Horse Safari Game Ride in the Eastern Cape of South Africa

On one of my trips to South Africa we decided to do something a little bit different and went on a Horse Safari Game Ride. Fish River Horse Safaris are based just outside Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape.

When you arrive you are met by one of the guides who takes you through to get you all kitted out. Rider safety is taken quite seriously here and proper hard riding hats have to be worn. You then gather round to be allocated your horse.

This is good chance to meet your fellow riders and to ascertain what level of experience everyone has at riding. Fortunately we are all in pretty much the same boat and there are no expert riders.

The guides are very helpful and they pick out a suitable horse for you based upon your height and weight and competency. All the horses look extremely well looked after and are very good natured.

We had chosen to do a Game Ride which lasts approximately 2.5 hours however you can choose to do a mixture of a Beach and Game Ride (its next on my list when I go back). The additional beach ride aspect takes you down through the dunes and onto a secluded beach where you can ride through the glorious sea.

We set off on our Game Ride trip and at the start it's all about getting to know your horse and making sure you feel comfortable. The guides, although young, are very helpful and experienced. We head off through the reserve, up and down a few hills before reaching open grassland where we let the horses exercise a bit and soon we are galloping along.

Now I am no expert so galloping takes a bit of mastering but if you don't mind the bouncing up and down and are game for a laugh you will really enjoy yourself. We are soon riding through thick valley bushveld and open plains and spotting buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buck, impala and duiker. The guides help us to spot various animals and ensure we do not disturb them.

I had two highlights on my ride. The first was being able to get really close to a group of giraffe who really didn't mind us. Some great photos were taken by our group. It's so nice to be able to experience the complete tranquillity as opposed to groups of jeeps or minibuses dashing about. This is a whole new experience. My second highlight was spotting the rhino.

Of course we had to be very careful as they have a very acute sense of smell and we maintained a good distance but it was amazing to sit on the horse and watch three rhino in the field ahead. I can't pretend that my bottom wasn't a little tender the following day but it was well worth it and I will be going back to try the beach and game ride next time.

Hiking With a Family

Hiking is a fun activity that an entire family can enjoy together. Children of any age are able to actively participate on a hike. It provides much needed exercise for children and adults alike. It also gives the family an opportunity to enjoy nature and learn about the surrounding environment.

How to find a hiking trail

For people who are are not familiar with their local hiking trails, there are many resources that provide help. One of the best resources is the Internet. Try searching for hiking or hiking trails and the name of the city.

City government websites also usually have useful resources. There should be a list of trails available online or over the phone through the Parks and Recreation department of the local government, or some other related department.

How to choose amongst the offerings

When choosing where to go hiking, gauge the abilities of the family members who will be participating. Many online sites listing hiking trails will describe how difficult the hike is and have reviews from people who have been on those hikes. For people not used to hiking, start with an easy hike. The easiest hikes tend to be shorter than two miles, with very little change in elevation.

For families with young children, stick to hikes less than one mile long. For very young children, be prepared to carry them, or choose a trail that is stroller accessible. For people who are planning to hike frequently with very young children, there are backpacks for carrying children that can be very helpful.

What to bring

The most important thing to bring is enough water. Some trails have drinking fountains, but that is relatively rare. Frequently, all require water must be carried in. It is usually best to overestimate how much water is needed. Especially in dry areas, dehydration is a serious risk.

It is usually not considered safe to drink out of local sources of water, such as rivers or lakes. Water sources may be polluted with chemicals, and may also contain harmful bacteria. Drinking unclean water can cause very severe reactions.

If the family is accompanied by a dog, they need to first make sure dogs are allowed in the hiking area. Dogs usually love to go hiking, but require their own set of supplies. Bring bags to clean up after the dog.

Most hiking trails require that dogs remain on a leash during the hike, and this is safest both for the dog and for other hikers and dogs on the trail. Dogs also need their own supply of water. They are equally liable to become dehydrated, and can't say so if they are. Be sure to be aware of how the dog is feeling during the hike.

Wildlife Adventures - Spotting the Vanishing Proboscis Monkey

The rare and unique Proboscis Monkey is found only in the coastal areas of Borneo, in mangrove and diterocarp forests and in the lowland rainforests near fresh water and rivers. Less than 3000 Proboscis monkeys remain today and they are fast on their way to extinction due to logging and deforestation.

This reddish-brown monkey has a large pot belly and a tail as long as its body, but its most distinctive feature is its long nose, giving it its unique appearance, as well as its name. The male Proboscis is much larger than the female, as is its nose, which often hangs down over its mouth.

The nose is a prominent feature in the primates' life style. It stands out straight and acts as a resonator when the monkey vocalizes, making loud honking sounds when it senses danger, and pushing it aside in order to feed; it swells and turns red when the Proboscis is excited or angry, and it is a hindrance when the creature is wounded as it cannot lick itself clean.

Proboscis Monkeys depend on the mangroves near the rivers for resting and sleeping, so that they generally venture no further than 600 m. from the river's edge. These specialized plant eaters feed only on young leaves from Borneo trees, seeds and green starchy fruits.

Their unique digestive systems and are divided into compartments filled with cellulose digesting bacteria which enable them to digest leaves and seeds and neutralize toxins, and give them their pot belly appearance They are the only mid-sized mammal with this ability living in the forest's canopy.

Living in groups averaging in size from 12-32 animals and sometimes as many as 60, Proboscis Monkeys have a unique two-level social system. One level includes all-male groups comprised of infant, adolescent and adult monkeys; a second level is made up of several groups of harems, each led by a separate male, who come together to form a troop.

Since these monkeys are neither territorial nor aggressive, smaller groups join together to form larger troops that overlap in territory. They avoid deforested areas and human settlement.

Proboscis Monkeys display the limber grace of a primate well-suited to life in trees. There graceful animals swing through the air from tree to tree, and leap from branch to branch.

Their webbed back feet enable them to walk in mangrove areas and swim proficiently and silently without arousing river predators. Their imposing tails are used to balance while clambering, careening and crashing around the forest.

This flamboyant primate is best observed from late afternoon to night, this being its greatest time of activity.

One of the best places to observe the Proboscis in on wilderness tours sailing down the Menanggol River, one of Kinabatangan River's tributaries, where Proboscis monkey watching tours are available. Indeed, the only place to still see these spectacular creatures is in their natural habitat, the rapidly disappearing mangrove forests of Borneo.

It is rustic and a nourishing meal. The was a traditional dish of the Kikuyu tribe and incorporating a meat protein was not always necessary as meat was scarce in tribal life so it was mostly eaten vegetarian, but the beans provided most of the protein in this dish. Give it a try along with some Chapati bread and rice and you will love it.

A Bird's Eye View While Walking Peru

From the lost city of the Incas, to the shores of Lake Titicaca, walking Peru's landscapes is truly the best way to see the wonders of the country. But if your weary feet need a day's respite, why not get a bird's eye view of Peru?

Hot Air Ballooning
A few miles south of the Incan capital, Cusco, and below the ancient city of Macchu Picchu, you will find the Sacred Valley. Bursting at the seams with things to do and places to explore, the Valley is an essential stop on any itinerary devoted to walking Peru's best bits.

Life in the valley today, is for many inhabitants not so very different from what it would have been all those years ago when it was the heart of Incan civilisation. Both Cusco and the Sacred Valley are filled with archaeological remains that will fascinate anyone with an interest in Incan traditions.

But to really appreciate the Sacred Valley and its surrounding scenery, why not see it from above by taking a hot air balloon ride? Lasting about an hour, flights allow you to take in views of the peaks of Sacantay, Veronica, Pumahuanka and Ausangate setting a relaxing and laidback pace as you drift through the sky.

A Light Aircraft
A hot air balloon is certainly an extraordinary way to travel, but a flying basket may not be everyone's cup of tea. If you prefer the idea of wings and an engine, then seeing the sights from the comfort of a light aircraft might be just the thing for you.

Flights are about an hour long and allow you to enjoy many of the most incredible Incan sights. These include places like Tipon, Pikillagta, the Urubamba Valley and not to mention the lost city of the Inca's - Machu Picchu. Let someone else do all the hard work as you're taken to some of the best views you are likely to see whilst you're in Peru.

A great deal quieter than a helicopter ride, and minus the windchill factor of a hot air balloon, a light aircraft gives you the chance to see the sights more comfortably than you would do walking. Peru's landmarks are just as impressive from above after all.

Paragliding
If you want a bird's eye view of Peru but you think a hot air balloon or an aeroplane might be just a little bit too tame for you, then you're probably the perfect candidate for Peruvian paragliding.

Fly from mountain sites all over the Andes, or for something a little different to the areas you've been walking, Peru's Costa Verde in Lima is the perfect place for paragliding. Take off from the spectacular cliff tops of Chorrillos, affording yourself a fantastic view of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean as you descend.

So, don't wear out your feet while you're in the Incan lands as there are plenty of ways of seeing the sights other than walking. Peru's rich and diverse cultural history is evident throughout the country, and as much so from a bird's eye view as from any other perspective.

Educational Vacations - Learning Has Never Been This Much Fun

Sometimes you walk away from a vacation a little bit smarter than when you left. Some cringe at the thought of learning something on their vacation time, but don't expect to feel like you're stuck in a classroom.

These types of vacations are enjoyable, engaging, and will have you leaving with a little more knowledge under your belt. Although a week laying on the beach definitely has its perks, you walk away with little more than a sunburn.

All sorts of locations around the globe present opportunities for learning, and getting your passport is easy online. From helping you get your first time passport expedited to putting in more pages, online service is easy.

When on vacation, try to get rid of all outside distractions that can detract from your learning experience. Things like cell phones and other electronics make it hard to become a natural part of the atmosphere.

Getting a little caught up in the surroundings helps teach a little bit about those around you, as well as yourself. Try authentic food and visit historically and culturally important places. This will not only give you and your family a good time, it will help them learn.

Also consider who you will travel with if you're planning an educational vacation. Believe it or not, this can drastically enhance your vacation experience. Companies like International Expeditions are traveling groups that go all over the world.

These groups are led by historians and naturalists, ensuring that you are getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse into some of the most mysterious places in the world. By offering a look behind the surface aesthetic of a location, you can see the heart and soul of a particular place.

Our world contains so many different cultures, and learning about them can be very fun and even more rewarding. There are tons of different types of people who live in every corner of the globe, and meeting them can be so rewarding.

Learning their customs, dining on their unique cuisine, and experiencing their ways of life has the power to grant a whole new perspective to how you see the world. Taking the time to download a US passport renewal form from online gets you closer to making some new international pals.

Educational travel shouldn't evoke memories of sitting in a classroom. Learning something you've always wanted to do is a great way to experience a nation and its people.

Learn to ride an elephant in Thailand, learn to make wine in the famous vineyards of Italy, or become a world-class chef in France. Take a fun art class, adventurous mountain climbing classes, or even learn to ride a horse.

The Gold Coast - Where Everybody's Welcome!

The Gold Coast is well known around the world as a holiday destination. It sits comfortably in South East Queensland (QLD), the second-largest state of Australia or 'Downunder'. Our state is certainly pretty big - just look at the map. 1.72 million Square kilometres!

The largest ocean in the world, the Pacific Ocean, forms our coastline and it's warm all year round. We are certainly very lucky to experience mostly warm or hot weather. People love to live in 'The Sunshine State', and their desire is what has made Queensland the fastest growing state in Australia.

Our capital is Brisbane, centred on the Brisbane River, named after Sir Thomas Brisbane - a former governor of New South Wales. The city is quite hilly and very pretty. The CBD is only 2.2 square kilometres. Small enough for you to just walk around and enjoy it.

The state of Queensland was named after Queen Victoria, and because we are a former British colony, many of the streets are named after royal family members. Brisbane has a few freeways and one of them is the Pacific Motorway. If you follow this route to the south, for about 80 kilometres, you will discover - let me brag just a little - the absolute best place for living and holidaying - the GOLD COAST.

With 55 kilometres of white sandy beaches there are also nine times more waterways to navigate, than in Venice - both natural and man-made. How about that! The overall area of the Gold Coast is 1,400 square kilometres, with a natural area of 25,000 hectares. The Gold Coast city itself is only 50 years old - which, for a city, is quite young indeed.

The Gold Coast is one of the greenest cities in Australia, with 13,000 species of animals and 1,750 species of plants living and growing amongst us. We have 2,245 parks within our residential and commercial developments that are expanding in every direction. We are growing.

The city itself is not the only thing that is young, our population is young too. Our median age is only 40 years, and most of us work inside the boundaries of Gold Coast City.

We are also famous for volunteer work, particularly during many major events. We are mostly employed in the Retail Trade, Construction, Accommodation & Food Services, Health Care & Social Assistance, Manufacturing, and Education & Training industries.

Around 133,000 of us drive our own, or family-owned cars, which makes us very mobile. More than 100,000 households are connected to the internet - making us well informed.

Approximately 30,000 of us migrated from other countries. Though many of us were born here, our parents and grandparents migrated from all over the World. Their native cultures, traditions and customs have gradually integrated and created the Australian culture as we know it now. We are truly a multicultural society.

How do we live? Mostly outdoors - thanks to the pleasant subtropical climate. We love our outside diners situated next to swimming pools, spas and canals. We love going out to restaurants and cafes to taste cuisine from all over the world.

We drink the cleanest water from the taps, enjoy the best seafood, the freshest fruit and vegetables, and we sip the best wine from Australian and international producers. We are a very smiley and friendly bunch of Gold-Coasters, and we love to share our luck with our guests and visitors.

Come and enjoy our famous 'laid back' and easy lifestyle. We will welcome you with some of the best sport events and entertainment all year around. Take into consideration the good news - we also have two airports, which make it so easy for you to reach your destination.

If you are a food lover, we have got more than 500 restaurants to choose from. If you love golf, there are 40 golf courses just waiting for you. Don't you worry - we have high class infrastructure and world class accommodation to suit any taste and financial capacity.

Resorts, hotels, holiday houses, caravan and camping sites, bed and breakfast's, farm stays, motels, holiday apartments, backpacker's accommodations, retreats, cabins and cottages. Whatever you like! We have it all.

If you are a true lover of nature - the Gold Coast is the place to be and explore. We have forests of Antarctic beech trees and wooded hills, as well as the World Heritage listed 'Lamington National Park' with the largest reserve of pristine sub-tropical rainforest.

Our spectacular Mount Tambourine is a true geological phenomenon with rich volcanic soils, breathtaking scenery and waterfalls. It is full of lorikeets, scrub turkeys, wallabies, owls, lyrebirds and platypus - and that's just for starters. In the afternoon, you can relax in one of the many wineries, restaurants or cafes, or go straight to the unique art and craft galleries - you will be amazed!

If you want to see for yourself where native Kangaroo Paw plants are grown for export, go and explore Numinbah Valley by horseback. If peaceful walking trails are more your thing - take a walk amongst the clouds, or through the Natural Arch to see the glow worm cave in Springbrook National Park. It is truly a beautiful place, with a reputation of some of the most fantastic waterfalls, and a number of short and long walking trails.

For evening and night time entertainment, we are certainly prepared as well. We love it, and there is so much to choose from. Boy, oh boy! It's party time forever once you get here. Take your time to look around. Fulfil your own desires and imagination.

You will need to stay here for as many days as possible to be able to experience our wonderful lifestyle. It is better if you are able to spend two, three or even four weeks here because you will find so much to see and do. The Gold Coast is great for everyone - from a single explorer to a couple, a group of friends or a whole family.

We are also a city of theme parks, and each of them has a full day program for your entertainment. Just minutes away from each other, we have Warner Brothers Movie World, Sea World, Wet'n'Wild Water World, Dreamworld and Whitewater World. If I tried to describe everything they offer I would have to write a whole book about it.

Since 1947, known originally as Currumbin Bird Sanctuary and renamed in 1995 to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled within 27 hectares of lush green rainforest we have our famous wildlife park, just 20 minutes from the CBD.

Would you like to meet face-to-face with over 1,400 individual animals and birds? Are you excited to cuddle a cute and fluffy koala? Then go for it, start planning your trip. You will be pleasantly surprised at the world's largest collection of Australian animals and birds in one place.

Have you heard about Tropical Fruit World? An interesting tourist attraction, featuring a huge variety of some of the world's most yummy and exotic, fruit. Well, it is just next door to our city. We locals, take our guests to this amazing place, to thrill their tastebuds.

You can spend most of your day there and have a lot of fun going around exploring the vast plantation safaris, or take a jungle boat cruise or mini train rides. You will also be able to learn the names of many exotic fruits and try them during the fruit tasting show.

If you are looking for the best place in the world to enjoy your holiday, you must come to the Gold Coast.

From every angle, it is the most attractive place to be. Start planning your trip 'Downunder'. You are welcome to surf with us, have a cup of coffee with us, dance in nightclubs together, share our best parks, fishing and hiking with us, and experience our sporting events.

We love to play sport all year round and the variety and number of events we have on the Gold Coast is just staggering. Our sport calendar is constantly growing and evolving.

We have golf, tennis, surfing competitions, horse racing, car racing, bodybuilding, triathlons, cross-country bushwalking and regattas. Every two years we also host the Pan Pacific Masters Games, and many more events are coming every day.

Hike America - The Everglades

Pa-Hy-Okee is what the Miccosukee Indians named the area that is now known as The Everglades. The word means Grassy Waters. In the 1940s, they were given another moniker by General Stoneman Douglas, who wanted to attract public attention to preserve the area.

He called them The River of Grass. Finally, the twenty-two thousand mile area was declared Everglades State Park in 1947.

The Everglades is a fifty-mile-wide freshwater river that empties into Florida Bay in the Gulf of Mexico and possesses a depth of only a few inches at any point. The area is home to a variety of interesting flora, such as slash pines, dwarf cypress trees, and unique species of palm trees.

But, the real treats are the fauna who make this land egrets home. Egrets, herons, various other waterbirds, both white and brown pelicans, roseate spoonbills, ospreys, bald eagles, Cape Sable sparrows, short-tailed hawks, peregrine falcons, and Florida mangrove cuckoos, raccoons, opossums, skunks, armadillos, American alligators, Florida panthers, a rare species of crocodile, round-tail muskrats, and many turtle species can be observed by visitors to the park.

Since hiking is the best way to experience this place, there are a number of trails. The Slash Pine and Loop Trails cut through an area of the high pinelands and feature over two-hundred distinct species of plants.

Thirty of these have never been found anywhere else on the face of the planet. A great feature of these easy trails is that, if they receive permission from the park ranger, hikers can actually set up camp on them.

Hikers looking for a more strenuous trail will want to try the Coastal Prairie Trail. Stretching fifteen miles, this trail is about twice as long as the Slash Pine Trail. Unlike Slash Pine and Loop, kiers can camp on this trail without receiving the permission of the park ranger, but only at Clubhouse Beach.

Clubhouse Beach Sits at the end of the trail and still boasts the foundation of a clubhouse that was built in 1912. Campers should be aware that this site does not have many facilities and has no potable water.

The Everglades National Park is a great place to hike and reason enough for travelers to take holidays to Miami

Animal Encounters Whilst Walking South Africa

Whilst walking South Africa's wonderful paths and trails, you will see all manner of wildlife, from the smallest of blue crane birds to the largest of elephants. Seeing these animals in their natural habitat will take your breath away; however if you're looking for a real animal encounter, there are ways to get just a little bit closer!

Riding an elephant
There's no denying the fact that you'll see more of the country if you're on foot and walking. South Africa does, however, tend to look very different from on top of an elephant. Far less work than using your own two feet, and more importantly far more fun, an elephant ride is a great way to see the country from a different perspective.

It is also something of a special opportunity as the temperament of the African elephant is very different from that of Asian elephants ridden in areas such as Thailand.

Not all can be ridden, however, there are some places where it is possible not only to ride African elephants, but also to groom them, walk trunk in hand with them, and feed them their meals. To get close to one of South Africa's finest animals, and to see the country from a different vantage point, taking a ride on an elephant is a must.

Swimming with Penguins
When we think of South Africa, penguins are not necessarily the first animals that spring to mind. Hardly one of the Big Five, the small African penguin is admittedly not the first animal you would think of seeing, however it is certainly one you are likely to come across whilst walking South Africa.

During your visit, make sure you head to Boulders Beach near Cape Town where you will find a whole colony of the bouncy birds.

Energetic and playful, they are a lot of fun to be around, and they are more than likely to try to make friends with you while you are swimming. Very used to people being around, the birds will not hesitate to act naturally around you giving you the perfect opportunity to see them feeding, preening and swimming in their natural environment.

Ride an Ostrich
For an animal experience that's out of the ordinary, be sure to head out towards Oudtshoorn to do some walking. South Africa's largest ostrich population can be found out in that direction, thanks to the slightly dry and desert-like feel to the region.

With ostrich farms that hold regular ostrich racing for riders of any level, there's nothing stopping you from having a go at becoming an ostrich jockey.

If however, your balance leaves a lot to be desired at the best of times, it might be best to stick to the sidelines and watch others attempt to ride the ungainly animals. Spending time at an ostrich farm is always a great day out and if you're feeling lucky you might even want to put a penny or two towards a flutter on your favourite ostrich.

Saving the Best 'til Last - Girl Power on the Annapurna Circuit

The Annapurna circuit takes you to the foot of one of the 14 highest peaks in the world - Mount Annapurna - and on April 26th 2010 one young woman made history by becoming the first female climber ever to conquer all 14 of those peaks, saving Mount Annapurna, the highest point of the Annapurna Massif, until last.

The History Books
The first of the 14 mountains whose peaks rise above 8,000 meters ever to be climbed, Mount Annapurna was first scaled by members of a French expedition led by Maurice Herzog in June, 1950. Standing at 8,091 metres, Mount Annapurna is not only the highest point in the region of the famous Annapurna circuit trek, but it is also the tenth highest mountain in the world.

Not far behind, Edmund Hillary proceeded to climb Mount Everest, the tallest of the 14 highest peaks, becoming the first person to reach the summit in May, 1953. Just a year later, in July 1954, Italian mountaineers Lacedelli and Compagnoni achieved the first ever climb of the second highest (and some would argue the most challenging) mountain in the world, K2.

And so, an era of Himalayan mountaineering was born. With the completion of the first climb up Tibet's Shisha Pangma - in 1964, all 14 of the highest peaks were then conquered.

Oh Eun-Sun's Story
Oh Eun-Sun, a 44 year-old from South Korea, made history in April 2010, just 13 years after she climbed her first of the highest peaks, when she became the twenty-first climber to have completed all 14 mountains. Oh's journey began in 1997 with the climbing of Gasherbrum, also known to many as K4 - the first of the over eight-thousand metre mountains she had climbed.

In 2004 she went on to conquer Everest, however it was not until she climbed K2 in 2007 that Oh started to really focus on her goal. Completing an astonishing 8 more of the 14 peaks in the space of just 4 months in 2009, she was then left with only one more mountain standing between her and a world record.

Saving the Best 'Til Last
The arrival of 2010 left Oh Eun-Sun with just one more peak to master, and April saw her heading off to the Annapurna Circuit to complete her challenge. Good weather aided her in her challenge and on the 26th April, Oh was pictured firmly planting the South Korean flag atop of Mount Annapurna, thus completing her mission and successfully making her the first woman ever to have achieved the climbing of all 14 over-8,000 metre mountains.

A Tarnished Victory
Unfortunately Oh's time on the Annapurna Circuit was tarnished slightly with questions raised by a fellow climber concerning her summit of Mount Kanchengjunga in 2009.

Rival climber Pasaban, who had hoped to claim the record for herself by climbing both Mount Annapurna and Shisha Pangma consecutively, states that photographs of Oh supposedly taken on the summit of Kanchengjunga show rocks, rather than the snow that has appeared in the photos of other climbers who conquered the summit in the same year.

However, as Oh's ascent of Kanchengjunga remains in the Himalayan database, she remains able to claim her title as the first female to climb all 14 mountains measuring above 8,000 meters.

Backpacking Southeast Asia - Getting Around Thailand

Are you thinking of backpacking Thailand? Here is some information on the different modes of travel throughout Thailand.

General: Getting around Thailand is very simple. Often, there are numerous ways to reach the same destination. The cost of travel is fairly cheap when compared to North America or European equivalent. All modes of travel in Thailand are also safe for tourists.

Train: Thailand has a vast train network. The primary lines that travelers would use are North-South line, a North East line, and the South East Line. Most major tourists destinations, such as Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Surat Thani (To catch Ferries to Ko Samui, and Ko Pha-Ngan) fall on/near the North-South Line. The North-South line can also be taken into Malaysia.

The North East line has less tourist destinations on it, but it does connect to Nong Khai for access into Laos.

The South East line is primarily used for access to the Cambodia, however, most travelers take the bus on this route.

Train travel is relatively cheap and they are reliable for the most part. There are overnight trains on some portions of the trip, with sleeper berths.

Bus: The majority of travelers to Thailand use the bus to get from destination to destination. You can get to almost every mainland destination by means of public bus. Again, costs for bus are relatively cheap and reliable.

Boats: There are a few type of boats used for travel in Thailand, Ferries, Long tail's, and small passenger boats. Some of the more popular routes, such as Surat Thani to Ko Samui have large passenger ferries. On some of the smaller routes, a small passenger boat is used to shuttle between the island and mainland. These boats typically hold about 50 people.

While on the islands, some places on the mainland are hard to access by land, so instead most tourists take Long Tail boats. Long Tail boats are like a large canoe with an engine attached to it and hold 10-15 people.. These boats are used in places such as Ko Pha-Ngan to reach other beaches on the island.

Airplane: Over the years, more and more destinations in Thailand have become accessible by commercial air travel. Now, most major tourist centers, such as Phuket, Ko Samui, Chiang Mai, and Krabi can be reached by air. Air travel in Thailand is also cheap due to the amount of discount airliners operating within the region. Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, offer discount service to most the major tourist centers.

The Last Wilderness Frontier - Vacation Adventures in Sabah

To visit Sabah is to discover another side of Malaysian Borneo. This frontier state is a great place to indulge in wildlife adventures in nature's delights; it provides natural and cultural highlights of every kind - from caves, reefs, forest and mountains to tribal peoples.

Perched on the edge of the South China Sea, Sabah's capital, Kota Kinabalu is a modern, city less than 50 years old.

To the backdrop of the jungle clad hills of the Crocker Range and the cloud-shrouded peaks of Mt. Kinabalu in the far distance, the city sprawls out along the coast, overlooking a cluster of islands.

This is the perfect destination for water sports adventures - snorkeling vacations, scuba diving trips, or just swimming in the crystal clear waters.

Sabah's majestic mountains, lush rainforests and undersea wonders provide an ideal nature playground. The Kinabalu National Park, a World Heritage site, is named after Malaysia's highest peak and the third highest in Southeast Asia. Marine sights include Turtle Islands National Park and Sipidan Island, one of Asia's best diving destinations.

The state's indigenous tribes, with their colorful, unique traditions, can still be found in hinterland towns such as Kudat, Tenom and Kata Belud.

Kinabalu National Park is one of Sabah's most popular outdoor adventure travel destinations with Mt. Kinabalu as its centerpiece. Considered one of the easiest mountains to climb, Mt. Kinabalu offers a range of opportunities for novice hikers, scramblers and rock-climbers.

It is a botanical paradise with over half the species growing above 900 m. and with walking trails which enable adventurers to enjoy the lush diterocarp rainforest, housing spectacular flowers including orchids, rhododendruns, the insect eating Nepenthes and the enormous Rafflesia.

From the Mountain's summit, the Philippines are visible from afar on a clear day. The park is also home to Poring Hot Springs, both a birdwatcher's haven and a source of sulphorous pools whose steaming waters are channeled into tubs where visitors can unwind following a trek to the mountain's peak.

In contrast to low-key Kota Kinabalu, distinctive Sandakan, a busy commercial center, is the entrance to the beautiful island-studded bay. Its real attractions lie in the surrounding areas, though the town is an excellent seafood center.

The area's marine attractions include Pulau Pengu National Park (Turtle Island National Park) and the Pulau Sipadan, one of the world's great dive destinations. Turtle Island comprises 3 small islands where green and hawksbill turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

These are then collected and placed in hatcheries, and are released back to the sea once the eggs hatch. Pulau Sipadan attracts experienced and novice divers from all over the world.

Diving here is amazing - the sea is teeming with colorful tropical fish and such rare species as the ghost pipefish, the frogfish and unusual species of shark. In addition, the island is home to over 15 species of turtles and the famous Turtle Cavern.

For wildlife, the lower Sungai Kinabatangan (Kinabatangan River) floodplain and the Datum Valley can't be beat. Here one finds wildlife sanctuaries with an astonishing variety of plants and a diversity of wildlife - over 200 species of trees, 110 mammals and indigenous animals including great rarities such as the Sumatran Rhino and the Clouded Leopard.

Canopy walks and jungle walks abound here as well. The highlight of any trip to Sabah is the Sepilak Rehabilitation Sanctuary where the lovable Orangutans are saved from extinction and taught to survive in the state's jungles.

Campervan Hire As an Alternative to a Package Holiday

As fashion changes the idea of campervan hire as an alternative to a package holiday is getting more and more acceptable.

There are many things to recommend a campervan holiday, it is perhaps a way of living and relaxing that has perhaps only just been noticed by the main stream. It is and idea whose time has come.

The package holiday was a wonderful thing, but of its time, when the world was a much more civilized place, airports weren't places where you had to penetrate layers of security just to go on a two week holiday to sit in the sun in Spain. You weren't forced to take your shoes off or be subjected to a full body scan, it was a more innocent time, but that was then.

A campervan allows you to take the comforts of home with you, start the ignition and choose any direction you see fit, the cardinal points of the compass matter not and the continent is only a short train or ferry ride away.

The only time you'll be sat in front of a screaming baby is if you choose to take your own, not flight cancellations or over-booked tours. You only have to look at the Icelandic volcano disruption to realize the sense in being able to travel under your own steam and not at the whim of some dust-fearing officials at the Met office.

The world is unfortunately not the same as when the package holiday seemed like a good idea, but these days there is so much to be said for hiring a campervan it really is obvious why more an more people are taking to the road in this fashion.

Kenya Safari Guide

Many people spend a considerable amount of money going to the same destinations on vacation. If you are bored with the same vacation routines and would like a different atmosphere and a bit of adventure on your next vacation, think about going on a Kenya Safari.

Many people have the wrong ideas about going on safari. They mostly think of images of Hollywood movies and danger. However, this is far from the truth.

There are many vacation packages to book a Kenya Safari. There are many online sites where you can book your trip, choose the locations you want to visit, and choose a safari provider as well. Some sites make it so easy to book your vacation that they are designed as a step-by-step user-friendly process.

The wildlife and the landscape that you are able to enjoy are one of the most important features of a Kenya Safari. East Africa has many ecosystems and with them, the opportunity of a lifetime to enjoy their beauty. There is a big variety on the flora and fauna of the area.

You will see savannas, deserts, coral reefs, dense forests, rivers, beaches, lakes, alpine meadows, elephants, lions, zebras, large vultures, the most beautiful butterflies, and much more - all depending on the area that you visit.

There are some interesting areas to visit as part of your Kenya Safari. The five top Kenya parks to visit include the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Sanburu Game Reserve, Amboseli National Park, Aberdares and Mt Kenya National Park, and Lake Nakuru National Park.

YOU can choose from different packages, which will include different stays and places to go. For example, you can book your safari for 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 days, and the locations will vary depending on the length of your trip.

Kenya is an excellent place to visit year-round. However, the months of July-August and December are the busiest, so it is important to book your safari ahead of time. Accommodations and the parks are crowded during those months. It is advisable to book 6-9 months in advance.

One of the reasons is that during the months of March-May you will experience heavy rains. It will be raining lighter during October-December. This leaves January and February as good times to visit. Many birds are migrating during that time and the sights and sounds will be amazing.

The climate on northern Kenya will be hot and dry, the coast is humid and hot, and the inland and dense areas have a cooler temperature since they are higher. It gets cooler during the night and morning time.

It is recommended to wear comfortable summer clothes year round. In addition, the hottest weather seems to be from February to March. July through August seem to be the coolest.

You will experience the wilder beast migration in the Masai Mara and many different cultures, some are villages that have not been modernized, and remain as they were. There are 42 villages, and Kenya has 59 national parks and reserves.

You can travel many ways - by camel, horse, air balloon, boat, Vehicle, and even bike. Kenya also has 38 golf courses, for the least adventurous - although wildlife is always near.

A Kenya Safari has much to offer, certainly an experience of a lifetime.

Even the tourists coming from other countries, love to go alongside the wild roses and Tibetan prayer flags. Markha River also adds to the beauty of the place. Going on a Trip Around the World

If you have been saving up for all your life to go on a trip around the world then you should know that there are some places that you shouldn't miss. This kind of holiday can be described as a real challenge but the satisfaction may be worth the sacrifice.

One of the sites that you shouldn't miss in your trip is the Iguazu Falls in Argentina/Brazil. Some people say that this waterfall is even more spectacular than Niagara Falls. When you get there you will see that they are actually two waterfalls that are spread over 2.7 kilometers.

Another place that you should visit is the Lost City of Machu Picchu, Peru. It is true that you will have to backpack until you reach the city but nobody that has visited it has complained in anyway.

The next stop should the Mayan ruins in Tikal, Guatemala. These ruins are buried deep down in the heart of the rainforest and specialists say that only a small part of them have actually been discovered so far.

Something else that you shouldn't miss are the Great Pyramids of Giza, Egypt. They are near Cairo, the capital of Egypt, very close to the city of Giza. What this means that you will not have to travel through the dessert to reach them.

The Great Wall of China is the path leading to the Forbidden City and it is something that you should visit in your trip around the world. You can go there by bus and also you have the possibility of going with a group. However, if you feel the need to meditate a bit you can take a walk all on your own.

These are just some of the things that are worth visiting. There are many places that we should see especially if we have the money to go on such a trip. But if this is not something that you can afford right now, then you should try to plan a holiday in the countryside, for example.

It might not quite as breathtaking as the Great Wall or the Pyramids but it is a way to relax and enjoy yourself.

Fraser Island and the Fraser Coast - Queensland, Australia

Fraser Island called K GARI by the Aboriginal people that have lived there for over 5500 years means paradise and is rich with Aboriginal culture. Heritage listed Fraser Island has evolved over 80,000,000 years and is a unique natural environment where rainforests grow in the sand.

This Island, is a pristine world heritage listed island and is the largest unconsolidated land mass or sand island in the world and is situated off the Fraser coast, a three hour drive north of Brisbane the capital of Queensland.

Fraser Island stretches over 123 kilometers in length and is approx 22 kilometers wide, with an area of approx 184,000 hectares. An amazing natural wonder.

An island of exceptional beauty, with long uninterrupted white sandy beaches, strikingly colored sand cliffs, and over a hundred fresh water crystal clear lakes, some so blue that the white sand stands out as a feature.

Ancient rainforests grow in sand along the banks of the clear fresh water streams of sand filtered water so pure and magical in taste.

This is the only sand island in the world to boast tall rainforests growing in the sand dunes some over 200 meters high, while the heaths on the low lands are of major ecological significance, providing magnificent wildflower displays during spring and summer. This sand island is also home to a pure strain of Australia's native dog the DINGO.

Getting to Fraser Island is an adventure in itself. Leaving Brisbane on the Bruce Highway heading north you pass through some beautiful country interspersed with cane and pine apple plantations, North of Noosa you have the opportunity to travel along the beach for approx eighty kilometers to Rainbow beach which gets it's name from the magnificent colors of the sand in the sand dunes and sandy cliffs.

From Rainbow Beach a short barge trip takes you across the sandy straits, which separates Fraser Island from the mainland. Once on Fraser Island all of your driving is done on sand so make sure you have the correct tyre pressures for sandy driving conditions. Fraser Island offers the traveler some awesome scenery and numerous bush camping sites are available.

If you are travelling during the Tailor season, which is in spring, Fraser Island becomes a bevy of activity with tailor fisher men descending on this tranquil destination for the tailor fishing season, making camping areas crowded.

The wet lands of Fraser Island are a must see for the bird and flora lovers as this is home to over 40,000 migratory birds and to rare and vulnerable species such as dugongs, turtles, illidge's ant blue butterflies and the eastern curlews. Some of the flora include patterned ferns, mangroves and various types of grasses.

Ever heard of wilderness travel? Do you know anything at all about it? This subject is important to a lot of people, but very few actually understand it. Many have heard of it but don't know very much about it. There are very few who get excited about it.

Let's take a look at 6 important things you should take into consideration when planning for a wilderness travel trip.

First, Be prepared. Bring enough water, food and warm clothing before starting a wilderness travel. There are many cases that travelers fail to estimate the time they can get back and have to suffer hunger and cold, worse during night fall. Third, learn how to navigate using the sun, wind or your watch. This is to make sure you can still find your way back without maps or compass if these things get lost.

Fourth, learn basic survival skills. These skills are so important that they may even save your life. Learn how to keep yourself warm using leaves and grass. Identify edible plants and fruits can save your life if you lose your food supply.

Fifth, Learn how to make a fire. This skill alone can save your life. Learn and practise how to make a fire with a match in wet condition such as during rain and snow. This is so essential to keep yourself warm and keep you save from wild animals.

Sixth, Notify others before you embark a journey to the wilderness. Inform your loved ones and leave your itinerary at home. Carry a cellphone with you. Make sure it is fully charged. Carry a whistle too. This will come handy if you want to get help from other hikers.

How to Survive a Hiking Trip in the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon averages more rescues than any other national park in the world, and were it not for the swift response of the rescuers the death toll in the Canyon would be exorbitantly high.

As it is, the Canyon's steep drops, soaring summer temperatures, plummeting winter temperatures, lack of water, and sudden weather shifts account for more than 500 deaths since it was first explored by European descendants in the 19th century.

Today the threats are every bit as real, and in some ways are sneakier because people descend into the Canyon feeling like they'll be taken care of. It's a national park after all, isn't it? The bottom line is that to survive in the Canyon you must first decide you're taking your life into your own hands, and from there follow these simple rules and you should be ok.

Number one is know your route. Whether you're hiking, rafting, or doing some combination of both you must know your route. Water is scarce as are feasible hiking routes in or out of the Colorado River.

You don't want to be "somewhere" in the Canyon without a route down to the river and without any idea where another water source is. This exact scenario has claimed more than 50 lives in the Grand Canyon, and in fact claimed yet another one on July 9, 2010.

Along with knowing your route is choosing the right one for you. There are few "moderate" routes in the Canyon, and it's best to stick with them until you have some experience under your belt.

Number two, carry plenty of water. Two gallons per day per person is what's needed to stay full hydrated in the heat of the summer. Also, having plenty of water will prepare you for the possibility of becoming temporarily disoriented, so you can stay hydrated and reorient yourself.

Dehydration is a slippery slope, and once you're down that path it's difficult to reverse it because your thinking becomes clouded, your emotions go haywire, and your body begins to shut down. It's a far better scenario to stay well hydrated at all times.

Number three, don't hike alone. Of the hundreds of hikers who've died in the Canyon the majority of them have been alone. A friend of mine always says "the mind is a scary place to go into alone." Our thoughts can get carried away (or more appropriately, we can get carried away by our thoughts) quickly even in normal circumstances.

When we're lost, alone, and scared our thoughts and emotions can become dangerous. Without someone to bounce ideas off of, to keep us in check, and to provide feedback we can get totally panicked and make deadly choices.

New Brunswick - Unique Experiences and a Taste For the Natural

Getting yourself and your family out of the country is an invigorating way to start a family vacation. Tons of people say that traveling the world is one of their lifelong dreams, and a great way to start it off is by visiting Canada. You and your family will need to acquire passports for international travel.

However, don't let this one step keep you from traveling because it's seriously been made so much easier with a move to the internet. All services, from passport expediting to renewal are only a few clicks away.

Everything, from adding pages to your USA passport to renewing a damaged passport are only a few of the services a reliable passport processing site can take care of. A whole range of expediting options are available to pick from, allowing you to get a passport, no matter how short of a notice you get.

New Brunswick is a Canadian Province that is just past the border of Maine. It's the only officially recognized bilingual Province in Canada, with a majority of the population speaking French and English.

A vibrant culture that revolves around its maritime roots was first started by the French who landed here in 1604. 1,398 miles of coastlines are dotted with more than 48 lighthouses, and the water just off of these shores are populated by the majestic giants of the oceans, whales. These waters are populated by a staggering fifteen species.

New Brunswick has tons of cities where you can get a healthy dose of the city life. Many of these cities feature beautiful walks through scenic areas as well as historic locations, like Bathurst.

Cozy restaurants, bustling markets, and grand architecture make New Brunswick's cities spectacular. Just getting lost in the streets of these cities will give you a unique sort of opportunity to become acquainted with the rich cultural history of New Brunswick.

There are two National Parks in New Brunswick. Kouchibouguac National Park is a stretch of land that goes along the eastern coast of New Brunswick. This park contains tons of trails for hiking, walking, and biking, and gorgeous sand dunes.

The park also features many waterways, which you and your family can explore by kayak or canoe. Fundy National Park is one of the best spots to go camping. At night, the sky becomes of full of stars that, thanks to the absence of lights, you might never have known existed.

New Brunswick is full of natural wonders. On the Bay of Fundy, the highest tides in the world make their huge ascension. Rising up to over four stories high, these tides bring in gems, fossils, and other sea treasures, which remain when it recedes. Getting to stroll along the ocean floor is pretty unique.

What Are Some Backpacking Tent Options to Consider?

When you are backpacking, the goal is to have your gear be as compact and as lightweight as possible. It's important that you don't have anything that is too bulky or heavy else this will weigh you down and make it harder to continue on the trail. When you are backpacking, the tent is very important. Find out what five of your options are for a tent while backpacking.

The first tent to consider is your traditional 3 season backpacking tent. These are normally a bit larger made for two people. If with a partner, one carries this tent while the other carries other gear. There is no need to have a winter tent as this will just add weight and bulk. You don't ever need a 4 season tent while backpacking unless it's cold.

Another option is to go with a one man tent. This is a very common option as it's light and easy to use. These don't provide much space but it does provide you with the covering that you are going to want to have.

You can skip the tent entirely and go with an ultra light weight option going with a bivy. A bivy will cover your sleeping bag and provide shelter above your head. These are very small but at the same time are very light making them a great type of shelter.

Some people just go with a tarp covering. This is a very light weight option that most don't actually do. If you are going to an area with very little rain this is something you can do. Try it out first to know whether you will like this or not.

One option that has become popular in the last few years are the hanging hammock tent. This is a great option since you don't need a pad as you are off the ground. This provides you with the same sleeping conditions night after night. All you need are two trees to have this set up properly.

A Great Vacation - One That is Unique

Have you ever thought that your vacations always seem to be the same old thing? You may travel to the same locations, doing the same activities, and on and on. It may seem challenging to come up with a new vacation idea but it isn't challenging at all to be sure you have a US passport.

With so many online passport agencies available, downloading a US passport application form is quick and easy leaving you to plan your next unique adventure.

If you have always stayed with the United States when taking a vacation, the first thing you need to do is plan an international trip for you and your family. The United States is comfortable and certainly has a lot to offer but, once in a while, traveling abroad might be just the thing to encourage an entirely new type of adventure.

It requires more research and planning when leaving the United States but the effort can be well worth it for you and your entire family.

Global is a word we hear a lot lately and that is because with computers, satellites, and efficient means of travel, the citizens of the entire world are more connected to each other than ever but to visit, you have to have a passport and you may be surprised how easy it is to get an emergency passport so don't delay.

Perhaps you have taken your family to a ranch in the west where they have been able to enjoy horse back riding. While this is a great way to vacation, have you ever thought of offering them the opportunity to ride on a llama?

Yes, that would certainly be unique and if you chose to explore the ruins of Machu Picchu or other mountain destinations in South America, this is an option that would be made available to you. Perhaps a camel ride would be more interesting and unique.

Egypt and Israel can accommodate you with that and India can supply your family with sightseeing from the top of a huge elephant. Now we are talking unique!

One aspect that is always a part of a vacation is your mode of transportation. Have you ever thought of taking a train rather than a plane? Perhaps you would consider cruising across that Atlantic Ocean rather than flying. Once at your destination, hot air balloons and even canoes can provide a different and unique experience.

Now we come to the accommodations. Yes, you can even get creative with accommodations. In Chile, the Magic Mountain Hotel is actually built within a waterfall. In Sweden, the Utter Inn is located on a lake, Lake Malaren. I really mean "on" a lake and the rooms are actually underwater so you can consider yourself staying in an aquarium. How is that for unique?
