Water sport enthusiasts from both New Zealand and around the world return regularly to the central north island region known as Lake Taupo.
A thriving town in the summer months with flocks of holiday makers booking accommodation in Taupo as close to the lake as possible to make the most of the water sport activities on offer. Despite Taupo being a reasonably small town, the lake certainly isn't, covering an area of 60,000 ha.
If you and/or your family are passionate about water sports but not familiar with Taupo read on to find out what lake activities are available.
Trout Fishing
This region is world famous for its trout fishing - with the quantity and size of trout found here unlike any other place in the world. An all year round activity, you can easily find professional fly fishing guides to take you out on a charter.
Many of the establishments offering accommodation in Taupo also include fishing in their package offerings. A fantastic and enjoyable lake activity for both novices and pro's, it will certainly have you returning for more.
Chartered Cruises
You can appreciate this great mass of water even more while taking a chartered cruise around the lake. The panoramic views are simply amazing, with wide stretches of sparkling water bordered by Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro.
There is variety of cruises to select from including sailing across the lake, chugging along on an old steamboat through to launches which speed across the water. Many cruises include meals or a hot drink and afternoon tea depending on the time of day and duration of tour you book.
Kakaying
A truly great way to get up close and personal with the lake is to hire kayaks and have some fun on the water or better yet book a kayaking tour. You can even camp overnight with some tours, learning about the history and cultural significance of the rock carvings seen along the way.
If you enjoy including some physical activity into your holidays you will definitely enjoy the sights experienced on a kayaking tour.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of water sport activities available, others include: diving, jet boating, white water rafting and boat hire.
If these activities sound like your idea of an unforgettable holiday, arrange your accommodation in Taupo now so that you too can book into a motel or hotel nice and close to the lake.
