Mallory on Everest

1920s Everest Trekking Equipment

Mallory was a pioneering mountaineer. When he tried to summit Mount Everest (8848 m) in 1924, things were quite different on the mountain.

The equipment he used would surprise a modern mountaineer: he climbed the world's mountain without a down jacket - something that people staying at Everest Base Camp three thousand metres below the peak now take for granted.

He had no crampons on his boots and his oxygen tanks were much heavier and much less reliable than those used on Everest trekking expeditions today. They resembled a jet pack more than breathing apparatus.

The infrastructure that mountaineers now benefit from, such as fixed ropes and ladders, had not yet been installed. His Everest Trek did not have the benefit of the weather information that meteorology offices provide today, nor was the support structure of Everest Base Camp fully established and organised.

Mallory and Irvine Tackle Everest

For his expedition, which would be his third attempt in four years, Mallory solicited the help of Andrew Irvine, who was an expert in experimental oxygen tanks. Having been granted permits from the Chinese government, they tackled Everest from the north on the Tibet side of the mountain.

On June 8th 1924, Mallory and Irvine were last seen heading for the "Second Step", a wall of rock on the Northeast Ridge of Everest above Camp 4. They never returned.

In 1924, and many times since, there were attempts made to locate the bodies of Mallory and Irvine. Finding evidence of whether or not their Everest Trek was successful has become somewhat of a holy grail in the mountaineering community.

Irvine's body has never been found, but Mallory's remains were found in 1999 by Conrad Anker, a mountaineer and an enthusiast in Everest trekking history. On the body, which he recognised by his 1920s period clothes, Anker found sun-goggles and a monogrammed handkerchief. The name "G. Mallory" was stitched inside the collar. There was also a rudimentary altimeter and a packet of letters Mallory had written to his family.

The cameras which Mallory and Irvine took with them, which could contain photographs from Everest's peak, are still missing. And so the speculation and mystery continues about whether they made it to the top before they fell victim to the mountain.

The route Mallory initiated is still used today for summit attempts such as the unsuccessful bid made by Ranulph Fiennes in 2008. Fiennes would succeed a year later, approaching via the Everest Base Camp and the southeast ridge on the Nepal side of the mountain.

This is the same route Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay took for the first expedition ever to reach the summit, thirty years after Mallory's disappearance. They looked for evidence that Mallory had made it, but found nothing.

Whether he made it to the summit or not, Mallory's vision and Everest trekking ambition was indisputable. In writing to his wife before the climb, Mallory's confidence was evident: "I look upon myself as the strongest of the lot, the most likely to get to the top." We will probably never know if he was right.

Kilimanjaro and Meru - An Introduction

Introducing Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro (5,892 m) is a mighty mountain and a worthy test for an enthusiastic trekker. Because it is the highest mountain in the continent of Africa it represents an obvious challenge and is ideal for people who want to experience dramatic trekking.

Kilimanjaro is an inactive volcano located in the north of Tanzania near the border of Kenya, and close to the Equator. Its three peaks are separate volcanic cones called Shira, Kibo and Mawensi, with the icy Kibo reaching the furthest into the sky.

National Parks

What people who embark on a Kilimanjaro trekking holiday might not expect is the variety of wildlife they are likely to see during their trip. Those that climb Kilimanjaro above the tree-line (at around 2,700 metres) will trek through the mountain's National Park zone, chosen by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, with the lower region designated a game reserve.

The neighbouring Arusha National Park has plenty to offer visitors in the way of safari animals, and is more importantly a chance for some essential acclimatisation on the park's Mount Meru (4,566 m) ahead of their Kilimanjaro trekking experience.

Arusha National Park lies just thirty miles from Kilimanjaro and is home to safari animals such as giraffes, buffalo, zebra, klipspringer and dik dik, which are species of tiny antelope. It is well worth visiting Arusha during a Kilimanjaro trekking holiday to see creatures such as blue monkeys and the playful black-and-white Colobus monkey, which are usually elusive on safaris but are easily found here. You might also spot a species of bird called a Turaco, which is a green with quiff.

Mount Meru - Kili's Cousin

As well as inhabiting the lowlands of the park you might see these animals on the lower slopes of Mount Meru, which is the fifth highest peak in Africa, and the second highest in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro.

Trekking up Meru makes ideal preparation for a Kilimanjaro climb because it affords an opportunity to acclimatize properly, and many good Kilimanjaro trekking holidays will incorporate Mount Meru into their itinerary for this reason.

Like Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru was formed from volcanic activity, but Meru is still active, with its last recorded eruption in 1910. A major explosive eruption thousands of years ago is responsible for Mt Meru's unique shape.

The eastern slope has collapsed leaving a concave shape called a caldera. Viewed from above, from a plane or by satellite imagery, it resembles a crescent moon. This caldera side faces Meru's larger cousin to the west, Kilimanjaro.

Trekking up Meru, you will be able to stop at the huts along the way, and you will pass through woodland and forests with animals and plants you will probably never have seen before.

Between Meru and Kilimanjaro

Facing east from the summit of Meru you will see 'Kili' in the distance, and on a day with good visibility you may be able to make out some of the features that lie between the two great peaks. You'll be able to distinguish between the grasslands and the savannah scrub.

The Jekukumia River runs from one mountain towards the other. There are also the Momella Lakes which are tinged with algae colouring them blues and greens, with wading birds such as pink flamingo. And of course, the horizon will be dominated by Kilimanjaro climbing into the clouds.

After summiting Mount Meru, hopefully you will be ready for trekking Kilimanjaro, which will be the peak of your holiday in Africa.

Swimming With Dolphins - Should You Do It?

Man has had a never ending interest in these mammals that swim the ocean. They are intelligent and friendly. More important they are friendly to humans. There are many people that won't go swimming in the ocean unless they see dolphins. They think they are safer in the water as the belief is that these creatures will chase sharks away.

Getting to know dolphins is an experience everyone should have a chance to do. Yes, it is a little expensive, but so well worth it.

If you can do it you should take a swim with the dolphins.

Their skin is so smooth you won't believe it. They have sharp teeth but won't bite you. These creatures are powerful residents of the ocean.

I have swam with the dolphins. The dolphin that I swam with was pregnant. The trainer would give it the hand signal to roll over so everyone could rub its belly. About 10 minutes after moving on to another part of swimming with them, the pregnant dolphin kept coming over to everyone and rolling over to have its belly rubbed. It must have really enjoyed it.

The dolphins also gave you a kiss. They would put their snouts (as I call them) up to your cheek.

Looking at the dolphins skin there are all kinds of scratches on it. I asked what all those marks are from. The dolphins like to play with each other. Sometimes they get mad at each other and actually bite leaving the marks on their skin.

At the end of the hour, you were pushed by your feet by two dolphins. I couldn't believe how fast they can make you go.

After swimming with the dolphins it is so sad to see that some are caught in fishing nets and killed by accident. They are amazing creatures. If you have a chance to swim with them, do it! It is worth every penny and is a once in a lifetime experience.

The Kilimanjaro Ambition

Rising abruptly from the Tanzania plain, Mount Kilimanjaro (5,892 m) is an awe-inspiring sight. A climb of Kilimanjaro is a rewarding adventure, taking you to the roof of Africa. Depending on the pace of your group and the route plotted, it's possible to get to the Uhuru summit and back within five days, staying overnight in huts and camps on the mountain. But trek durations vary. For example, the Lemosho route takes between 6 and 8 days and the Marangu route takes between 5 and 6, depending on the rest days incorporated.

The idea that Kilimanjaro trekking routes can be completed in five days (rather than seven or eight) is part of the reason why so many summit attempts fail. Guides frequently have to tell people on a Kilimanjaro trekking holiday to slow down, since ambition and over-exertion can make the difference between reaching the summit or not. It's worth considering: why rush anyway? Taking a slower approach on a Kilimanjaro climb will be less tiring and consequently more enjoyable. A steadier pace is more likely to lead to a successful summit, as well as giving you more time in a beautifully foreign environment.

The importance of acclimatisation cannot be overstated. People react differently to the unfamiliar conditions at altitude, and even very fit people might experience symptoms like headaches and nausea. The key is to take things gradually on a Kilimanjaro climb, incorporating time to for your body to adapt.

Approaching Kilimanjaro from the East is the Marangu trail. This is the oldest and one of the easier routes, and consequently it has a well-established infrastructure to assist climbers. However, its popularity can be detrimental to the experience; known as the 'Coca Cola' route, the huts along the Marangu sometimes struggle to accommodate the traffic. Some claim its scenery is not as interesting as on other Kilimanjaro trekking routes.

The Machame "Whisky" route is also very popular. It approaches Kilimanjaro from the south and then turns east towards the summit. This is more difficult than the Marangu and takes longer, but trekking Kilimanjaro via this route brings the rewards of beautiful forests and great views of the glaciers on the south face.

If you are able to commit more time to your trekking Kilimanjaro adventure, the Lemosho route is recommended. It takes longer than the other routes and is by no means easy, but its gradual approach, with more rest stops and steadier acclimatization makes reaching the summit successfully more likely. Furthermore, this route is newer and less used than the others and is relatively unspoiled.

Lemosho approaches from the west. Trekking Kilimanjaro via this route provides you with views of the mountain from a variety of angles, taking you through forests with alpine flowers and along a ridge past a collapsed volcanic crater: a stunning scenic trek.

Whitby, The Jewel of Yorkshire, Coast 2 Coast Bike Ride

Having cycled 202 miles Coast to Coast, it came as a pleasant surprise to arrive in the seaside town of Whitby.

Our team of 8 adventurers were bowled over by the traditional beauty and the cosmopolitan modernity dwelling side by side in this, the Jewel of Yorkshire. Passing through Lakes, Dales and Moors we encountered scenes of dramatic natural beauty, taking in three National Parks along the way we saw some truly breathtaking vistas.

All of this culminated in a long winding road race into Whitby on the third day of our North Yorkshire expedition. By the time we reached our destination - the Whitby coast - we were more than ready for some refreshment. And where better to seek some fine ale than the harbour side watering hole the Shambles.

Just as promised on the grueling days ride we found some of the finest real ales in Yorkshire, a fine selection of India Pale Ale, stout and moonshine, a truly impressive and inviting prospect. We wasted no time in order in a round of the local brew and before long the beer was flowing and the tales growing taller, good times and banter aplenty.

Needless to say that after of what some would call an intoxicating session of beers it was time to sample a bite to eat. Whitby being a famous sea port for many hundreds of years was clearly a place of tradition and nostalgia, offering up some of the best fish and chips available in the United Kingdom.

Yet the casual cool of the modern European eateries lining the streets throughout the town had there appeal, it would have been rude not to have indulged in this classic British dish. Feast we did on the piles of golden chips and delicately battered and lightly fried cod as many a drunken sailor and indeed tourist had done before us.

There is something very special about Whitby. A quaintly old fashioned appearance gives a deceptive cover to the contemporary dining and café culture that has swept through the historic streets. Step out for an evening in Whitby and you could just as easily be strolling though the streets of any of Europe's best known capital cities.

Whitby is a hidden gem that has managed to preserve its charm and heritage in a traditional way with cobbled streets and the Swing Bridge really adding to the character of a place that has remained unspoilt by tourism and the passing of time.

Whitby in a remarkable feat has managed to combine the old with the new seamlessly to keep the old guard happy in familiar surroundings whilst attracting a new generation of visitors for the future. And with a calendar of events strong enough to compete with any major tourist destination Whitby can entice the intrepid and intrigued explorer alike.

We were moved by the way that Whitby delivered a quintessentially English seaside experience in a modern and youthful way. A real must visit destination that we will certainly return to. Even if just to sample the fantastic fish and chips once again! And so we were away. After one brief but brilliant night in Whitby we were on our travels again heading for the delights of Robin Hoods bay and the contemplation of the journey home.

Lachen to Green Lake Trek
On this trail of Sikkim trekking expedition, one has to pass through vast tracts in dense forests, covered by several species of flora and faun. Rhododendrons and Pine trees cover the entire trekking region along with several colourful flowers. There are also many waterfalls and streams on the way.

This trek in Sikkim starts from Lachen and one has to trek through Zema, Tallem, Jakthang, Yabuk before finally reaching Green Lake, located at an altitude of 4,935 meters above sea level. Beautiful views of mountain peaks like Kanchenjunga, Siniolchu and Simvu makes this trip really enjoyable to nature lovers. The months from April to June and from September to November are best to enjoy this Sikkim trekking expedition.

Uttarey to Kanchenjunga Trek

Uttarey, a small village located near to Nepal border, is the starting point of this trekking expedition. The trail passes through dense Rhododendron forests from Chewabhanjang, Dhor, Paharey Megu, Dophe Pass, Gomathang, Panding, Dzongri, Thansing, Samity Lake and reach Gocha La, the highest point at an altitude of 4.940 meters above sea level.

On this trek, one has to pass through rugged terrains amid dense forests covered with Pine trees, where different varieties of colourful birds can be spotted every now and then. These jungles are also habitated by some of the rare species of wild animals. View of green meadows and surrounding snow laden peaks makes trekkers more energetic to reach their final destination.

With an altitude of 6.675 meters above sea level, Mount Kailash has remained a place of pilgrim from the past hundred of years. The beautiful Mansarovar lake is also located in Mount Kailash, which is also considered holy by both Buddhists and Hindus.

Shigatse or Xigatse

Shigatse is one of the major towns of Tibet Himalayas located in South-West at an altitude of 12,600 feet, where Yarlung Tsangpo river is joined by Nyangchu River. It is the main centre for distribution of animal husbandry and agriculture products.

It is also famous because of the location of one of the age old beautiful Buddhist monasteries. One can purchase Tibetan handicrafts, corals, turquoise, daggers, Yak butter and Chinese porcelain from the local market.

Zhangmu

With an altitude of 7,000 feet above sea level, Zhangmu is also known as Khasa by local Tibetans. The hilly terrains of Zhangmu are heavily wooded by different species of high altitude trees and a number of gushing waterfalls make this Himalayan region in Tibet one of the most enchanting places to visit. Let Me Whet Your Appetite - Consider Going on a Very Special Unique Adventure

Many are always looking for something different. There are those who would appreciate a unique and different type of holiday or vacation from what they may have been used to, and they may not wish to risk what is suggested here. There can be various reasons for considering it a risk. Let me deal with these.

It has been a longing in my heart to lead a small group to what is called the Holy Land; to Israel. In a few minds thoughts of it being all religious arise. Such thoughts can be dispelled immediately.

Over the years it has been my privilege to lead groups of around thirty people to Israel, and I have led a Leader's party where those travelling were being introduced to the land, to lead their own tours and pilgrimages.

If you, and a few of your friends, have always wanted to visit Jerusalem and Galilee then perhaps this is the right time.

What is involved and what might be the itinerary?

We fly to Tel Aviv and would be met by a coach, or people carrier, suitable for the size of the party, and having come through the airport formalities and collecting our luggage the party would be driven up to Jerusalem. Normally, I have stopped just outside the city to give people the time to reflect upon where they are going. One ought not to rush into Jerusalem.

The hotel to which we would be going is central, situated, opposite the Damascus Gate, and convenient for visiting significant sites in the heart of Jerusalem. The Old City walls are right across the road from the hotel lounge. The rooms are comfortable and the food is good and the staff so welcoming and friendly.

By the way, the hotel is right next to Golgotha and Calvary and The Garden Tomb is adjacent.

There are certain places one has to and should visit. Our driver would take us around the walls of the Old City on the first morning to familiarise everyone with the geographical lay-out, before driving to the summit of the Mount of Olives overlooking the old and new city.

If I may be allowed a personal comment, I think it is the best sight I have seen in the whole world. When I have mentioned this previously to larger parties no-one has challenged or disagreed. The view seems to imprint itself on one's memory.

Walking down the slopes of the Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane evokes various emotions, because this is the identical routed down which Jesus Christ rode on Palm Sunday. There is no other path!

Then it is off to Bethlehem, which lies six miles to the south of Jerusalem, and to the Shepherd's Fields, and later, to explore the compact streets of the Old City itself and to visit perhaps on more than one occasion the Wailing or Western Wall. Of course, not all this on the first day!

The Memorial to the Holocaust at Yad Vashem is a must, and then to view the model of the Temple adds to the rich tapestry of our adventure.

Jericho, Qumran at the north end of the Dead Sea, the ascent of Masada by cable car and a swim in the Dead Sea can be easily done in one day. That has invariably been a highlight of the visit for many.

Following a week in bustling Jerusalem it is up north some 80 miles to Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee, and the more than comfortable Ron Beach Hotel with its superb cuisine is right on the shoreline.

From there we visit the Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum, the majestic Mount Hermon in the north of Israel, and the River Jordan.

Our route north can include a visit to a diamond factory, where there is always someone who buys!

The picturesque Caesarea, by the Mediterranean Sea, with its ancient and so well preserved theatre can also be part of our plans.

No, it is not all go! I usually have two rest days if that is what people wish, but should they want to visit another salient site I will take them.

Relaxing evenings are filled with walks to the King David Hotel for coffee, or for ice cream at bustling Ben Yehuda Street, and that is when so many questions just tumble out from people.

Moreover, a visit to these regions will give you a chance to discover the fascinating and incredibly hospitable Berber culture as well as some of the most impressive and beautiful Kasbahs in the world, especially around the Ouarzazate region, also known as 2The Land of the Thousand Kasbahs".
