Do You Want to See Antarctica by Air Or Sea?

Try to imagine a continent which has a size which is twice that of Australia. This place is not only huge it is the highest as well as driest of all the continents on this earth. The distance from the south side of Australia to Antarctica is about 10,000 km and the scenic tour involving flying can cost you anything between $1500 to above $6500, usually depending upon the seating arrangement desired.

Wow, it is a beautiful place! Antarctica is really amazing! You can purchase scenic flights to vast continents which consist of the coldest places on this earth. Temperatures around -90 deg have been recorded in the Antarctica.

While in flight you can listen to various experts who have immense knowledge about the glaciers, terrain, wildlife, and the mountains there.

For all those who are interested in seeing the Antarctica in much closer detail you may take a cruise through the sea. That way you may hopefully see a few forms of wildlife, and maybe even some scientific research bases. What visitors would not be able to see is plant life and any land animals, although tourist may spot whales, migratory birds, and sweet penguins!

Sea going tourists should take adequate precautions against the extreme weather conditions prevalent there. The extremely low temperatures can lead you to hypothermia. Most of us are aware of various methods for protecting ourselves from the hot and sunny weather by using the sunscreens, wearing sunglasses, etc and this same holds true for Antarctica as well.

Skiers can tell you that ice and snow glare has a potential to damage your eyes. You must also never forget sea sickness tablets. There is no fun in losing those golden days lying ill.

So when the time comes to choose the mode of transport to reach Antarctica, I really have no answer. It all depends upon how much you are prepared to pay for the trip. it depends on whether you want to sail on the specially made ships in rough seas, or prefer planes like the Airbus or Qantas 747 that allows you a chance to see more of Antarctica but in lesser detail.

Ships usually sail from many South American ports, though there are many departure locations which are used at other times. These cruises usually take 2 to 3 weeks though some ships may take less time. When you sail, you will surely get more of a chance to see the "bottom of the world."
