to do what you want and how you want to live.

In Thailand, for example, if you want to live in one location for a week or months, it is very easy to do so without the hassle of paperwork, credit checks and other headaches that limit you from actually feeling free.

Naturally, every country has limitations and Thailand has many. However, for the long-term martial artist or adventurer - Thailand has plenty of options to make you smile.

Consider being able to pick up a moped in a matter of minutes, or rent a 1 month serviced apartment without anything other than your passport (and the ability to pay of course).

In the States, most houses or apartments that you rent (other than outrageously expensive hotels) charge you first month's rent, last month's rent and a security deposit. Many only charge a security deposit, but this is usually the same as the rent.

In Thailand, there is a lot of flexibility with how you decide to use your rental space too. Usually you are not charged more if you have more people in your room. This is great for students that are looking to adventure with friends and get the best deal.

If book a hotel in the States (including Extended Stay Hotels) and add another adult, you will most likely be charged more for the same room and service. If anything, they should be giving you an additional benefit, such as breakfast.

My point is to point out the positive benefits for long-term students to choose Thailand as their destination for growth. I expect everyone to return home with tales of adventure and eventually settle down where they are happy and can make a successful life for themselves.

However, the truth is that jobs will always be there and family and friends will be waiting for you to return. Therefore, while you are focused on training and personal growth, you might as well get the best adventure and experience that your money can buy.

14. Self-Power

I remember something that I either read or heard from a public speaker more than 20 years ago. The quote or text was something like this:

If you want to be a success - leave home.

Thinking about my experiences over the last 20 years, I would have to agree that my time away from home has taught me some very important lessons. Thailand has a lot to teach any open minded individual, but the big lesson is already available as the student must leave their country and embark on a journey.

This step alone is a big step for any adult and one that I believe will help to teach them more about who they are as a human being.

One of the major differences between our martial art system and others label based martial art styles is the fact that we really push self-powered training and personal growth. It is about creating a lifestyle that you love.

I remember traveling for the first time on the boat to Koh Phi Phi island from Phuket thinking how great it would be to share this experience with students. It reminded me of the feeling Bruce Lee's character might have felt on his island trip where he was headed to deal some kung-fu fighting in the film Enter the Dragon.
