What's great about the Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore you ask? Well, here are a few things that make this park a popular vacation destination-
The park has a lovely sandy beach where you can sunbathe and watch the waves crashing on the shore. Agreed, this means doing nothing, but then a lot of people enjoy doing exactly that on their vacations. If you are one of those, you'll be spoiled with choices here. The park after all is full of places where you can relax and watch the butterflies flutter around.
Those who prefer a little more action can go swimming or fishing in the lake. The lake requires you to use your own discretion as lifeguards are offered at West Beach and the state park from 10:00a.m. - 6:00p.m only. For fishing you need a valid Indiana Fishing License and trout-salmon stamp.
You may also take a boating trip through the lake, but you must keep a 500 m distance from the swimming areas. While no launching spots are available in the park, nearby communities offer boat rental and launching facilities.
The park has all kinds of hiking trails from easy and moderate to challenging and strenuous. You can choose the ones that suit you best. Bailly Homestead & Chellberg Farm Trail (moderate), Cowles Bog Trail (moderate), Dunewood Trace (easy), Heron Rookery Trail (easy to moderate), Inland Marsh Trail (moderate), Ly-co-ki-we and Horse Trail (moderate), are some of the most popular trails in the park.
Horseback riding is allowed in the park on Ly-co-ki-we Trail from March 16 through December 14. However, when it snows enough, the trail is used for cross-country skiing in winters.
The lake also serves as a feeding and resting area for migratory birds, thus making it a popular spot for bird watching enthusiasts. Hawks, waterfowl and various species of wetland birds can be easily spotted here.
So, if you enjoy any of these activities or are generally looking for a relaxed and laid back vacation, the Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore would be perfect for you.
