Belize is a country located in Central America, with outlying cayes, or islands, scattered throughout the Caribbean Sea. The reef of Belize is the largest reef in the Western Hemisphere and was listed under UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1996.
The reef is part of the larger Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which runs approximately 900 kilometers from Cancun, Mexico to the edge of Honduras.
Belize's portion is approximately 300 kilometers along the coastline and sits offshore in a range from 300 meters from the northern cayes to approximately 40 kilometers in the south. Depending on the time of coral formations and aquatic life you wish to see will usually determine where along the coast you wish to explore.
Ambergris Caye, Belize offers visitors some fantastic opportunities to experience Belize reef scuba diving at its finest.
Only a short 10 minute boat ride from most dive shops on the island, access to the dozens of incredible dive shops is tremendously easy. Sites such as Tackle Box Canyon, the Amigos Wreck, and Hol Chan marine reserve can offer some divers a fantastic day of Belize scuba diving.
With its vast array of scuba diving variety, Ambergris Caye as something for every level of diver to get excited about. To the extreme newbies visiting diving the shallows for the first time, or hard-core enthusiasts chasing the elusive whale shark migration, Belize scuba diving is simply second to none.
