Welcome to the World of Geocaching!

Geocaching is now a worldwide sport, and its enthusiasts are avid, and some might even say they are participants. It's a hugely popular global treasure hunting game that uses the Internet to list, and a GPS device to hide and seek treasure (caches).

While it is pronounced and sounds like Geo Cashing, it is actually spelled geocaching. The "geo" part stands for geography, and the "caching" part stands for hiding a cache (something of value).

In this exciting and fun sport, "caching" actually has a double meaning. In computer terms a cache is information stored in memory which can be retrieved easily. A cache, in camping and hiking terminology is a place where provisions are hidden and stored.

It's a terrific outdoor sport that can be enjoyed by the entire family. But, the more difficult caches can be extremely challenging, even daring, to the most adventurous and athletic of
participant.

Newbies, just getting their feet wet, usually start out with the easier rated caches just until they learn the ropes. They will want to get familiar with how to program and use their GPS unit, and they will also want to begin accumulating the various items of equipment they will need before they go after the more difficult caches.

A good, dependable and accurate GPS system is essential for successful geocaching. A GPS unit is an electronic device that uses Latitude and Longitude coordinates to pinpoint your approximate location anywhere on earth. It's used in geocaching to navigate from your current location to the site of the cache you have selected.

Depending on the complexity of the device, some have built-in compasses, a voice navigation feature, and their own maps. The GPS is really a computer that is capable of receiving signals from GPS satellites; to be really accurate, it needs to receive signals from four satellites, however, with signals from three satellites it can determine its general location.

Search online for GPS units, that's where you will, most likely, find the real bargains. Or, of course, they can also be purchased at department, electronic, and camping and boat supply stores.

The rules for Geocaching are pretty simple; if you take something (swag) from the cache you've located, leave something of equal or greater value; make a notation in the cache logbook about your find; and go online to the same site where you found your information about the cache and log about your experience.

Every cache contains a logbook, and information from the owner of the cache. It might also contain notes from other visitors and valuable information or treasure.

Caches can be stashed literally anywhere. When selecting a target cache, be sure to read the online descriptions carefully, paying close attention to the difficulty and terrain ratings. As examples, do you need to be a rock climber or SCUBA diver to locate the cache, or will you have to cross a river, or find your way in the desert?

Even with the accuracy of a top notch GPS unit, a skillful city placement of a cache can be difficult to locate. The competition to find the cache first can become fierce. The cache can either be placed above or below ground or on the outside of buildings. It can become maddening to not be able to locate the cache when you know that you're standing within feet of it.

Want to find a cache near you, treasure hunts or caches are listed online for all to see. Just for kicks, I hopped online and found a number of caches within a short driving distance of my home and one was as close as my local dog park, just three blocks away.

The whole idea of geocaching is to have fun, so, even if you're not in top physical shape, there are tons of posted caches that will still be both stimulating and challenging for you. Geocaching really does answer the call to adventure no matter what your level of expertise might be.

Be sure to check out my blog that checks out the best gps for geocaching. Also, we would love to hear your experiences with geocaching and what you think are the best gps units.

Tour to Himalayan Mountains

The Himalayas form the wide mountain system of central Asia. The Himalayan mountain range is the youngest and the highest of all on this planet. Himalayan mountains display an exciting range of mountain scenery from the high ranges of Great Himalayas to the foothills of Shivalik mountain peaks.

Himalayan mountains offer its visitors various snowcapped mountain peaks, evergreen alpine meadows, a number of beautiful lakes, several high glaciers and some of the sacred snow fed rivers.

Himalayan mountain range has ten of the world's highest mountain peaks, out of which eight are located in Nepal, which also include Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain peak.

Mount Everest, K2 (Austin Godwin), Kanchenjunga, Nanga Parbat and Annapurna are the five main mountains which form the Himalayan mountain range.

Most of its lofty peaks remain covered with snow throughout the year. These are also a source of origin for a number of snow fed rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Indus, Brahmaputra, Satluj and Beas etc.

Majestic Mountains

There are a number of majestic mountains ranging above 7,300 meters above sea level. These include the highest mountain peak Mount Everest (8,864 m), Kanchenjunga (8,598 m) and Nanda Devi (7,817 m).

Himalayas in India are divided into three main categories i.e. Greater Himalayas, which have the highest Himalayan peaks, Middle Himalayas consisting of Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges and Lower Himalayas or Shivalik range.

Himalayan mountain range extends 1,500 miles in length and 250 miles in width. Most of the high Himalayan mountain ranges remain covered with snow throughout the year.

Birth of Himalayan Mountains

Himalayas now stand on the area which was once under a deep sea called as Tethys Sea. The rocks comprising of Mount Everest were once deposited on the floor of Tethys Sea. Himalayan mountain range was created due to the powerful earth movements, millions of years ago.

The Indian Tectonic plates pressed against the Eurasian continental plates and thus resulting in raising of deposits laid down under the Tethys Sea. Rising of the Himalayan mountains still continue today.

Flora and Fauna in Himalayan Mountains

Himalayas are covered with varied array of flora and fauna with its mesmerising natural beauty and exotic wildlife. Where the Western Himalayas boast of various varieties of trees like Deodars, Blue Pines, Silver Firs, Chirpines, Junipers and Spruce, Eastern Himalayas have abundance of Oaks, Birch, Maples, Rhododendrons and Dwarf Willows.

There are a number of natural parks in Himalayan mountain ranges which serve as a natural habitat for a vast variety of animal and bird species. Since the Himalayan ranges have a harsh climate, animals, birds and plants which can adjust them in such environment can only survive in the region.

Some of the main species found here include Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tiger, Deer, Chital, Wild Boar, Elephant, Rhinoceros, Musk Deer, Red Panda, Monkey, Langur, Kashmir Stag and Black Bear.

Apart from this there are a number of bird species which are found in Himalayan mountains. Various migrated bird species also make Himalayas their home during winters, when there is very low temperature at their origin places.
Himalayan Climate

There are harsh climate conditions in most of the Himalayan regions. Variation in climate occurs according to the change in elevation of the region. With the increase in elevation of the region, temperature gets cold on the other hand it becomes warm and wet with the decrease in altitude.

There are mainly two seasons in Himalayan mountain ranges i.e. Summers and Winters. Though winters are extremely cold as the mountain peaks receive heavy snowfall but summers are quite mild and make the Himalayan destinations best summer holiday hideouts.

Summer season here expands from April to June. Monsoons arrive in Himalayan region in the months of July and August. Whereas, winters are witnessed from November to March.

When to Visit Himalayan Mountain Destinations
The best season to visit Himalayas is between April to June and from September to November. However, those who love to enjoy the winters and winter sports, the months from December to February are the best as winter sports events and winter carnivals are organised during this period in various Himalayan destinations.

As Close As I'll Ever Get to Being an Astronaut

There's about a 110% chance that most of us will never become an astronaut. So I always cherish those situations that get me a little closer to realizing this impossible dream. And a window seat on a jet aircraft is fine with me! I don't need astronaut training and I still get to see Planet Earth and its atmospheric partner from above.

It's pretty amazing to be looking down from 4 to 8 miles (20,000 to 40,000 feet) high. Those automobile packed highways really do look like ant trails. Coastlines really do look just like they are drawn on maps. And, at night, the urban patterning clearly shows population centers large and small.

Meandering rivers with their sand or soil deposit regions, coastal inlet patterns showing ocean currents and erosion / deposition regions and mountain regions with snow-covered peaks and talus slopes abound.

I've now mastered the art of cloud watching from flight altitude. And I am amazed that regardless of what clouds look like from the outside, they are all "foggy" inside. Flying next to monstrous thunderstorm clouds or even nearby these sometimes lonesome-looking giants can humble almost anyone.

Experience has shown me that it is best to get a window seat on the side of the plane away from the sun. This keeps you cooler, eliminates glare and, in general, allows for better photographic opportunities.

Beware, however, your seat choice. On some aircraft there can be unusual arrangements of windows and seats or window views can be blocked. For example, on some 737 aircraft, row 22 has a wall, not a window. On the MD-88, the last 3 rows of the cabin sit adjacent to the plane's fuselage-mounted engines. On any aircraft, seats over and just behind the wings can either be blocked by the wing or have interference from jet engine exhaust.

Smudge-free windows are needed for the best observing and photographing. I keep a clean tissue with me (or I use a napkin from cabin service) to clean any spots from the inside window. On some windows, however, the special UV protection film has been damaged, leaving splotches. On others, scratches are all too evident.

Since reflection is an issue, even without direct sunlight, I try to wear dark colored clothes without any patterns. And I always keep the tray table locked and stowed to minimize reflection.

Just watching can be fun. But I love to photograph what I see. I once captured an image of a jet exhaust (condensation trail or CONTRAIL) slicing across a glory (the colorful circular pattern sometimes seen on lower-level clouds). I've even seen rainbows, halos, and clouds resembling fish (flying fish, of course).

I also have photographs showing waves approaching coastlines, coastal ocean currents with different colored water, and my favorite, fields of irrigation circles. These circles occasionally dot southeast locales, but from west Texas northward and west to Arizona, these mark places where ground water is used to support irrigation. Sometimes they are green (active growth) and sometimes brown. Some, due to land use limitations or other factors, resemble the Pac-Man pie-shaped character of early computer game fame.

So, if you haven't tried cloud and earth watching from flight altitude before, hopefully you will. It's a great way to enjoy the planetary view and it sure helps time "fly by."

Barbados - A Catamaran Cruise Ranks Number 1 Among Barbados Activities

Your Barbados holiday only spans so many days and there is so much to do, from absolutely nothing to dancing until the wee hours at Harbour Lights on the beach. However, one activity takes center stage. It's the must-do activity in your Barbados vacation: a catamaran cruise. Why does it rank #1? Let me count the ways:

1. You get to swim with Barbados' magnificent giant sea turtles in the clear blue Caribbean Sea. Nothing beats communing up close & personal with these beautiful, gentle, ancient creatures.

2. It's a fabulous way to see the west coast of the island. The cats take you to prime snorkeling areas to see coral, shipwrecks, the turtles, and stunning white beaches.

3. It's a full day but not a long day. You leave around 10 a.m. and return around 2:30 or 3. Libations flow, you relax, you swim, you snorkel in the pristine Caribbean Sea. It's pretty much a perfect Caribbean day.

4. It's fun and yet not a "booze cruise" or party boat (unless you book it privately - then it can be pretty much anything you want). It's a great time for grandparents, families, and couples.

5. The boat has plenty of shade - or you can lie out in the sun, your choice.

6. The crews working on the boats are first-rate: friendly, helpful, engaging, and highly professional.

7. Lunch is fabulous! By the time you are served lunch, you're relaxed, friendly with other passengers, and hungry from snorkeling. Lunch is a Bajan feast, so eat up!

8. You won't get seasick. With the very wide double-hull, catamarans are very stable in the water. Plus, the Caribbean Sea is very calm. I'm prone to seasickness but have never been bothered by it on a catamaran cruise in Barbados.

9. Everything you need is supplied. Wear your swimsuit and bring a towel and sunscreen. You'll be leaving your shoes behind; only bare feet are allowed on board (unless you have a medical reason for needing shoes).

Barbados Catamaran Cruises: Safety First But Fun's a Close Second

I've never heard a bad thing about any of the catamaran companies in Barbados, but when asked for my personal recommendation, I mention Tiami because I've been on numerous cat cruises with them and each time the experience has been remarkable.

The crews on the boats are highly trained in safety and very kind. My aunt Shirley, who's 80, has a bad foot; our Tiami captain told Shirley she was his girlfriend for the day and throughout the cruise he took special notice of her. Even though she was unable to get into the water, my aunt had a fabulous time. I wasn't sure if her very good time was due to the glorious scenery along the west coast of Barbados, the gorgeous sea turtles she saw in the water -- or the personalized attention she received.

Booking a catamaran cruise is the number-one recommendation I have for anyone visiting beautiful Barbados. Happy sailing!

Camping and Caravanning Holidays Offer Cheap Alternatives

When money is tight, many people are forced to curtail their holiday spending and therefore the number of holidays they take. However, there are plenty of ways to reduce the amount of money a holiday costs with a little creative thinking.

Instead of reducing the number of holidays planned for the future, many are choosing to spend a little more time in the preparation phase to ensure that they can spend more time enjoying themselves on holidays.

There are plenty of ways to spend less cash on holidays, from booking trips well in advance to snapping up good deals early and searching for discount hotels rooms or transport. However, one of the best ways to make sure that spending is kept well within holiday budgets is to choose to provide accommodation and transport for yourself.

It's no coincidence that in times of financial strain the number of people choosing camping holidays rises. Not only do holidaymakers save themselves from having to pay for hotels in their desired holiday spot but the advantages to driving to your holiday destination yourself are manifold.

When people aren't tied to their accommodation not only are they able to take their holidays at their own pace, but they will also have the opportunity to discover off the beaten trail destinations and attractions when visiting new places.

Not content with containing themselves to a tent, many also choose to enhance their situation further by attaching a caravan to their envoy. A caravan is an ideal choice when looking for freedom to explore on holidays as all tourists have to do is hitch it to the back of their vehicle and they'll be safe in the knowledge that they'll always have somewhere comfortable to sleep when night falls.

Caravanning trips need not be confined to the home country of the travellers either, as many international ferries have provisions for caravans that make it easy for caravanning fans to take their portable home away from home overseas.

And of course, like camping, caravanning offers plenty of money-saving benefits. From the chance to make your own packed lunches for enjoying on the move to the happy fact you won't be hit with surprise additions to a hotel bill, caravans are great for thrifty travellers.

Once tourists have a full tank of petrol, the all important caravan insurance and a food supply, they are ready to roll and start exploring the terrain of their chosen holiday destination without having to worry about spiralling costs.

Holidays in Cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and whatever time of the year you plan to visit, the sun will be shining. Cyprus is an ideal place for a summer holiday and is a favourite destination with holiday makers, with over 2 and a half million vistors a year.

A holiday in Cyprus offers an unbelievable experience for groups of friends, family's, couples and the lone traveller. Whether you visit for culture and history, the clean beaches, skiing or hiking in the Troodos Mountains, cycling, windsurfing, boating, diving and snorkelling, horse riding, or just for its warm atmosphere and relaxed vibe, you won't be disappointed.

The most well known beach is Phinikoudes in Larnaca where the sand extends five hundred metres and is watched over by a lifeguard, offering total safety for children. It has well placed cafes and restaurants, markets, changing rooms and showers and facilities for a range of water sports and palm trees for shade.

Paphos is more cosmopolitan. It has its own fishing harbour and is a resort full of history, culture and fun with a variety of places to shop and eat, as well as up-market bars and lively discos.

Inbetween Protaras and Agia Napa is Pernera beach. It has a Blue Flag award for its glorious golden sands and moderate waves, which make it ideal for various water sports.

Ayia Napa is just the place to chill out on the white sand or take a dip in the inviting blue water. Or you can explore the historical sites, visit the 16th century monastery and walk the cobbled streets. Look around the shop and take a wander along the harbour. Ayia Napa is world famous for its nightlight.

A top Cyprus destination is Protaras, great for family holidays. Protaras has beautiful sandy beaches, good variety of watersports, crystal clear waters, nightlife and countryside.

Coral Bay lies in East Cyprus. Shaped like a horseshoe, the cove has white sands and shallow waters. It is a perfect spot if you are looking for lazy days on the beach or chilling out before you hit the nightlife. The bay is lined with shops, bars and restaurants and if you fancy a change you can explore the beauty of the Akamas National Park.

Northern Cyrpus is the best kept secret of the Mediterranean. It is steeped in history, has a sunny climate, amazing views along a coastline that stretches for miles, yet its slow pace of life makes it feel like a village. The deep crystal clear seas make in one of the best areas on the island for diving and there are some interesting ancient harbours.

Its getting easier to travel around North Cyprus. You can take flights from Ercan in the north or Larnaca and Paphos in the south for arrival flights. Exploring is fun whether on foot or you hire a scooter, car, bicycle or a specialist mobility scooter.

Folk music in Cyprus is a custom and can be compared to that of greek dances including Tatsia, Syrtos, Kartsilamas and Sousta. The pop music again is influenced by Greece and the Cypriots also perform a type of music poetry know as Chattista.

Visit Grand Marais Minnesota For a Vacation That is Close to Nature

I've been going to Grand Marais, Minnesota since I can remember. I have many relatives living there so there were many reasons to visit including the beautiful scenery and activities that go along with it.

My two favorite things about Grand Marais are Lake Superior and the Superior National Forest. Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and many of them are near Grand Marais and are in the Superior National Forest, which is where the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is located.

If you like camping, hiking, fishing and canoeing, there is no better area in the United States. You can back country camp or camp at one of the many campgrounds just East of town, up the Gunflint Trail-a scenic road that travels 50 miles into the Superior National Forest.

In town there are a number of shops, galleries and restaurants to explore, including the Ben Franklin store that still has product and prices from the 1970's. This is also where you will find the shore of Lake Superior, not that you would miss it.

Since I was a little kid I have explored and wandered the breakwall and rock ledges that form the harbor. And if you want to take in a beautiful sunrise, this is the place to do it, watching the sun set behind the Sawtooth Mountains.

If you're into ice fishing, snowmobiling or skiing this winter wonderland is an amazing place as well, but for me I try to stay away in the winter. It gets cold with lots of snow.

National Parks - Your Next Outdoor Adventure

National Parks are one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. A trip to a park can be taken on a short weekend by families, young groups or big groups. Everybody enjoys taking a break from our hectic routine and if there is National park nearby, the choice is obvious.

On a weekend it is advisable to leave early as a short weekend trip to the nearest national park will be on the minds of many like-minded people and hence it may become frustrating to face the traffic or visiting the national park will be like visiting a marketplace. On weekends the park can be full of cars, the parking lot can be full and traveling in your car can be a pain.

To get away from the hustle and to see some scenic spots, it will be advisable to park your vehicle and wander inside on your own. Most of the scenic places are located quite nearby to the places where the bus or car tours go but somehow people don't tend to explore further and hence miss out on these great spots.

You cannot enjoy these places from the insides of the vehicle. So get out and be a little adventurous. You will discover a new world and new picturesque places to see and explore.

Be ready to exert just a bit more energy than the majority of the park visitors and get away from the usual places where the hordes of park goers are placed or the usual spots of interest with hundreds of people looking at one particular direction.

One should also not miss out on opportunities such as hiking, driving through scenic roads, exploring wildlife, bird watching and participating in activities such as cycling, walking and others if the said national park offers so.

The outdoor adventure is not only about going to far off places and spending tons of money on it. There can be places of interest in your neighborhood, but you have to find such places. The best way to go about it is to contact your travel agent and ask for such holidays in the neighborhood.

Chances are there that you will get some good information which you may not have known about. Hiking through a national park can be fun. Short term adventure holidays are popular now so go and get the best of them.

The Land of the Roar, Trumpet and Song

Aptly described as the land of the Roar, Trumpet and Song, the Jim Corbett National Park represents a scene of remarkable beauty.

Shake hands with nature as you take a journey into the wild. The heavenly abode for adventure lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, Corbett National Park, set in the Shivalik foothills of the Himalayas in Uttaranchal along the bank of Ramganga River, is India's first national park.

Corbett is named after the hunter-turned-naturalist/ conservationist, Jim Corbett. While Corbett National park is known for its varied wildlife, it is more commonly famous for the launching of Project Tiger.

Over 50 mammals, 600 birds and 25 reptile species have been spotted here, the main being the tiger, leopard, elephant, chital, sambar, nilgai, gharial, King Cobra, muntjac, wild boar, hedgehog, common musk shrew, flying fox, Indian Pangolin, the rare fish eating long-nosed crocodiles and nearly 600 species of birds.

While you can take the 4W Jeeps through the Park, you could choose to go on this thrilling sojourn in the same way the royalty of yore did, centuries ago - the "Elephant Safari". Undisturbed by the mechanical roar of a car or jeep, open to the skies, accompanied only by the rhythmic scuffing of elephant's feet and the creaks of the wooden howdah.

The occasional booming of wild elephants to each other in close proximity can make you hang on tight to the wooden pole of the howdah. The ride can be a mix of moments of pure terror interspersed with long periods of utter peace.

From Ulan Ude to Novosibirsk on the Trans Siberian Railway

This week, we look at the stops along the Trans Siberian railway between Ulan Ude and Novosibirsk after we looked at the journey from Beijing to Ulan Bator last time.

Ulan Ude is the first stop on this leg of the tour and marks the train's entry into Russia. The city, which is the capital of the republic of Buryatia, is heavily influenced by both Asian and Russian culture, giving it a distinct appeal.

One of the main attractions of Ulan Ude is the Ivolginsky Datsan temple, which is the main focal point of Buddhism in Russia. It is home to the body of the 12th Pandito Hambo Lama, Dashi-Dorzho Itigelov, which is mysteriously still in the same condition as when it was buried in the 1920s, despite never being mummified or embalmed.

The temple also offers some striking examples of Buryat art. Another popular part of Ulan Ude is where it offers access to Lake Baikal, giving an easier approach compared with the hills on the other side of the lake.

Moving on from Ulan Ude, your Trans Siberian railway tour will next call at the aforementioned lake by taking you around it. Lake Baikal is the deepest and oldest lake in the world and carries a significant proportion of the world's fresh water supply.

Its natural beauty is astounding, thanks to the mountains and forests that surround it, and you may have the opportunity to stop and picnic by the lake and take in the nearby villages.

Back on the train, your next port of call will be Irkutsk, which is another popular destination for accessing Lake Baikal among tourists. Its highlights include its quaint architecture and a wealth of museums explaining the rich history of the city, which is one of the oldest in the Siberian region.

The next day will see you stop in Novosibirsk, the capital of Siberia and the third biggest Russian city after Moscow and St Petersburg. You will not want to miss the sights of the Red Avenue, Lenin Square and the Aleksandr Nevsky Cathedral, nor neglect the opportunity to take its numerous museums, theatres and art galleries.

Visit Intourist to book a Trans Siberian railway tour where you will see the best that Russian rail has to offer. Intourist has been opening the gates to travellers wanting to experience the enigmatic spirit of Russia, Ukraine and the Baltics for over 70 years. We have an extensive network of offices, hotels and suppliers and are proud of our unrivalled know-how and ability to provide you with the most reliable, up-to-date, specialist knowledge available anywhere on the market.

Bushmen Or Big Six Safari - Ultimate Safari Experiences

You're probably familiar with the standard safari circuit, with its check lists of animals to spot and its tourist-filled 'Mecca's'.

If this doesn't sound quite like your type of safari holiday and you're looking for something more adventurous then Africa has a huge number of safari-worthy destinations to suit your needs.

When people dream of going on an African safari, the image they have in their mind is often very close to reality in Botswana. If you want to take a 4x4 across arid sand dunes in search of big game, or if you want the chance to become part of the indigenous culture and experience what it is like to live in one of the world's harshest environments like the famous desert bushmen, then Botswana is the place for you.

In Botswana you can learn first-hand about the plants and wildlife of the African outback, be taught how to lay traps and hunt for food, and be guided around some of the most striking and remote regions of the continent.

If you're more of a numbers person, then you should check out big six safari options in Uganda. What's the big six you ask? Well, when you take a safari you'll almost always guaranteed to be taken to see the big five (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard). Uganda's trump 6 card is the mountain gorilla.

When you're on safari, it's all about the experience and one of the most important things is to feel like you're out there on your own - which means absolutely no queuing for jeeps. Choose your travel company wisely, make sure they know the area well. Bespoke travel companies are often a safe bet. Take a chance with you operator and you could end up as part of the herd!

Scotland Holidays - Aviemore and the Cairngorms

This area is a foremost tourist area in Scotland and is privileged to have two of the most distinctive ecosystems in the UK.

High up in the Cairngorms there is the relict flora of the last Ice Ages - a British tundra. As well as heather there is enough lichen to support reindeer, dwarf willows, the cloudberry (a kind of sweet yellow raspberry, extensive also in Norway) and the mountain aven (extensive also in Canada).

In the lowlands there are extensive woodland remnants of the ancient Caledonian forest, which have Crossbills, Black Grouse and Capercailzie. More famous are the Ospreys at Boat of Garten.

There is excellent walking country (railway assisted if you wish - there is a train almost to the top of the Cairngorm) with rounded mountain tops such as the Cairngorm, Ben Macdhui and Braeriach and deep U shaped glacial valleys like the Lairig Ghru west of the Cairngorm.

Deep cliffs, the altitude and the disorienting nature of the rounded mountain tops mean that you must take your walks with care. You must not walk on the tops when bad weather threatens (snow, fog, rain, wind) and you must have the right footwear and warm clothing

Aviemore itself was formerly a junction on the old Highland railway, expanded in the 1960's for the skiing on the Cairngorms. However global warming has taken its toll of the skiing and Aviemore is an all year round tourist centre. Here are various tourist attractions (a brewery, a steam railway) and watersports at Loch Morlich..

It lies in the broad valley or Strath of the River Spey, between the stunning Cairngorms and the lowering bulk of the Monadhliath mountains.

Along the Spey valley there are more small towns such as Kingussie, Newtonmore and Grantown-on-Spey. On the other side of the Cairngorms (to the South East) in Deeside, Ballater is the main centre together with the lovely village of Braemar, with Balmoral Castle lying between them. Following the Dee to the northeast you find your way to the remote but more rolling hills of Glenlivet, famous for its whiskey distilleries.

In these small attractive towns there are many self catering cottages and vacation rentals.

Family Ventures Across the Country in Grease-Powered RV

There's no question that it's extremely expensive to travel in an RV. With the rising costs of fuel, most families cannot afford to take that classic American trek across the country. The typical RV averages just 3 to 8 miles per gallon in even the best of driving conditions.

Even the hybrid models that are set to hit the market next year only get slightly better mileage. Fuel costs are prohibiting many RV enthusiasts from hitting the road this summer. One family is seeking to change that.

Steve Adler had experimented with waste vegetable oil vehicles before in the garage of his Rhode Island home. He bought a diesel Mercedes and implemented a WVO kit produced by a small Portland, Oregon company called Frybrid. Within just a few weeks, he was up and running on grease. Steve was very excited about this new venture. Fast food joints became the new gas stations.

The technology is rather simple. Large fuel tanks are filled up with filtered waste vegetable oil. A small amount of diesel fuel is used for the initial engine start up so the grease can be heated. Once it reaches the proper temperature, a switch in the fuel system transfers the lines over to nothing but waste vegetable oil.

The vehicle will continue to run on the grease for the remainder of the ride. Most fast food joints and restaurants are more than happy to give up their waste oil for free. They have to pay special waste disposal companies to come and haul the stuff away, so they'll be more than happy to have you do all of the work.

The Adler family had enjoyed RV trips in the past. On a number of occasions, they rented a large RV and traveled different areas of the country. They began to consider another trip, but the rental and fuel costs made it financially difficult. After brainstorming, Steve and his wife came up with a crazy idea. What if you could eliminate the fuel cost completely by running an RV on recycled vegetable oil?

After consulting Frybrid and shopping around, Steve located an RV for sale in Oregon. The family got one way plane tickets and their journey began. Though the family was faced with a number of hurdles in both the conversion process and on the road, they managed to get their dream up and running and back to Rhode Island. In order to help recoup some of the costs, the grease guzzling RV is now available for rental.

Customs and Cultural Diversity

We are living in an excited time in modern human history! There are numerous magazines, newspaper articles, cable channels and television programs set aside for travelers who want to experience various levels of adventure related to customs and cultures.

I am not an expert on all types of customs and cultures. However, what I can safely say is that I once lived in South America and I can certainly add my two bits to the conversation in regards to adventure travel.

Being born and raised in South America can certainly add to what I am about to say in regards to traveling to the Amazon Region. The Amazon River carries the largest volume of water is the world flowing about 3,300 miles from the Andes through Northern Brazil to the Atlantic Ocean.

A traveler wishing to visit the Amazon Region will expect a trip of a life time! The indigenous people of the Amazon Region are made of a number of tribes speaking distinct languages and each tribe has its own culture and custom.

It not easy to travel into the heart of the Amazon. The terrain is a mixture of thick rain forest, mountains, swamps, small rivers and waterfalls. There is also a large abundance of wild animals, reptiles (venomous and nonvenomous), poisonous plants and man eating ants. There is a plant called "Bena" and some tribes use this plant to create fear.

Legend says that some Bena plants can actually make a visitor in the Rain Forest lose their way. The plant gives off a special scent that traps it's un-looker into a trance-like state. It is also said that the only people that can actually help a lost visitor find their way is the local tribes within the area.

Some tribes in the Amazon are capable of shooting poisoned arrows or blow darts with their points dipped in the poison of some species of frogs and special plants. The staple diet of some tribes are mainly fruits, wild nuts vegetables and wild meat.

There are also some tribes who plant cassava or yuca and make intoxicating drinks from this vegetable. Traveling to the Amazon is not for the faint of heart. Travelers need to also be aware of the large infestation of mosquitos which carry malaria.

There are guided tours specially set up for travelers wishing to visit the Amazon. However, it is always necessary to check with your travel agent before you decide to visit this part of South America.
